Download or read book Volcanism in Antarctica: 200 Million Years of Subduction, Rifting and Continental Break-up written by J.L. Smellie and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir is the first to review all of Antarctica’s volcanism between 200 million years ago and the Present. The region is still volcanically active. The volume is an amalgamation of in-depth syntheses, which are presented within distinctly different tectonic settings. Each is described in terms of (1) the volcanology and eruptive palaeoenvironments; (2) petrology and origin of magma; and (3) active volcanism, including tephrochronology. Important volcanic episodes include: astonishingly voluminous mafic and felsic volcanic deposits associated with the Jurassic break-up of Gondwana; the construction and progressive demise of a major Jurassic to Present continental arc, including back-arc alkaline basalts and volcanism in a young ensialic marginal basin; Miocene to Pleistocene mafic volcanism associated with post-subduction slab-window formation; numerous Neogene alkaline volcanoes, including the massive Erebus volcano and its persistent phonolitic lava lake, that are widely distributed within and adjacent to one of the world’s major zones of lithospheric extension (the West Antarctic Rift System); and very young ultrapotassic volcanism erupted subglacially and forming a world-wide type example (Gaussberg).

Book excerpt: First published in 1997, the Compendium is an important reference tool for everyone who works in or visits the Antarctic Peninsula - setting forth updated site-descriptive information, census data, species presence/absence data, and regional maps compiled by the Antarctic Site Inventory project since 1994. The Inventory is operated by the US non-profit science and educational organization Oceanites, Inc., the only non-profit, publicly supported, science project working in Antarctica, and the only project monitoring and analysing environmental changes throughout the vastly warming Antarctic Peninsula ecosystem, where it's warming faster - or as fast - as any other location on Earth. The new, 3rd edition covers the 142 sites visited and censused by Antarctic Site Inventory researchers in 17 field seasons through February 2011.
Book Synopsis Environmental Management by : Uberoi
Download or read book Environmental Management written by Uberoi and published by Excel Books India. This book was released on 2004-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Management, with few exceptions, is not taught in colleges, universities, technical and management institutions. The result is that the students of these institutions lack knowledge and sensitisation to environmental issues. They lack the awareness of environmental consequences of human actions. To fill this void, Environmental Management is timely. The book provides background material to various environmental problems. It surveys a range of topics from sustainable development and ecological imperatives to strategies for managing environmental issues. The problem of pollution, waste management, biological diversity and forest management have been analysed in the light of laws and international conventions and treaties. The book brings out the realities about the damage being inflicted on the environment and our exploitive attitude to nature. It concludes with discussion and debate about values in nature and touches upon the subject of metamorphosis of the whole trajectory of attitudes in modern societies.

Book Synopsis The International Antarctic Weather Forecasting Handbook by : John Turner
Download or read book The International Antarctic Weather Forecasting Handbook written by John Turner and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents an overview of the meteorology and climatology of the Antarctic aimed at the forecaster who are new to working on the continent. Many forecasters who arrive at Antarctic research stations have no previous experience of forecasting on the continent and many come from the Northern Hemisphere, so making it even more difficult for them to adjust to the analysis and forecasting tasks that they will have to carry out. Although the majority of the forecasters will have had some training in Antarctic forecasting methods prior to travelling South this section of the handbook should be a useful introduction to the meteorological conditions experienced across the continent. In addition, in Appendix 4 there is a suggested training programme for Antarctic weather forecasters that presents a more structured introduction to analysis and prediction techniques for those who are required to prepare training modules.

Book Synopsis The Antarctic Dictionary by : Bernadette Hince
Download or read book The Antarctic Dictionary written by Bernadette Hince and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2000-11-10 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s most isolated continent has spawned some of the most unusual words in the English language. In the space of a mere century, a remarkable vocabulary has evolved to deal with the extraordinary environment and living organisms of the Antarctic and subantarctic. Here, for the first time, is a complete guide to the origin and definitions of Antarctic words. Like other historical dictionaries, The Antarctic Dictionary gives the reader quotations for each word. These quotations are the life-blood of the dictionary — more than 15 000 quotations from about 1000 different sources give the reader a unique insight into the way the language of Antarctica has evolved. The reader will find out what it means to be slotted, the shortcomings of homers, the joys of a donga and the hazards of a growler. The Antarctic Dictionary has been meticulously researched, and will appeal to all those who have been to the frozen continent or have ever dreamed of going there. It will also appeal to those fascinated by the development of language. With a forward by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
