The appendix includes material on minimization of artifacts produced during replica preparation, salvage of scrolled replicas, edge retention during replication, and stereo effects. Throughout the text, variations in technique are discussed in order to guide the reader in the selection of an appropriate method to prepare replicas of a given structure. A variety of specialized procedures and detailed explanations are included as well as suggested replicating utensils for basic and specialized techniques. (Author).

First, there is no ambiguity to the interpretation-one does not have to invert the shadow direction. Second, there is no chance for artifacts due to swelling, shrinking, or straining such as are apt to develop with replicas shadowed after removal. There is, however, a serious difficulty which arises when shadowing a metal directly on a clean metal surface. The replicas are invariably bound so tightly to the specimen surface that it is necessary to etch away the specimen to release the replica. The chemical attack usually results in breaking the replica into small pieces and negates the re-replication of the specimen without repolishing and etching.
