An active research program consisting of five experimental studies was initiated and vigorously pursued during this period. Several additional experiments were designed and equipment procurement was initiated. An average operational efficiency of 64% was reached for the entire cyclotron facility. The extended operation for research purposes has furnished valuable data on stability and reliability of the magnet power supplies and R.F. system. The beam path into Room 1 became operational in December and is used primarily for radioisotope production. Plans are being developed for future installation of additional beam paths into Rooms 2 and 3. These beam paths are necessary for starting new research programs. (Author).

During this period the major efforts were in facility start-up. These efforts included beam extraction, transport to experimental stations and initiation of the experimental program. The first extracted beam was obtained on 12 February 1968. On 11 March 1968, a beam was transported through the 9-ft. radius of curvature analyzing magnet. On 27 April 1968, a beam was transported into Experimental Room 2. During May, isotope production was initiated in the cyclotron vault, and preliminary measurements on the Doppler-Shift Attenuation Experiment were started in Room 2. In June, preliminary scattering studies were begun in the 30 inch diameter scattering chamber in Room 3. (Author).

Book excerpt: The report describes the research program done at the NRL Sector-Focusing Cyclotron during the year 1972. The basic research program is devoted primarily to problems involving nucleon systems and light nuclei. Experimental results of deuteron breakup by protons are compared with exact calculations, and it is concluded that the calculations are not yet using the proper nuclear potential. The problem of deuteron breakup by deuterons has been investigated with the conclusion that it is not necessary to invoke a singlet final state interaction to explain observed spectra. The neutron radiotherapy project in the applications research program is investigating the efficacy of neutrons in the treatment of cancer. A number of measurements have been performed, including neutron dose rate, neutron energy spectra, depth doses for various collimators, oxygen enhancement ratios, and radiobiological effectiveness of this beam using various biological systems.
