Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Silk Manufacturing Industry of the United States, 1884 In the year 1522, Cortes, as ruler of New Spain (mexico) prepared a plan for its government; the details included the appointment of officials in charge of the silk industry. The first step was the planting of mulberry trees, and we learn that these were flourishing near the city of Mexico a few years afterward. The record of certain legal proceedings has secured to history the date of the introduction of the silkworm into Ainerica. After Cortes withdrew from personal rule in New Spain, the authorities who were placed in charge by the king made an investigation of what had been done by the board of auditors who preceded them. This was in the year 1531. Among the items of this procedure is a statement (e) that a quarter of an ounce of silkworm seed (eggs) was sent on public account from Spain to Francisco de Santa Cruz, a citizen of Mexico. The seed arrived in safety, and was placed by Francisco with Auditor Diego Delgadillo, who was a native of Granada, and presumably knew something of silk culture in his own country, where it was introduced by the Moors. Delgadillo made use of the eggs in a garden about a league from the capital, where mulberry trees were in good condition for the support of the worms. The experiment was eminently successful. The auditor returned two ounces of eggs to Francisco, and retained enough to supply various amounts to other people. The point of the accusation against Delgadillo was that he sold this seed at 860 per ounce; thus disposing of the property of the crown for his own benefit. He was convicted of the crime, though credited with the introduction of silk into the country. This was the beginning of an industry in the culture of silk, its manufacture into woven goods, and their export abroad, which has not generally attracted the notice of modern writers on the subject. Acosta gives the following account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report to the Department of State on Silk and Silk Manufacturers, 1868 Sir: - The undersigned, Commissioner of the United States, and Member of the "Committee on raw materials and manufactures of great use, or displaying remarkable skill or merit," to whom has been specially assigned the subject of silk and silk manufactures, respectfully submits the following Report. Silk, by its characteristic qualities and unchangeableness, as well as by the richness and beauty of its appearance, is, in relation to textile substances, what gold is to metals. It is, of all filamentary substances, that which gives the finest, most durable, and most elastic threads. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hours of Work as Related to Output and Health of Workers: Silk Manufacturing, Research Report Number 16; March, 1919 The Board's investigation of the hours-of-work problem in the silk manufacturing industry was conducted along the same general lines as the earlier investigations in the cotton1 and wool' manufacturing industries. The results of the silk investigation, however, present a striking con trast with those for the two other textile industries studied. In the northern cotton industry, reductions to less than 56 hours per week involved a general loss in ouput in more than 90% of the establishments3 and in a majority of cases this loss was approximately proportional to the reduction in time. Again, in the wool industry, a reduction to a 54 - hour schedule resulted in a general loss in output, though the loss was somewhat less pronounced than in the cotton industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Silk: Its Origin, Culture, and Manufacture A growing demand from teachers and others for a reliable and concise book Of information on silk cul ture, has prompted the preparation of this little pamphlet. It is distinctly an educational work, embracing as it does the most interesting facts gathered from the experience Of years Of scientific and practical study devoted to the rearing Of this wonderful insect. We may be pardoned in thinking that perhaps none better than the Corticelli Silk Mills could undertake the publication Of such a work, since for over sixty three years the products Of these famous mills have been the recognized standard Of the silk thread world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silk Industry of the United States: From 1766 to 1874 The three thousand pounds of raw silk which were then annu ally produced in Mansfield could only be disposed of when con verted by hand-manufacture into sewing-silk, and for the most part had to be offered in barter. Mr. Lilly hoped that by means of machinery a sewing-silk could be made equal to the Italian, and, like it, capable of being sold for cash, instead of being ex changed for goods at irregular valuations. He was fully acquaint ed with the praiseworthy efforts which his townsmen, Messrs. Hanks, had already made in endeavoring to spin silk by ma chinery; he was further apprised of their utter failure, both in demonstrating that the manufacture of sewing-silk by machinery was practicable, and in awakening a public interest that might have carried forward the undertaking. Not discouraged by these facts, he brought the subject before Captain Joseph Conant and Messrs. William A. Fisk, William Atwood, Storrs Hovey, and Jesse Bingham, and with them eventually formed a copartnership, under the name of the Mansfield Silk Company, for the manufacture of silk by machinery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics of the Silk Industry: A Study in Industrial Organisation The investigation on which this book is based was commenced in 1916. It is the result of personal observation and inquiry extending over a period of nearly three years, both in this country and in France. In Great Britain I devoted exclusive attention to the study of the manufacturing industry, and collected useful material from all sources, including merchants, brokers, manufacturers, and others interested in the silk industry and trade. During my tour in France I took the opportunity of making a joint economic survey of the silk producing and the silk-manufacturing industries. This joint study greatly facilitated my work, and I was thus able to discover the connecting links between the processes of production and the processes of manufacturing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silk Industry in America: A History Prepared for the Centennial Exposition Tan little treatise herewith offered to the public can make but slight pretension to original thought, or literary merit; though its preparation has required extensive and somewhat protracted research in fields seldom explored by literary men, and not often by those specially interested in the silk industry. The writer desires to acknowledge his deep obligations to Franklin Allen, Esq., the Secretary of the Silk Association of America, not only for placing at his disposal the Association's large collection of works on silk and silk culture, which comprises most of the literature of the sub jcet, but in a still higher measure for his free permission to use and tran scribe the greater part of his Chronological Record of the Silk Industry in America, prepared with great labor for the forthcoming volume of the U. 8. Industrial Directory; and for tables of statistics, which add greatly to the permanent value of this volume. Without such coopera tion, the production of this work would have been impossible. Grateful acknowledgments are also due to A. T. Lilly, Esq., the author of a history of the silk industry in Connecticut; john Ryle, Esq., of Paterson N. J., and other manufacturers, who have also communicated important facts for the work. For whatever of good or use there is in this little volume, the credit is largely due to these kind friends; for its errors and shortcomings, if such there be, the writer must alone bear the responsibility; but the burden will be lighter, if his readers will do him the justice to believe, that he has sought, to the best of his ability, to honor American Industry, and to set forth the achievements of American enterprise and perseverance. This work is published under the auspices of the Silk Association of America. The privilege of its sale at the International Exhibition at Philadelphia, has been accorded by A. T. Goshorn, Esq., director-gen eral of the U. S. Centennial Commission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Mulberry Tree and Silkworm: And on the Production and Manufacture of Silk Not to know what occurred before one was born, is to be, said an ancient writer, always a child. Knowledge, indeed, is that to which, as a means, we owe our all. And whatever we shall, or shall not, be or possess hereafter, will be measured by knowledge, or the want of it; or by our diligent use or neglect of it. Knowledge, in short, should be hailed, invited, as our best friend; whilst its reverse, ignorance, our worst, if not our only enemy, should be scouted, were it possible, from the very face of an earth tenanted by man, by all that aspire to the dignity of the intel lectual character. On knowledge, or on the want of it, how often has depended whether whole nations shall be civilized or uncivilized, as well as learned or unlearned; whether whole kingdoms shall slumber for centuries in comparative barbarism, as well as whether the myriads of individuals composing them shall spend their existence in prosperity and peace, or be immured in wretchedness, to bequeath it, as an entail, to their posterity after them. A Providence, kind and paternal, however, deserts not man, unless he neglect himself. The inventive faculty is given to him. Necessity, it is commonly said, is the mother of invention but with all deference to her maternal powers, it may be added, that they would be unproductive, were it not for the astonishing and yet undeveloped powers of mind. The history of mind, could it be well composed - and of its inventions and discoveries, for five thousand years, in the arts, in science, in manu factures, in implements, in machinery, and in productions of every kind, sweeping in its universe of evolutions, the two empires of material and immaterial being - would present at once the most interesting and im portant detail of the great and mystic movements of what the same Pro vidence has placed here, on this earth, to be the sovereign of ma/ter. We repeat it, Mind is the sovereign of matter Matter, it is true, in all forms, is created from age to age, ready to our hands, by the same Paternal energy; but it is left to the empire of instinct and reason, or of mind, through all its divisions of power, to move, change, transform, metamorphose it into other forms, substances, shapes, and modifications, so dissimilar, that the crude ore of the mountain becomes the spangling specie of the bank; the eece of an animal, the clothing of man; the cotton of a vegetable, the calico, the muslin of the store and the leaf of the mulberry tree, the velvet cushion of the throne, or the robes that embellish the persons of emperors and of queens.
