Book Synopsis The Major Projects Report 2009 by : Great Britain. National Audit Office
Download or read book The Major Projects Report 2009 written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current defence programme is unaffordable. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has already reduced the deficit between the defence budget and planned expenditure by £15 billion, but a shortfall of between £6 billion and £36 billion remains. The financial crisis means a substantial increase in funding is unlikely, and closing the gap will require bold action as part of the Strategic Defence Review which is expected after the General Election. The MOD has reduced equipment numbers being bought on some projects and taken short-term decisions to slip other projects, but this approach will lead to long-term cost increases. In 2008-09, costs on the 15 major defence projects examined by the NAO increased by £1.2 billion, with two thirds (£733 million) directly due to the decision to slow projects. This approach does not address the fundamental affordability problems, increases through-life costs and represents poor value for money on the specific projects affected. There are signs of improvement in project cost control with innovative decisions being taken to ensure progress but unless the MOD addresses the underlying budgetary and governance issues it will not consistently deliver value for money nor will the operational benefits of expensive new capabilities be available to the Armed Forces in a timely manner or in the numbers originally planned. The current cost of 15 major military projects has risen by £3.6 billion, compared with the expected costs when the investment decisions were taken. The total slippage, averaged over the 14 major projects with in service dates, is over two years per project.
Book Synopsis The Power of Project Leadership by : Susanne Madsen
Download or read book The Power of Project Leadership written by Susanne Madsen and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's 'more for less' culture, the expectations of project management and delivery are no longer limited to budgets, schedules and quality. For projects to make an impact and have lasting value, the project manager must be able to strategize, innovate, motivate, empower and collaborate - in other words, project managers must learn how to lead. The Power of Project Leadership helps you transform into an effective project leader by shifting your managerial mindset into one of inspiration, motivation and influence. The book describes what good project leadership looks like and explains how to make the transition using concrete tools and strategies. With underlying theories to help the reader understand how teams and individuals are motivated, it ensures that project managers lead with vision, continuously improve and innovate, work with intent, empower the team, get closer to stakeholders, remain authentic and establish a solid foundation for their projects. The book has a practical and engaging approach and draws on over 25 interviews with leading experts who have made the transition from project managers to project leaders. These experts come from a variety of sectors and companies; including Expedia, British Gas, Standard Bank, Verizon Enterprise Solutions, Liquid Planner, and the UK Government.

Download or read book Review Procedures for Water Resources Project Planning written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-01-16 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, through its civil works program, can take pride in its contributions throughout our nation's history to the development of waterways infrastructure, navigation, flood damage reduction, water resources development and protection, and environmental restoration. Many projects that have been pioneering in their concept and bold in their execution were made possible by the creativity and dedication of outstanding scientists, engineers, and builders. The Corps has always had review processes for evaluation of its planning studies and projects, with the focus often being largely on the technical aspects. In recent years, however, increased consideration of such factors as environmental impacts, economic evaluations, political pressures, and new paradigms about flood control and management has engendered increased criticism and concern that some of the Corps' studies may have led to conclusions, recommendations, and project decisions that are not adequately supported by the assumptions and analyses that were used. The focus of the report is on review of Corps of Engineers studies, with careful attention given to the need for independent, external reviews by panels of well-qualified and impartial experts for large, complex, and sensitive projects.
