Book Synopsis The imperial Commonwealth by : Wm. Matthew Kennedy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Australian settler colonists mobilised their unique settler experiences to develop their own vision of what ‘empire’ was and could be. Reinterpreting their histories and attempting to divine their futures with a much heavier concentration on racialized visions of humanity, white Australian settlers came to believe that their whiteness as well as their Britishness qualified them for an equal voice in the running of Britain’s imperial project. Through asserting their case, many soon claimed that, as newly minted citizens of a progressive and exemplary Australian Commonwealth, white settlers such as themselves were actually better suited to the modern task of empire. Such a settler political cosmology with empire at its center ultimately led Australians to claim an empire of their own in the Pacific Islands, complete with its own, unique imperial governmentality.
Download or read book To the Islands written by Paul Battersby and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the Islands offers a unique perspective on the evolution of economic, social and political interconnections between Australia and its island region spanning two centuries, from the early years of British colonization to the present day. The book advances the argument that globalizing processes are drawing Australia incrementally closer to modern day South East Asia and the wider Asia Pacific. While globalization is a term commonly associated with the twentieth century world, this study traces the history of Australia's regionalisation back to the nineteenth century; to the lived experiences of Australian travelers, tourists, prospectors, mining entrepreneurs in the Netherlands Indies, Malaya and Siam or Thailand as it is known today. To the Islands challenges the orthodox view that Australia's relations with its regional neighbors were insignificant before the outbreak of war in the Pacific in 1941. By the early 1900s, Java was a popular tourist destination for Australians while Malaya and Siam were emerging as major Australian foreign investment destinations. In placing economic and social interactions ahead of political and security concerns in the analysis of Australia's regional relations, the book highlights the role of non-state actors and people-to-people connections in shaping the contours of Australian diplomatic engagement with South East Asia and the South West Pacific. To the Islands is an essential book for advanced students and researchers of the history and politics of the Asia Pacific and Australia.

Book Synopsis Governing natives by : Ben Silverstein
Download or read book Governing natives written by Ben Silverstein and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, a series of crises transformed relationships between settlers and Aboriginal people in Australia’s Northern Territory. By the late 1930s, Australian settlers were coming to understand the Northern Territory as a colonial formation requiring a new form of government. Responding to crises of social reproduction, public power, and legitimacy, they re-thought the scope of settler colonial government by drawing on both the art of indirect rule and on a representational economy of Indigenous elimination to develop a new political dispensation that sought to incorporate and consume Indigenous production and sovereignties. This book locates Aboriginal history within imperial history, situating the settler colonial politics of Indigeneity in a broader governmental context.
Book Synopsis Repatriation, Exchange, and Colonial Legacies in the Gulf of Papua by : Lara Lamb
Download or read book Repatriation, Exchange, and Colonial Legacies in the Gulf of Papua written by Lara Lamb and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the people of the Kikori River Delta, in the Gulf of Papua, as established historical agents of intercultural exchange. One hundred years after they were made, Frank Hurley’s colonial-era photographic reproductions are returned to the descendants of the Kerewo and Urama peoples, whom he photographed. The book illuminates how the movement, use, and exchange of objects can produce distinctive and unrecognised forms of value. To understand this exchange, a nuanced history of the conditions of the exchange is necessary, which also allows a reconsideration of the colonial legacies that continue to affect the social and political worlds of people in the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme here, in essence, is that the major inconsistency explaining the general unification and modern transformation of Malayan Islam is British colonialism itself. While scholars working on Malaysian social change have hinted at this possibility, the author demonstrates it convincingly and in the process contributes significantly to our knowledge of Malaysian institutional development and to a method of exploring such change by way of legal material.
