Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing and manufacturing structures of all kinds in an economic and a safe way is not possible without doing experimental stress analysis. The modernity of structures, with their higher reliability demands, as well as today's more stringent safety rules and extreme environmental conditions necessitate the improvement of the measuring technique and the introduction of new ones. Although theoretical/mathematical analysis is improving enormously, an example of which is the finite element model, it cannot replace experimental analysis and vice versa. Moreover, the mathematical analysis needs more and more accurate parameter data which in turn need improved experimental investigations. No one can do all those investigations on his own. Exchange of knowledge and experience in experimental stress analysis is a necessity, a thing acknowledged by every research worker. Therefore, the objective of the Permanent Committee for Stress Analysis (PC SA) is to promote the organization of conferences with the purpose disseminating new research and new measuring techniques as well as improvements in existing techniques, and furthermore, to promote the exchange of experiences of practical applications with techniques. rhis Vlllth International Conference on Experimental Stress Analysis on behalf of the PC SA is one in a series which started in 1959 at Delft (NL), and was followed by conferences at Paris (F), Berlin-W, Cambridge (~K), Udine (I), Munich (FRG) and Haifa (Isr.). Such a Conference will be held in Europe every fourth year, half-way bewteen the IUTAM Congresses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time to time the International Journal of Fracture has presented matters thought to be of special interest to its readers. In previous special issues (December 1980 and April 1981), Dr H.W. Liu as Guest Editor presented a series of review papers dealing with fatigue processes and characteristics in metals and non-metals. Continuing this policy, which is consistent with our stated objectives, a second review dealing with time depen dence in the fracture process, including the effect of material inertia but essentially excluding very strong shock effects in solids, has been assembled under the generic term "dynamic fracture". We hope that the ensuing state-of-the-art review will yield an instructive and timely product which readers will find useful. To assist us in presenting this subject, we have prevailed upon a well-known worker in dynamic fracture, Dr W.G. Knauss, Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics, California Institute of Technology to act as Guest Editor for this special double issue. On behalf of the editors and publisher, I wish to express our indebtedness to Professor Knauss and his invited authors for undertaking this special effort.

Book excerpt: This excellent text highlights all aspects of the analysis and design of elements related to spatial structures, which have been carefully selected from existing structures. Analysing the design of elements of any full scale structure that contains facilities that have already been constructed makes good economic sense and avoids duplication in respect of research and development, the decision-making process and accurate design criteria for new constructed facilities.

Book excerpt: This is an open access book.As society progresses and the city scale increases, architecture is diversifying and becoming complex, with structures transforming from simple structures into high-rise, long-span and even special and complex structures. Architecture is where people live and work, so its security must be ensured. However, the architectural structure is likely to be destroyed by natural disasters (earthquakes, wind, snow, rain), man-made faults and incidents (explosion, fire, crashes) and accidental events like attacks and man-made sabotage in recent years. Therefore, countries have endeavored to improve architectural security for many years. A large number of anti-seismic issues in the civil engineering construction have turned up, which also gave birth to many new anti-seismic theories, technologies and products. 2023 5th International Conference on Structural Seismic and Civil Engineering Research (ICSSCER 2023) will be held on August 25–27, 2023 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. With a display of the latest research outcomes in theoretical research, experimental study and engineering application, this conference creates a platform for scholars, researchers and technical personnel to exchange ideas and further understand each other. We extend a warm welcome to you and expect you to attend this academic feast to promote academic exchanges of relevant issues and advance the development of structural anti-seismic and civil engineering research and application. 2023 8th International Conference on Ecological Building and Green Building Material (EBGBM 2023,http://www.ebgbm.net/) will be conducted as a sub session of ICSSCER 2023. Scholars from home and abroad are welcomed to contribute papers and attend the conference.
