Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For well over one hundred years society had considered ways of helping prisoners on their release from prison, but there had been no serious attempt to assess in a scientific manner the value of such efforts. Originally published in 1974, this book broke with this tradition and was the first full-scale work published in this country evaluating carefully whether an active policy of finding suitable employment for men immediately on their release from prison had beneficial results. The first part of the book discusses the historical development of prison after-care from its early origins in the nineteenth century and indicates how, up to the Second World War, the primary object of after-care had been regarded as the reinstatement of the ex-prisoners in employment. Gradually the specific task of finding jobs for ex-prisoners had become a peripheral activity considered as the responsibility of the Department of Employment. The effectiveness of the Department’s pre-release procedure for prisoners is discussed. The rest of the book considers the fascinating Apex project set up to examine the effectiveness of finding work for ex-prisoners. The work of Apex continued to develop and expand, but the present study considers the first five years when over four hundred men were randomly selected from two London prisons and offered the services of a specialist employment agency. The outcome for these men is compared with a control group of over three hundred men randomly selected from the same prisons. This study is concerned with the general run of the prison population and interestingly shows how some prisoners accept and others reject the offer of an employment service. It further indicates the enormous efforts sometimes needed to find suitable employment for prisoners on release. The outcome of the job interviews, arranged in terms of the proportions attending the interviews, starting the jobs and the length of time men stayed in the jobs arranged, is vital reading for anyone involved in after-care. An important part of the work is the examination of the subsequent reconviction rates for the various groups of offenders and the implication that it seems possible to predict men who are unlikely to be helped by the simple provision of employment on release. The final chapter considers critically some of the assumptions upon which the Apex project was based, and the possible use of computer techniques in the individualization of treatment is briefly discussed. The author was particularly well qualified to discuss this subject, for, apart from his work over a number of years with several after-care organizations, the present project involved working in prisons for over three years as well as interviewing and talking to men after their release. The findings of this study will interest the wide variety of people concerned with prison after-care. Criminologists, sociologists, probation officers and all others working in prisons and after-care will recognize the important implications of the material presented in this book.

Book Synopsis Punishment and Welfare by : David Garland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this classic of law and society scholarship continues to shape the research agenda of today’s sociology of punishment. It is now republished with a new Preface by the author. Punishment and Welfare explores the relation of punishment to politics, the historical formation and development of criminology, and the way in which penal reform grew out of the complex set of political projects that founded the modern welfare state. Its analyses powerfully illuminate many of the central problems of contemporary penal and welfare policy, showing how these problems grew out of political struggles and theoretical debates that occurred in the first years of the 20th century. In conducting this investigation, David Garland developed a method of research which combines detailed historical and textual analysis with a broader sociological vision, thereby synthesizing two forms of analysis that are more often developed in isolation. The resulting genealogy will interest everyone who works in this field. “… a brilliant book … the main arguments of Punishment and Welfare are undoubtedly some of the most tenacious and exciting to emerge from the field of criminology in many years.” — Piers Bierne, Contemporary Sociology “… one of the most important pieces of work ever to emerge in British criminology. It is a study of depth, subtlety and complexity … Garland’s integration of close historical details with a broader sociological vision provides a model methodology….” — Stan Cohen, British Journal of Criminology “This study shows how early 20th-century penal policy was a function of the nation’s social welfare practices. Garland’s theory is as applicable to the 21st century as it is to that earlier era: A tour de force.” — Malcolm Feeley, University of California–Berkeley

Download or read book No Easy Road written by Sallie Trotter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969, Sallie Trotter was the first woman social worker ever appointed in Britain to work inside an all-male prison – Wandsworth, in fact – with more freedom than had hitherto been offered to anyone not strictly of the prison staff. She was made responsible for the welfare and rehabilitation of over 1,500 men, none of them first-offenders. No Easy Road is the product of an experience that is quite unique. The first part is an account of her experiences within the prison walls, of the prison and its staff and of the criminals themselves; also of the day to day routine and problems raised by her unusual situation as a woman among so many tough and possibly dangerous men. The second part considers the theories of others with regard to treatment of the criminal and the author’s own attempts to analyse them. The third part is devoted to the author’s own ideas, for instance, on rehabilitation, the moral issues, and the factors that turn a man into a criminal. It is a serious book, but the author brings a completely fresh mind to bear on problems which have for too long been a male monopoly, whether the writers have been former officials and inmates, or outside critics and reformers. This new viewpoint seems to have been highly successful in the prison itself, and it certainly makes her book wholly absorbing. She has many valuable ideas to contribute and many interesting stories to relate, and the way in which her own personality emerges is particularly striking. With prisons and prisoners still very much in the public eye, this study continues to hold relevance today.
