Book excerpt: This book examines case studies of recent prison riots in five states, including the 1971 radical uprising in Attica, New York, and the infamous 1981 bloodbath at the New Mexico Penitentiary. The most extensive and detailed work yet written on US prison riots, the authors explain the occurrence and variations of riots as a reflection of the administrative breakdown of the prison system within a changing ideological context. A theoretical appendix helps make this work an ideal introduction to sociological theories of collective action.

Book excerpt: This book on the 1980 Penitentiary of New Mexico riot is by far the most comprehensive, best-researched and most credible publication on this topic. It examines the prison administration, the correctional officers and the inmates in great detail. Clues to the impending riot are documented, and the causes of the riot and contributing factors are discussed. The pre-riot, riot and post-riot stages of the event are covered. In addition to providing chapters on the negotiation about and investigation into the insurrection, the significance and consequences of the riot are assessed. Separate chapters discuss the families of the hostage correctional officers, the inmate families, the media and medical first responders. Tours of the prison are discussed, and paranormal aspects of the riot documented. There are ghosts in the prison! This prison riot differed from most in that no inmates tried to escape. That is because this was not a traditional prison riot but rather one intended to initiate public and media awareness of terrible living conditions and to create public and media dialogue about inmate complaints. In the years immediately prior to the riot ACLU attorneys had submitted two Consent Decrees to federal courts, and the prison administration was forced to promise to address more than 200 inmate grievances. In fact they ignored the decrees and cracked down harder on the inmates. The inevitable result was the death of an unknown but undoubtedly significant number of inmates and countless serious injuries. The research foundation of this book is the most complete of any book about the riot. All published articles and books and blogs and government reports about the riot are included. Most significantly, interviews with correctional officers and family members provide intimate personal insight into the motives, madness and mutilations of this murderous riot.

Book excerpt: This is a case study of the violence and disorder that have become endemic in U. S. prisons. The 1980 riot at the Penitentiary of New Mexico was one of the worst riots in prison history. Thirty-three inmates were killed and hundreds were injured. The author demonstrates how this riot, and the growing disorder that preceded it, reflect important shifts in the organizational structure and philosophy of prison management in the U. S. The Penitentiary in Crisis analyzes how shifts in prisoner control strategies disrupted important power relations between inmates and staff and created disorder. The author's experiences as a corrections counselor and planner in New Mexico corrections and his later role as principal researcher for the official investigation of the riot give him a unique perspective for understanding the riot and the prison's organization and history.

Book excerpt: The author is a proud sponsor of the 2020 SAGE Keith Roberts Teaching Innovations Award—enabling graduate students and early career faculty to attend the annual ASA pre-conference teaching and learning workshop. Mapping The Social Landscape is one of the most established and widely-used readers for Introductory Sociology. The organization follows that of a typical introductory sociology course and provides coverage of key concepts including culture, socialization, deviance, social structure, social inequality, social institutions, and social change. Susan J. Ferguson selects, edits, and introduces 58 readings representing a plurality of voices and views within sociology. The selections include classic statements from great thinkers like C. Wright Mills, Karl Marx, and Max Weber, as well of the works of contemporary scholars who address current social issues. Throughout this collection, there are many opportunities to discuss individual, interactional, and structural levels of society; the roles of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality in shaping social life; and the intersection of statuses and identities. Included with this title: The password-protected Instructor Resource Site (formally known as SAGE Edge) offers access to all text-specific resources, including a test bank and editable, chapter-specific PowerPoint® slides.

Book excerpt: The Bloodiest Prison Uprising in US Penal History provides lessons for present-day institutions involved in American corrections. This is the untold story of the man in charge, who was intimately involved in the bloody prison uprising, and how he later suffered the politics of the uprising. Nominated as Secretary of Corrections two days before the New Mexico State Prison near Santa Fe exploded with violence on February 2, 1980, author Adolph B. Saenz was deeply involved in ending the prison insurrection, but not until thirty-three inmates died and more than two hundred others were injured. The murdered inmates and their killers are identified, along with the corrections and state officials who were involved in the prison debacle. The problems and politics of dealing with a mass prison uprising are described in graphic detail, even as the book resonates with present situations and problems in American prisons.

Book excerpt: Crisis Negotiations: Managing Critical Incidents and Hostage Situations in Law Enforcement and Corrections, the sixth edition, is an invaluable resource for mitigating, managing, or responding to high risk negotiation incidents. This revision includes the current research on negotiating high-risk incidents in the classroom and the field. It includes an applied analysis of the value of psychopathology to high-risk perpetrators. It refines the "empirical eclecticism" introduced in the fourth edition to provide a conceptual basis for crisis negotiations. The authors include summary bullet points at the end of each chapter for easy reference when negotiators are in the field and a review of the literature since the last edition appeared. Their discussion of the strategic planning process involved in high-risk negotiation incidents focuses clearly on the critical questions negotiators need to ask themselves about any high-risk incident and provides a practical approach to the psychology of individuals that engage in high-risk incidents. Known as "the bible" to experienced professionals in the field, this sixth edition of Crisis Negotiations is vital for practitioners as well as for criminology, criminal justice or psychology courses in crisis management, applied psychology, and special operations in law enforcement and corrections. Instructors will find it well supported by ancillary materials including discussion questions, slide presentations, and a test bank, as well as case studies and self-assessment quizzes for students, making it easy to develop a first-time course or to integrate it into an existing course.
