In this report I have described many curious and interesting remains of Hindu architecture and sculpture of all ages. Of the old Buddhis tic times, there are the ancient mounds of Panch Pahari, or the Five hills, close to Patna, from whence Akbar viewed the city when he was besieging Daud Shah, the last king of Bengal. Of the same age are the old temples and stupas of Sravasti and Tandwa. Of the indo-scythian period, there is a very curious group of sculpture from Tusaran Bihar, near Allahabad. Of the Gupta age, there are the two inscribed stone pillars at Bilsar, in the Doab, recording the name of Kumara Gupta, with the early date of Sambat 96 of the Gupta era. Of a later period, there are some very curious and interesting illustrations in the brick temples of Bhitar gaon, Paraoli, and Rar, near Cawnpore, with their vaulted roofs and terra-cotta bas-reliefs. With the help of this material a bibliography could be compiled by a small team of highly skilled archaeologists who could devote part of their time and attention to such a task for the benefit of their colleagues in all parts of the world. Times since then have changed, and circumstances have become less and less favourable. To find classified labour for the compilation and editing of such a bibliography has become extremely difficult, and this the more so as this work cannot be paid in accordance with the standards for this branch of classified documentation. The work has to be done as a part of the daily routine work even a scholar in today's time is expected to perform, and which he cannot but consider as being detrimental to the performing of those parts of his work, that demand the use of those qualifications that actually make him the expert.

In cities in India, the Balkans and the Mediterranean, we can see examples where religion plays a dominant role in urban development and thus provides a platform for conflict. Powerful religious hierarchies, the generation of often unregulated revenues from donations and endowments, the presence of holy sites and the enactment of ritualistic activities in public spaces combine to create forms of conflicts which are, arguably, more intense and more intractable than other forms of conflicts in cities. The book develops a working definition of the urban dimension of religious conflicts so that the kinds of conflicts exhibited can be contextualised and studied in a more targeted manner.
