Book Synopsis The Economics of Land Degradation by : Ephraim Nkonya
Download or read book The Economics of Land Degradation written by Ephraim Nkonya and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land degradation is increasingly considered as a global problem. The extent of degraded and degrading areas adversely impacts on large numbers of people and leads to significant social and economic costs, thus raising the questions: In which way is it worth taking action against land degradation? Where and when should action take place, and what are costs related to certain actions? For policy makers it is important to know the social and economic costs linked to the current and future status of land degradation. A conceptual framework that allows comparing the costs of action against land degradation versus the costs of inaction is provided in this book. The applicability of the framework is illustrated with case studies and prepares the ground for a global assessment on the costs of land degradation.

Book Synopsis The Role of National Development Banks in Catalyzing International Climate Finance by : Lucila Serra
Download or read book The Role of National Development Banks in Catalyzing International Climate Finance written by Lucila Serra and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant investments are needed to support the global transition to a low-carbon, climate resilient future. Current finance flows fall short of global financing needs, and massive scaling up is needed to unlock additional financial resources and foster a sustainable investment pathway. Overcoming barriers to private sector investments is critical, and international climate finance can play a catalytic role in this regard. National development banks (NDBs) have a unique role in this context, both complementing and catalyzing private sector players. This publication discusses the unique role that NDBs could play in scaling up private financing for climate change mitigation projects through the intermediation of international and national public climate finance in their respective local credit markets and the conditions that would be needed for them to be most effective. It draws from experiences in international climate finance and best practices, processes, and products of NDBs within the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The global economic recession and financial turmoil from COVID-19 (coronavirus) are derailing implementation of the Agenda and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Even before the pandemic, the 2020 Financing for Sustainable Development Report (FSDR) of the Inter-agency Task Force noted that there was backsliding in many areas. Due to the crisis, global financial markets have witnessed heavy losses and intense volatility. Particularly worrisome is the prospect of a new debt crisis. Download or read book Policy Innovations for Transformative Change written by Katja Hujo and published by UN. This book was released on 2016 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals are a global commitment to "transforming our world" and eradicating poverty in all its forms everywhere. The challenge now is to put this vision into action. Policy Innovations for Transformative Change, the UNRISD 2016 Flagship Report, helps unpack the complexities of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in a unique way: by focusing on the innovations and pathways to policy change, and analysing which policies and practices will lead to social, economic and ecological justice. Drawing on numerous policy innovations from the South, the report goes beyond buzzwords and brings to the development community a definition of transformation which can be used as a benchmark for policy making toward the 2030 Agenda, intended to "leave no one behind". Bringing together five years of UNRISD research across six areas--social policy, care policy, social and solidarity economy, eco-social policy, domestic resource mobilization, and politics and governance--the report explores what transformative change really means for societies and individuals.

Book Synopsis Realizing Womens Rights to Land and other Productive Resources by : United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
Download or read book Realizing Womens Rights to Land and other Productive Resources written by United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides detailed guidance for lawmakers and policymakers, as well as civil society organizations and other stakeholders, to support the adoption and effective implementation of laws, policies and programmes to respect, protect and fulfil womens rights to land and other productive resources. It is based on the results of an expert group meeting held in June 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland, where critical issues facing women today in relation to the enjoyment of their land rights were raised. Land itself can be understood to include farmland, wetland, pasture, rangeland, fishery, forest, as well as harvesting and hunting territories. Throughout this publication the phrase womens rights to land must be understood holistically and in a manner which is grounded in the international human rights framework, and in the context of intersecting forms of discrimination. While this publication focuses on womens rights to land, it is also recognized that land is inextricably linked to womens access to, use of and control over other productive resources, such as property, fisheries, livestock and game. Therefore, the publication also uses the phrase womens rights to land and other productive resources to reflect this broader context.
