Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Report on the Building Stones of Nevada, Including a Brief Chapter on Road Metal, Vol. 1 The statement that the West is undeveloped is undeniably true. It is doubly true of the State of Nevada. Little has been done to develop her natural resources; little is known of the boundless wealth of her mountains and valleys. Yet Nevada is; on the eve of a great awakening; with the advent of irrigation thousands of acres of fertile land, now desert like, will be made to, yield an abundance of the fruits of the field, and will support a large population. As the community increases in numbers, a demand will arise for all modern improvements, among which two of the most important are, permanent buildings and good roads. It is needless to state that both of these are made possible by the use of stone; stone for erecting substantial, handsome structures, and stone for the betterment of the highways, which are so important to the healthy life of a growing community. It is not needless, however, to state that the principle underlying the choice and use of stone for the above purposes are little understood. Moreover, were these principles understood, little is known of the various rocks in the state available at present. The purpose of this preliminary report, then, is as follows: First, to present the main principles governing the selection and use of building stones and road metal; second, to describe briefly the stones now in use, or that can easily be used, in Nevada, with their location and availability; and third, to attempt to arouse a larger interest in a subject of such vast importance to a healthy commonwealth, We in the West are prone to build for the day only; tomorrow is allowed to care for itself. This is undoubtedly cheaper at any particular time, but is far dearer in the end. The scale of any civilization may be told from its architecture; the stability of that civilization is shown by the materials used in the architecture, lint we are learning to build, not for mere decades, but for centuries of use, and to do this we must use stone. The first cost may be high, but the ultimate expense is low. The result of this is to be seen now in many places. Not only are stone buildings more common, but also the use of stone is seen in bridges, culverts, roads, curbing, and in many other ways too numerous to mention. In a rapidly growing state like Nevada the importance of these considerations cannot easily be overestimated, yet that importance is little realized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Compressive Strength, Specific Gravity, and Ratio of Absorption of the Building Stones in the United States Each specimen of all the kinds was carefully prepared by an expert stone-cutter, and the bed-side marked. These were then placed upon a table near the hydrostatic-press, used in such a manner as to mix them completely, and so prevent any inadvertent choice being made when they were picked up. They were there examined, squared, measured, and calipered, and then tested on bed or edge, under steel, wood, lead, or leather, as the routine prescribed. When placed in the press each specimen was carefully centered to the axial line of pressure, and the power applied neither fast nor slow, but steadily. The records were not attempted to be made exact within 500 pounds - equal to 125 pounds per square inch on 2-inch beds and over. On smaller Specimens than 1-inch cubes 100 pounds was made the limit of error. The weight of the movable parts of the press, with its attendant fric tion and the pump-stroke - abou't 800 pounds in all - is to be subtracted from the records in the general tables, or 200 pounds per square inch. The subject Of friction is discussed under the head of Testing the press and gauges. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Report on the Building Stones of Nevada, Including a Brief Chapter on Road Metal The nature of this subject is more complex than appears on casual inspection. Fundamental principles of three separate sciences all play an essential part; the subject is built upon geol ogy, physics and chemistry. The practical man may believe that he has no time for such considerations, yet the simplest rule of thumb method, if it be right, is founded upon true scientific prin ciples. No man in this advancing age of competition can afford to be ignorant of those things which vitally concern him and his business. Every citizen, directly or indirectly, is concerned with the erection of public buildings, private buildings, and county and city highways. Hampered by lack of facilities for detailed work, a full report on the subject is impossible for some time, yet the time is ripe for a little knowledge to be distributed about these matters. The chief uses of rock are as follows, in order of their rel ative importance. First, the largest amount of stone is used in the construction of buildings, under conditions already mentioned. Second, much of the finest grade of stone is used for monument al and ornamental work. It is not right; nor is it necessary, that nearly.all atom rocks for such uses come from outside localities. T hird, the importance of crushed rock for the construction of roads is well known. Fourth, in the larger towns and cities, stone curbing is imperative on the graded streets. Fifth, the use of cut stone for bridges and culverts, especially by the railroads, is grow ing constantly. Sixth, much cut rock is used for sidewalks and by the railroads. Sixth, much cut rock is used for sidewalks and tiling in the most approved buildings. Besides these. There are many lesser uses, such as the construction of piers, break-waters, dams, retaining walls with such small uses as hitching posts, steps, mounting blocks, and the like. And it is worth noting that this list is constantly increasing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Building Stones IN the following pages an attempt has been made to gather together some of the facts about the Geology of Building Stones, mainly with a view to the requirements of students of architecture. Special attention has been given throughout to the materials found in the British Isles; but it has been thought desirable to add brief references to some of the stones of other countries. Naturally, in dealing with a subject covering so wide a field, selection and much condensation have been inevitable. Limitations of space have prevented the con sideration of Ornamental Stones, and the introduction of references to the very numerous sources of information. The writer's thanks are due to Professor T. Hudson Beare and Mr. W. R. Baldwin-wiseman for permission to quote certain tables from their exceedingly valuable papers, and to the Councils of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Surveyors' Institution for kindly giving their consent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British and Foreign Building Stones Specimens of Building Stones brought together to form a collection are usually arranged according to their lithological character irrespective of their age. Possibly this method may have been found to be the most convenient for architects and builders, other wise it would not have been so generally adopted. Bearing in mind however that the present collection is primarily for the use of students of geology at Cambridge University, it has been thought that the specimens will be more helpful to them, if they are arranged in stratigraphical order, hence this method has been adopted, except in the case of the igneous rocks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Stones and Clays: Their Origin, Characters and Examination The present volume may in some sense be considered as an outgrowth of the author's previous work on cementing materials, for it deals with natural materials which are closely related, either as constituents or as competitors, to the manufactured products therein discussed. It may be noted that little space has been devoted to a de scription of the local distribution of building stones and clays. The inclusion of such data, relative to products which are nat urally so common and so widely distributed, tends to convert a general treatise into a mere directory of the quarry and clay product industries. The extensive reference lists which are pre sented, however, will serve to point out where information re garding the stone or clays of any particular state may be found. Attention should also be directed to the chapters relative to the examination and valuation of clay and stone properties. So far as known to the writer, most of the material therein pre sented has not been touched upon in earlier works on these subjects. Many different stones are used for structural work, and, owing to the abundance of these in nearly all parts of the United States, as well as the growing demand for this class of building material, the industry has assumed proportions of considerable size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada, Vol. 2: Maritime Provinces The field work in connexion with the present report dealing with the building and ornamental stones of the Maritime Provinces was carried on during the summer of 1911, and occupied a period of two and one-half months. In all, about sixty quarries were visited, as well as a considerable number of abandoned quarries and prospects. Owing to the difficulty of access, and the unsatisfactory outcrop of stone on undeveloped or long abandoned properties, it was found that little additional information was to be gained by an actual visit. In a country where the occurrences of stone, more or less suitable to purposes of construction, are practically innumerable, it was found necessary to use considerable discretion in the selection of localities worthy of close examination. While the present report is by no means confined to quarries in actual operation, it makes no pretense of including 'every opening that has been made for the production of building stone. It is thought, however, that every important district is represented by a typical example, and that every stone, commercially available at the present time, has received due consideration. The writer desires to acknowledge the kindness of all the quarry owners and operators throughout the district, whose willingness to impart information has greatly facilitated the preparation of this report. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada, Vol. 3 AS in the case of the two previous volumes of this report, I was instruct ed to confine my attention as much as possible to the economic and technical aspects of the subject, and to introduce geological references only when they would be of assistance to a proper understanding of the problem presented. In accordance with these instructions I have avoided all geological detail, and in the case of the igneous rocks I have not introduced the petrographic descriptions which a geologist might expect, but footnotes have been inserted containing references to literature with which the professional geologist is familiar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada, 1917, Vol. 5: Province of British Columbia All quarries which have produced structural stone in commercial quan tity were visited, and in addition, a number of others which have been worked for crushed stone, lime-making, etc. It was thought advisable to include quarries of this type in order to ascertain if they offer any encourage ment from the present point of view. The information thus gained is chie y of a negative character, but it has been included in the report, as practically any sort of stone is of possible value as building material. Quarries of building stone in the narrower sense are those which are oper ated solely or primarily for the production of structural stone; it is thought that all such quarries are included in the report. While most of the quarries operated for other purposes were visited, the report does not pretend to be complete in this respect. In addition to actual quarries, a large number of outcrops were examined, to which attention was drawn by the existing literature on 'the subject, or by information obtained from private sources. It is manifest that considerable discretion had to be used in selecting the localities of this type to be visited, as some of the reported occurrences are too remote or inaccessible to make a visit possible in the time available for the investigation. In accordance with the plan followed in the earlier volumes of this report, a geological basis of classification has been adopted, although it is freely admitted that this method is less satisfactory in the case of British Columbia. The reason for this lies in the great number of formations, and in the lack of definite correlation of the formations of different districts. A strict adherence to the geological method of classification, or an attempt to present the subject to the satisfaction of the purely scientific reader, would obscure the economic essentials under a mass of detail quite foreign to the purpose of this report. In the chapter dealing with the geology of the province, certain geological tables are used: these are intentionally incomplete, and are not intended for the use of scientists, but merely to give the average reader a rough idea of the position in the time-scale of certain strata capable of yielding building stone.
