Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects During the Year 1882: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy, and Special Report on Wireworm The season of 1882 was, on the whole, remarkably free from wide-spread attacks of insects occurring to any greatly injurious extent, with the exception of those of Aphides, which were the cause of serious loss, amounting to little less than devastation of the Hop crops. Reports from many localities, including England, Scotland, and the South-west of Ireland, mention that very little harm was caused by attack, as, in consequence of the weather being generally suitable for plant-growth, the crops held their way under moderate injury; and also the amount of rainfall, or of showers, was unfavourable to the increase of some kinds of insects, and checked the activity by which, in sunshine and drought, many of them spread themselves far and wide. For this reason, although Turnip Fly, the great cause of loss in 1881, made its appearance, the increase did not again become a general disaster. The chief attacks were those of Apple Weevil on the Apple blossom in the spring, and some bad cases of local injury from Daddy-longlegs grubs; later on the caterpillar of the Winter Moth did much harm to leafage; and the circumstance occurred (very rarely observed in this country) of attack by Cockchafer grubs taking place, to a seriously hurtful extent, on the roots of young Pines in plantations extending over a large extent of country. In the absence of any generally prevalent drought in May, the general prevalence of orchard and Oak-leaf caterpillars, which caused such severe damage in the two preceding years, was little reported; but the weather influences of the continued mild winter are keeping presence of some of the crop attacks in activity to a degree which may require attention. From specimens sent me only a few weeks ago, maggot is present unusually early in the young Wheat plant; the very injurious caterpillars of the Small Swift Moth, which feed on different kinds of roots, are also at work and in Clover I have more than usual presence of maggots of the Glover and Pea-leaf Weevil at the roots, and of Eelworm Stem-sickness. In the case of the Wheat and of the Stem-sick Clover, it would be so very desirable to be on the alert to apply (where needed) the requisite dressings, that I just mention what is going forward now, although the observations extend beyond those of 1897. Amongst some of the special points of enquiry during the past year, more than usual attention has been given to imported insect infestations in Corn and Flour; and amongst Turnip attacks, the appearance of the Diamond-back Moth at various North British localities, rather late in the past season, suggests that it would be desirable to be on the watch presently to check the very first signs of presence of the pest. To give the long list of infestations regarding which inquiries were received, would be for the most part a mere enumeration of our best known insect pests, as Wireworms, Daddy Long-legs, Carrot grubs, &c.; but so far as I could judge by the reports sent to myself, there was a remarkable difference in amount of presence of some of our very commonest attacks. Some were present to an unusual amount, some unusually absent. Amongst corn attacks little was reported of Gout Fly (Chlorops), though it was mischievous to some degree; and very little either of Corn Sawfly, or Hessian Fly; or of the deformed growth in Oat plants, known as "Tulip-root," caused by presence of "Stem Eel-worms." On the other hand Wheatbulb maggot was prevalent and injurious to a serious extent; Corn Aphis was more than usually reported, and a few attacks were observed of the malformation of grains in Wheat-ears, popularly known as "Purples," or "Cockle-galls," which are due like "Tulip-root" to the presence of Eel-worms, though of a different species of Tylenclius. The Mediterranean Flour Moth (see pp. 46-52) continues to spread its destructive presence in Wheat-flour mills and stores, and since my paper on the subject has passed through the press, I have been favoured from Dr. Charles Lindeman (the well-known authority on agricultural Entomology in Russia) with information of the pest having been discovered in a locality in Moscow, to which it had been imported from London in infested sacks. Reverting to attacks on the growing crops. Amongst Turnip infestations the very common attacks of Flea Beetle, Surface Caterpillars, and Turnip Aphis, were less reported than is often the case. Mangold crops in many places had (as has been repeatedly the case of late years) again to bear the brunt of sharp attack Of Leaf Maggot. Corn Aphis (so far as information sent in showed) was the most injurious corn insect attack Of the season. Diamond-back Moth presence was widely noticed, and in some localities (perhaps most of all on the north easterly parts of Norfolk, and near St. Andrew's, in Scotland) as being observable in great numbers but compared to the outbreak Of 1891 little caterpillar attack followed, so that serious damage only occurred locally, not as a widespread scourge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests During the Year 1885: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy IN once again submitting my Annual Report, I have, as in previous years, to offer my hearty thanks, both to the many friends who have kindly aided me by their communications, and also to the Agricultural Press for the great assistance that their support gives to the subject of prevention of farm insects, and the encouragement which the courteous assistance they grant gives to myself in the work. The chief features of the insect attacks of the past season have been the great amount of Aphides or Plant Lice, which swarmed on most crops in consequence of the long drought being favourable to their increase. Surface-caterpillars also were unusually destructive throughout the autumn, and but for the snow, which in melting brings wet alternately with frost to bear on them (a state of things especially destructive to them), a further visitation was to be expected this spring. Some kinds of injurious crop insects, not previously noticed in these Reports, have been brought forward, and amongst various notes of habits, means of prevention, &c., which have been reported, I wish particularly to draw attention to the observation at p. 21 on absence of injury from Daddy Longlegs grubs where the land was thoroughly trampled by cattle. The observations of each year show more and more the importance of autumn measures to destroy, in embryo, the pests that, if left alone, raise (as a regularly recurring loss and trouble) the various attacks which devastate cr0ps sown after broken-up pasture.
