Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Progress in 1870 In compliance with the requirements of the first of the above quoted sections, at the last session of the Legislature I submitted a brief report Of the progress Of the Survey during the first seven months of its existence. In addition to such report of progress I submitted a sketch of the geologi cal structure Of the State, now, for the first time, accurately and fully determined, a preliminary geological map, the exclusive work of the pres ent geological corps, an enumeration of the materials already collected for the final report and a sketch of the plan of operations for the future. With this report of progress were submitted reports on the geology of the southern portion of the State by Professors Andrews and Orton. Of this report twenty-five hundred copies were ordered by the Senate and during the summer were printed and have been distributed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Progress of the State Geological Survey of Michigan Presented, 1871: Presented to the State Geological Board, Nov. 22, 1870 Chapter four is devoted to Dimensions. After furnishing the different lengths of degrees of longitude and latitude within the State, with intervals of space corresponding to one minute and one second of time, a' table of air-line distances between the principal points of the State is given, and then a complete list of all the islands belonging to the State which exceed one one-hundredth of a square mile in area. It is found that the number of these islands is 179, with a total area of acres. Chapter five is devoted to an exposition of the system of survey of the public lands. The inaccuracies incident to the system are noticed - both those which are inherent and those which are casual. The more important provisions of the State laws in reference to surveys are cited; and a brief account is given of the origin and character of the old territorial patents, whose lines are unconformable with those of the United States surveys. The sixth chapter consists of a table of areas of the several townships of the State, from the records of the Land Othee at Lansing. These are arranged by counties and towns. Appended is a table of areas of the islands of the State, with an indica tion of the counties to which they severally belong. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Annual Report of the Park Commission of the City of Allegheny: January 1st, 1870 In September of last year, your Commissioners visited the cities of Philadelphia, New York, Brook lyn, Baltimore, and Washington, for the purpose of inspecting the Parks of those cities. The value of this trip cannot be too highly estimated, and, without attempting to burden this Report with details, it is safe to say that all of the visiting members came back with more enlarged views and liberal ideas as to the proper treatment of our Park Grounds. The governing object of the trip was, in effect, to profit by the experience of other cities, instead of pursu ing the fogyish idea of learning everything at the expense of failures. In relation to the manner of constructing walks, and on the subject of drainage and ornamentation, the time and money spent is as nothing in value to the information received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Selectmen and Superintending School Committee of the Town of Bristol: For the Year Ending March 1, 1870 The, spring term, commencing in May, was kept by sarah L. Day, who had been teacher of this department since its Commencement in October, 1867. The largest number in attendance was 61. Miss Day conducted the school with her usual success and although regretting it, yet none could blame her for resigning this fora more eligible situation. Miss Day had admirable tact in managing the little folks, and her scholars loved her. She was succeeded by katie F. George, who kept the fall and winter terms, commencing Aug. 31, and ending Dec. 31. Under her tuition the school made good progress and did much credit to both teacher and pupils at the closing examination; at which time all in the first class were advanced to the intermediate department. Miss George at once secured the affection Of her pupils, and the best of feeling prevailed in the school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Progress, 1907-1917, Vol. 27 To write a critical and balanced narrative of recent times is always a difficult task. In the first place, the materials for judging the character and motives of men are imperfect; for reputations of political leaders wax and wane rapidly in their own lifetimes; and the intimate personal documents and letters, which are the breath of life to the historical writer, commonly appear only after the person to whom they refer has passed off the stage. In the second place, the significance of events undergoes a change; many debates, controversies, discussions, investigations and laws, which absorb the attention for the time being, may a few decades later shrink into forgetfulness. It is a hard matter to seize upon events and issues as they pass and be sure that they are vital things in which later generations will be interested. In the third place, it is hard for a writer to fix on the live point of view which will bring into focus what the people of to-day are really contributing to their own upbuilding. These difficulties have been faced and so far as possible vanquished, in Professor Ogg's National Progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annual Report of the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota, to the Governor of Minnesota: For the Fiscal Year Ending November 30, 1870 The past year has indeed been a year of progress and suc cess, and it is a matter of peculiar pleasure to note the fact that there has been a gratifying advancement in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the University. The large increase of students from all parts of the State during the past few months fully assures us that an interest has been awakened in its behalf among the people that urges beyond a doubt the question, how can we best and most rap idly prepare for that large class of young men and young women of the State who will soon be thronging in upon us, seeking the privileges of a State Institution. We earnestly hope that this report may be candidly and considerately read, not only by your Excellency and each member of the Legislature, but by the whole people of our own State, as it chronicles faithfully another period of the rapid development of a University, interesting in its history, and dear to every citizen of our prosperous commonwealth. Since the opening of the Preparatory Department in 1868 with forty students in attendance, the number has steadily increased, until there are now enrolled upwards of three hundred, representing nearly every section of the state, many of whom are in the regular collegiate course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Reports on Educational Subjects, 1896-7 The following pages aim at showing in a statistical form the progress which was made towards a general provision of elementary education in England and Wales during the first quarter of a century from the passing of the Elementary Edu cation Act, 1870. The tables trace the growth of the Operations of the central and local authorities since that time; show to how great an extent public subsidies have been supplemented by voluntary contributions; and give an approximate estimate of the total amount spent on public elementary education (including the training of teachers) during the period under review. They contain an analysis of the conditions on which grants were paid to the schools under the various Codes of the Education Department in force during the years 1870 95. They indicate the increase in the number of teachers, the amount of their average salaries, and the contrast between the number of students who, at the beginning and end of the period, were in course of training for the profession of teaching in elementary schools. They give the number Of day and evening schools under inspection for 1870 - 95, the number of scholars on their registers and in average attendance, and the ages of the pupils in the day schools. Further details are also given as to the subjects of instruction and the provision which has been made for school libraries and school savings banks.
