Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988. Leading international researchers in regional economic development have contributed an integrated set of chapters reviewing the whole field and taking stock of current thinking. The book is in honour of François Perroux, the father of regional development theory, whose contributions to two important concepts in economics – time and space – have been substantial. The book comprises five parts. Part one covers Perroux's work in general and on growth poles in particular. Part two deals with 'the politics of place', population and regional development, techniques for regional policy analysis and a neoclassical approach to regional economics. In part three the Canadian scene is reviewed at national and regional levels. In part four chapters on urban development, small and medium-size cities, and capital grants deal with the experiences of other countries. Part five concludes the book with a chapter on growth poles, optimal size of cities, and regional disparities and government intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Libya has been one of the most remarkable of the Arab oil producers. It has combined an aggressive foreign policy, a domestic political revolution and extraordinary economic growth over the last decade. This book focuses on the development of the Libyan economy over this period. In the boom years of the oil market Libya’s revenues exploded. With the current decline of Arab oil revenues many of the projects undertaken then now look less realistic. The book surveys both the structural developments in the Libyan economy and the experience of individual sectors. It considers the potential for industrial development and the prospects for agriculture both in terms of natural resources and political commitments. The book also examines developments in the service sector, especially banking. Although it recognises the acute problems of the Libyan economy, the book is broadly optimistic for prospects through to the year 2000. First published in 1987.

Book excerpt: Since the early 1960s the Korean experience represents a fairly extreme example of 1 development strategy--the open, export led, labor intensive model. Since the onset of rapid economic growth in the early 1960s, triggered by a set of liberalizing economic policy reforms, manufactured exports have expanded at an average annual rate of over 25% and have provided much of the impetus for the growth of industry and industrial employment. Expanded domestic markets for intermediates and capital equipment have brought substantial import-substituting industrial growth and a relative abundance of domestic and international finance. Another aspect of Korea's experience which makes it a valuable case study is the fact that the country entered this period of development with an exceptionally equally distributed stock of human and physical wealth. The Korean case represents close to an extreme in 2 dimensions: rapid, open, export led, labor intensive growth combined with markedly egalitarian initial social and economic structures. For the student of demographic transition, Korea's experience is noteworthy because of the rapidity of change. The crude birthrate declined 40% between 1960-75. The mechanisms and socioeconomic determinants of this transition are questions of substantial interest to those concerned with population problems. Kwon illuminates the historical antecedents to this period of rapid demographic change. It was the drastic upheaval of Korean society during the wartime period that set the stage for fertility transition. The dislocations and destruction of the Korean War completed the process. The war greatly weakened the family structure of Korean society and put and end to early marriage. In addition to affecting family values and birth control practice in Korea, it directly interfered with family formation and fertility. Repetto explores the channels of influence through which the economic development of Korea affected the demographic transition. Kim demonstrates that the policies with the most pronounced effect of population growth and distribution have been implicit and indirect. Kim and Sloboda sheds light on the economic forces behind migration through the analysis of new data on the economic characteristics of migrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cases in Economic Development: Projects, Policies and Strategies presents cases on project analysis, sectoral planning, and macroeconomic policies. The cases are set in an imaginary country called Beracia in order to simulate actual planning experience. Beracia has been designed with a greater than normal range of problems, so that it can encompass the features of mineral-rich countries such as Zambia and Peru; agrarian economies such as the Philippines and Ivory Coast; and aspiring exporters of manufactures such as Colombia and Pakistan. This text has 11 cases divided into five sections. After providing an overview of development planning, development goals and strategies, and planning theory and practice, the book introduces the fictional country in the next section, which presents four reports similar to World Bank economic reports on developing countries (economic and political developments; income and employment; trade and payments; and fiscal and financial developments). Sufficient data are elaborated to explain the economy’s salient features. The third section focuses on assumptions and controversies surrounding project analysis, while the section on sectorial planning introduces the reader to input-output analysis, efficiency indicators, education planning, and industrial strategy. The section on macroeconomic planning covers macroeconomic forecasts; balance-of-payments crisis; fiscal planning and reform; and income inequality and poverty. The cases span many sectors, from mining and agriculture to manufacturing, transport, education, and health. This book is written primarily for students, professional economists, and experienced policy analysts.

Book excerpt: Combining vast scholarship and a deep understanding of Arab culture, Nadav Safran has written a sophisticated book about the politics of Saudi Arabia. In a narrative that emphasizes the Saudis' sense of the precariousness of their state and of their position in the Middle East, Safran demystifies the behavior of the Kingdom's rulers. Security has long been the predominant concern of Saudi Arabia. In 1981, the Kingdom's defense and security budget was an immense $25 billion, the fourth largest in the world, after the United States, the Soviet Union, and China, and the highest in the world on a per capita basis. Safran traces the roots of Saudi preoccupation with security through half a century, discerning political struggles and policy differences in the Saud family and how they have affected the position of the country. His treatment provides an enlightening perspective on the interplay of the politics of the elite; shifting inter-Arab alignments and rivalries; war, revolution, and other cataclysmic events in the Persian Gulf; the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict; and the involvement of the United States in the Middle East.
