Excerpt: ...is at present about 1000 pounds per acre this yield (1428 pounds) is lower than the lowest yield in the trials plats. Altho wild hay has-long been assumed by many stockmen to be superior to tame hay, such assumption seems without much foundation. An ever present objection to wild hay is its lack of uniformity. The presence of injurious or even dangerously poisonous weeds in wild hay contributes toward reducing its feed value especially during seasons of hay shortage. HAY AND PASTURE MIXTURES The practice of seeding two or more different forage crops together has the advantage of giving variety to the quality of the hay or pasture as well as insuring a good stand of at least one crop under widely different soil conditions in the same field. It will be noted in Table XIII that a mixture of timothy and alfalfa yielded better than timothy alone and likewise a mixture of brome grass and alfalfa better than brome alone; A mixture of alfalfa and brome or timothy will cure more readily than alfalfa alone and not being as concentrated as alfalfa, there is not the opportunity for harm by overfeeding. It is hoped that the investigation of forage crops for this section will occupy a steadily increasing _place in the Substation efforts each succeeding year for without doubt cereal production has been carried past the limit of profitableness under the present system of 'one crop' farming. ' I POTATO TRIALS Tests with potatoes included 17 varieties tried in various sized plats. The yields are presented in Table XIV. The varieties are arranged alphabetically while numerals in parenthesis indicate early and late varieties.
