Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report Book for Mining Engineers IN publishing the Second Edition of this pocket-hook, the Author desires to repeat a few words of explanation in regard to its scope and the use to which it is intended to he put. Its compilation is the outcome of some twent -seven years experience, gained by him in mine inspection and mine management in various districts in different parts of t is world, including Germany, Bohemia, France, Canada, the United States, India, Australia, South America and elsewhere; his idea being to endeavour to supply a want he has often himself felt, viz.: a systematic method upon which to base reports, that will save the engineer an unnecessary waste of labour and time, and enable him to preserve a record of his work in a condensed and handy form for subsequent reference; so that the salient points can he picked out in a few minutes, without the necessity of wading through pages of ms. Book Synopsis Field Book of Practical Mineralogy by : G. W. Miller
Download or read book Field Book of Practical Mineralogy written by G. W. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Book of Practical Mineralogy: How to Examine, and Report on Mines, Designed for the Use of Prospectors, Mining Men, Engineers, and Others The publication of this little volume is the result of a long cherished plan; although not as complete in its discussion of the subject of ore deposits, the examination of mines, assaying, etc., as were the author's original intention, these omissions are thought to have been compensated for in part by giving more space to the subjects of determinative mineralogy and blow-pipe analysis. In the composition and compilation of the subject matter herein contained, all due precautions have been observed in order to render the information perfectly reliable and trustworthy, and to this end all descriptions of minerals appearing in the tables were carefully compared with those given in the following named standard works on the subject of mineralogy: System of Mineralogy, by E. S. Dana; Determinative Mineralogy and Blowpipe Analysis, by Brush & Penfield. Other valuable authorities consulted are: Ore Deposits, by J. A. Phillips; Ore Deposits of the United States and Canada, by J. F. Kemp, and A Manual of Practical Assaying, by H. V. F. Furman. The names of all authorities consulted are mentioned in the foot notes. Where inadvertently omissions have occurred and due credit has not been given, the author would esteem it a favor to have his attention called to the neglect. He would also be pleased to receive criticisms on the work so that he may be able to take advantage of them should a future edition be called for. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Progress Armstrong County The question thus raised is very interesting to the syste matic geologist, in respect of the proper naming of our for mations, and would be of considerable practical importance to working geologists and mining engineers were they deal ing with coal measures beneath river level in this district of the State. But if the facts of the case be clearly com prehended the difference between the two statements will cause no inconvenience. The question is merely one of names, and this can easily be made apparent, but it is needful to explain its nature as well as to show how much ground it covers, and which of the reports of progress of the Survey have the reading of their text affected by it. A As regards the classification of the subjects treated in the present publi cation, the delegate found it necessary, under the altered circumstances of the case, to depart from his original instructions, as the latter were drawn up somewhat ambiguously, and therefore the following course, as more practical, has been adopted, viz. Z - To first describe the geological and mineralogical features of the country, with their metalliferous deposits and lodes; then to investigate and take note of the operations in the latter from their displacement by the miners, by means of various operations and appliances, through their subsequent manipulations to the final resultants of commercially valuable metals and other products, as well as the rejected wastes at the conclusion of the whole process. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to a History of Ironmaking and Coal Mining in Pennsylvania: Contributed to the Final Report of the Pennsylvania Board of Centennial Managers That there may be no misunderstanding. I wish distinctly to impress upon the mind of the reader the fact that I have not attempted to write a complete history of ironmaking and coal mining in Pennsylvania, but have assumed only to write such an introduction to their history as will contain a record of the principal events which mark the beginning of these two great industries of our State, and mark, also, the leading events in their subsequent development. Beginning with their beginning, I end with the progress they had made down to 1876, but only glance at the great gap between. Otherwise stated, the scope of the following pages embraces a statement of the first enterprises in iron making and coal mining in Pennsylvania, a reference to significant periods of their development, and a summary of ultimate results. Greater amplitude and detail could only have been possible by completely changing the plan upon which the two essays had been projected. I have undertaken to preserve only that part of the history of our iron and coal industries that is of most value and is in most danger of being lost. To those who would have been gratified to see in this volume a description of existing ironworks in Pennsylvania, it is proper that we should say that the American Iron and Steel Association published in 1876 a complete list of all such enterprises in the United States, which list is now being revised for publication in the spring of the present year.
