Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, Official Discourse is an unofficial report of theoretical investigations into a specific state of practice- the publication of reports of official inquiries into law, order and justice issues. The commissions, tribunals and committees of inquiry scrutinized in this book examine problems arising from wrongful imprisonment, police corruption, industrial picketing, and communal rioting and internment in Northern Ireland. Focusing on the reasons why government reports take the form they do, the authors venture into the areas of linguistics, psychoanalysis and Marxism. The book is an exercise in discourse analysis, an exercise in theoretical work that looks at the relationships between theory and literary production, and a critique of official conceptions of law, order and justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of a two volume study, provides an historical account of complaints against Metropolitan police officers between formation of the force in 1829 and codification of remedies for misconduct under the Police Act 1964. A complainant centred standpoint is developed to counteract the marginalization of the interests of victims, which is held to demonstrate that the drive for effective and efficient law enforcement has overshadowed the public interest in holding officers to account for misconduct. After officer accountability before the criminal courts diminished in the nineteenth century, missed opportunities to reform complaints procedures following commissions of inquiry in 1906-08, 1928 and 1960-62 are discussed. The second volume of the study, Combating Impunity: Complaints Against Metropolitan Police, 1964-2021, will examine the part played by complainants and civil society organisations in combating police impunity in the citizen oversight era.

Book excerpt: Until the events of 11 July, 1963, rocketed him into the headlines of the national press, Tanky Challenor, was only known in- and admired by- the close-knit circle of friends in the SAS and the Metropolitan Police. He was also known, but only grudgingly admired, by most of the villains in the West End. On that fateful July day, however, a demonstration was staged outside Claridge's Hotel where King Paul and Queen Frederika of Greece were staying. The demonstrating at Queen Frederika's supposedly malign influence on Greek polotics, and one of them was to claim that Challenor had “planted” a brick on him. In no time the name of Tanky Challenor became a household word. With the help of Alfred Draper, a journalist of many years' experience, Tanky now tells the story of his life from his childhood, through his time in the SAS, where he won a well deserved Military Medal, to his eventual downfall. In no way does he attempt to excuse himself not to pour whitewash over events that have been long established. He simply sets out to explain how it came about that a young man of undoubtable intelligence but limited educational background ended up in a mental home. Now for one moment does he blame the Army, which clearly played a major role in the forming of his character, and his time in which he obviously enjoyed. But when a man is obliged to spend months behind the enemy lines and taught not only to kill but to take pleasure in killing, it is bound to leave some mark on his personality. Tanky leaves the reader to draw his own conclusions from this story which seldom moves at less then a gallop, and is packed, not only with adventure, but also with much wit and shrewd observation.

Book excerpt: In a Britain that is becoming increasingly fractious and intolerant, the responsibility for upholding the values of broadmindedness, pluralism and individual freedom is passing from the politicians to the judges. But the bonds of trust that bind people to their institutions are breaking down, and the values underpinning judicial law-making are now under threat from a new populism. Using vivid examples from the fall-out from Brexit, the threat to parliamentary democracy, the impact of terrorism and austerity and the actions of politicians trying to prevent judicial oversight of ministerial power, this book warns that the rule of law is a fragile ingredient of democracy which may too easily become side-lined unless it is vigorously upheld. Inigo Bing has spent his life in the law, first as a barrister and then as a judge, and has observed first-hand how values once regarded as sacred are now at risk from a new form of anger-driven and distrustful politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few things should go together better than psychology and law - and few things are getting together less successfully. Edited by four psychologists and a lawyer, and drawing on contributions from Europe, the USA and Australia, Applying Psychology to Criminal Justice argues that psychology should be applied more widely within the criminal justice system. Contributors develop the case for successfully applying psychology to justice by providing a rich range of applicable examples for development now and in the future. Readers are encouraged to challenge the limited ambition and imagination of psychology and law by examining how insights in areas such as offender cognition and decision-making under pressure might inform future investigation and analysis.
