Book Synopsis Gray Steel and Black Oil by : Thomas Wildenberg
Download or read book Gray Steel and Black Oil written by Thomas Wildenberg and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gray Steel and Black Oil is the first full-length treatment of the development of the fleet oiler concept in the U.S. Navy. The author, Thomas Wildenberg, authoritatively addresses the logistics of how fleets are able to stay at sea in an operational mode, a long-ignored but extremely important subject. For example, in World War II refueling at sea provided the U.S. Navy with the mobility it needed to accomplish its island-hopping advance toward Japan, as advocated in War Plan Orange. He explains how underway replenishment enabled U.S. carriers to range freely across the Pacific in the first months of the war, and later to remain on station far from their bases for weeks at a time. Today the refueling capability of a navy is as important as ever. With this book Wildenberg charts the concept from the first fleet oilers of World War I onward. He examines the Navy's plans between the wars, documents the experience of World War II, and covers the postwar transition period, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Numerous tables on ship design and capabilities, descriptions of ship types, photographs of every class of U.S. Navy fleet oiler, and ship drawings are also included.

This book was released on 2018-11-18 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information contained in NWP 4-01.4, Underway Replenishment, is directed toward preparing both the replenishment and customer ship for a replenishment evolution. Detailed rig make-up, requisite equipment, and standardized procedures are established to serve as specific guidelines for all aspects of replenishment at sea. NWP 4-01.4 has evolved over the years as a direct result of continuing fleet requirements to standardize procedures, furnish rig make-up guidance, and provide continuity in application and use. The highest degree of professional competence in UNREP evolutions is required for their safe and efficient conduct. Each ship shall ensure wide dissemination to all personnel involved in the planning of, supervision of, and participation in UNREP evolutions.

Download or read book A Study of Connected Replenishment at Sea Based on Load Requirements Through Data Analysis and Computer Simulation written by Marvin Roy Aardal and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By analyzing CONREP data for oiler (AO) and ammunition (AE) ships replenishing destroyers (DD) and attack carriers (CVA) with regard to day and night operation and load requirement, it is shown through Chi-Square goodness-of-fit tests that alongside time data can be fitted to an Erlang or exponential distribution. In addition, several methods for estimating the shape, scale, and shift parameters for gamma and Erland distributions are presented. Employing well known but analytically little used features of the replenishment operation, a computer simulation model is then formulated and programmed based on these distributions, and thus sensitive to changes in load requirements. Using the simulation as an experimental device, an example is run to demonstrate its use in estimating the time to complete the operation and conducting sensitivity analyses on the various load requirements. Download or read book Replenishment at Sea: Description of Transfer Model written by Fred R. McFadden and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described is a mathematical model that simulates the movement of solid cargo between two ships engaged in replenishment at sea. This memorandum is prepared as a guide for persons seeking to use the transfer model for analysis of replenishment at sea problems. It describes the variables treated by this model, its limitations, the method of preparing unit decks and the nature of the computer output. Illustrative examples are taken from the systems analysis where the different handling rates are described, developed, and justified. (Author).
