This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic libraries have traditionally had two key functions, to support teaching and to support research. In an evolving and competitive university environment, along with the emergence of various technologies and substantial changes in scientific communication, university management has reached a turning point. Academic libraries are facing a paradigm shift in the role they need to play to achieve the research objectives of universities. Research support services in academic libraries have evolved as a response to these changes. They are heterogeneous, adapt to their university culture, adopt different points of view, take different approaches in their organizational structures, and include a diverse catalog of activities. Having an overview of different experiences will allow libraries to adopt best practices, redefine services, and even establish new management and collaboration models. Cases on Research Support Services in Academic Libraries is a critical scholarly resource that uses case studies to systematize the experiences of research support services in academic libraries for the support of higher education faculty. The cases focus on such items as the role of technology and its impact as well as how these services help to improve the excellence of universities. Featuring a wide range of topics such as library services, data management, and open science, this book is ideal for librarians, academicians, professionals, researchers, and students.

Book Synopsis Academic Libraries on the Periphery by : Kenneth E. Flower
Download or read book Academic Libraries on the Periphery written by Kenneth E. Flower and published by Association of Research Libraries. This book was released on 1986 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines developments at 26 universities to identify patterns and models of telecommunications information planning and decision-making. The study was designed to determine how telecommunications information (TI) policy questions are resolved on university campuses, and by whom. An important aspect of the study was to determine the role of the library and university computing facilities in the formation of TI policy. To gather data for analysis, researchers surveyed 36 universities with local area networks (LANs), whether operational or planned, as listed in the 1985 Automation Inventory of Research Libraries; 26 responded. Seeking to identify the centers of decision-making and to determine spheres of authority, the survey covered wiring, telephone systems, TI policy in general, and the relationship of the library to computing facilities. Data analysis led to the creation of four models of TI policy formation: (1) Academic Affairs Sphere Model; (2) Administrative Services Sphere Model; (3) Computing/Information Systems Sphere Model; and (4) Decentralized Model, which includes a committee-based model. Appendices include detailed survey results on the status of campus wiring and on wiring decisions, university organization charts, and a copy of the survey form. (THC)

Book Synopsis Strategic Planning in Higher Education by : James F Williams Ii
Download or read book Strategic Planning in Higher Education written by James F Williams Ii and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this refreshing new volume, strategic planning of budget management is looked at with a broad, positive perspective. Whether because of cuts in funding, enrollment decline, or academic cutbacks, the necessity for strategic planning in a university comes out of unfavorable circumstances. The chapters cover the planning process from start to finish, with an emphasis on a final goal of bringing the library’s status from one of an economic competitor to a deserving equal in the eyes of the academic community. The development of programs and long--term goals for various programs with realistic results in mind are stressed in this timely book. Strategic planning can be an effective managing tool in the midst of uncertainty and constant change. Cooperation, collaboration, and communication are all essentials for reaching this goal, and the authors of the 13 chapters describe in detail past instances in which these were successful. Readers will find that several major themes tie the diverse chapters of this book together, such as becoming successful in applying for limited institutional resources; giving the library’s goals a more prominent position among the members of the campus administration; and using the planning exercise to help the members of the academic community better understand the administrative decision-making process. Written by college and university presidents, campus planners, and librarians, this book clearly outlines the methods and benefits of strategic planning and provides an encouraging picture of what can be achieved when the process is used.
