Book Synopsis Building Legitimacy by : M. Sajjad Hassan
Download or read book Building Legitimacy written by M. Sajjad Hassan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compares two states in the Northeast with different socio-political trajectories—a relatively orderly Mizoram and a troubled Manipur—in order to understand the sources of political turmoil in the region. Taking the region as a case study, it examines the larger debates on success and failure in state-making. In discussing the divergent success of the two states in mitigating conflicts, Hassan demonstrates how in Mizoram the process of state-making helped consolidate public legitimacy and the authority of state leaders. He also shows how it strengthened the institutional capability of government agencies to provide services, manage group contestations, and avoid breakdown. At the same time, he illustrates how in Manipur, traditional centres of power—tribal and ethnic associations—gained in authority, compromising the legitimacy of the government and institutional capability of its agencies. The study highlights the important role, in the context of state breakdown, of the absence of an effective medium to regulate inter-group relationships and manage contestations over power, resources, opportunities, and identity. Rigorously comparative, it explains the sources of disorder in Northeast India by focusing on the nature of state–society relations in the region. While acknowledging the important role of history in structuring this failure of the state system in the region, it suggests ways in which the path dependence can be overcome.

This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of women belonging to Scheduled Castes are perhaps best revealed by studying the social, economic, educational, health and political conditions of these women. They are the have not's of Indian society. They deserve all attention and support from State, Community and Society. Earlier they were neglected by upper castes and their own fellows. For a long period, the social justice was based on class, religion, creed and caste. The high rate of infant mortality, child mortality and maternal deaths among Scheduled Caste Women was serious problem. Scheduled Caste Women are discriminated due to a patriarchic dominated social structure on the one hand and humiliation within them due to caste ridden social system on the other. Therefore, a proper and transparent justice was never possible.

Download or read book Infrastructure of Injustice written by Raile Rocky Ziipao and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the dynamics of infrastructure development in Northeast India, especially Manipur, from a socio-anthropological perspective. It looks at the pattern and distribution of infrastructure in the region to analyse the impact of education, roads and health care on the livelihoods, ecosystems, governance and social futures of communities. The volume examines the infrastructure deficit in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur, focusing especially on electricity and roads. The author shows how problems arising from poor infrastructure are further complicated on account of corruption, insurgency, ethnic unrest and the politics of marginalisation. Looking at the discourse around development in the northeast, the volume also highlights the structural inequality in Manipur and other states. It further shows how infrastructure development can become a means for enabling trade, creating markets, diluting boundaries between varied ethnic groups and connecting people. This book will be useful for researchers and scholars of development studies, economics, social anthropology, sociology and public policy – particularly those interested in India’s northeast.
