Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports for the Year Ending November 12, 1945: Also a List of Officers and Members for 1945-46 The petition was granted and on October 27th thirteen gentle men met hy invitation at the house of William A. Reynolds on Elm Street, built over the cellar of John Davenport's residence. A committee of five, consisting of Henry White, Leonard Bacon, Horace Day, Frederick Croswell, and Henry Bronson, was chosen to prepare a plan for the organization of the contemplated society. Having done this, they called a meeting of the citizens of New Haven, which was held in the Office of the mayor, Hermanus M. Welch, on Nov. 14, 1862, at which twenty-seven persons were present. That evening this Society was formally constituted. Its first officers were Henry White, president; Eben E. Beardsley, vice-president; Horace Day, secretary; and William S. Chanley, treasurer. At the next meeting the first of the many papers that utter down the years was read by President White. For his subject he had chosen The History of Cutler Corner.
