Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Casey, a forty-five-year-old divorcee with one son visits his ageing parents on the eve of his departure for Central America. He is about to commence his third trip to the region in the space of five years. All have been undertaken in the hope of finding out something about the fate of a younger brother, Kenny, who went to Central America years before only to lose contact with the family. After visiting Mexico City for several days, Steve travels to Managua, the Nicaraguan capital, where he begins to recall the course of his relationship with his ex-wife and much else about his earlier life. He goes on to make inquiries in regions that Kenny spent time in but encounters a series of dead ends, as in the past. He then takes his search to Honduras where he decides to help out a voluntary group in Tegcigalpa for nearly a month before moving on to El Salvador. In San Salvador, he meets an Australian aid worker who suggests that an expatriate living in the town of Suchitoto might have met Kenny. Steve calls on this man and learns that they were acquainted. The expatriate last had news of Kenny when the latter was about to enter Guatemala with the intention of taking some formal Spanish tuition. In the course of his wanderings, Steve recalls the time when his brother returned to Australia in February 1989, following a two-year spell in Central America. He remembers how he established himself in a bed-sit in Melbourne but being unable to find paid employment made do with voluntary work. Despite his efforts, however, Kenny quickly became disillusioned with the Australian way of life and within the space of approximately a year saved sufficient funds to make his way back to Central America. Steve travels to Guatemala. He visits several language schools in Antigua and Quetzaltenango but no one recalls Kenny. On the spur of the moment, he decides to enroll in classes at one of the schools in Quetzaltenango. During the course of a month's tuition, his fourth and last teacher at the school tells him about a community of internal refugees based in the Petn jungle. Several foreigners have helped the group in the past, he is informed. He calls at the Guatemala City office of the refugee group and decides that he will journey to the jungle. On the long trip, Steve avidly listens as Olga, a young member of the group, relates her story. As a result he makes some shattering discoveries. In addition, he is finally able to come to terms with the failure of his marriage and many of the other disappointments that have plagued his life to date.
Book Synopsis Healing with Art and Soul by : Kathy Luethje
Download or read book Healing with Art and Soul written by Kathy Luethje and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating collection of essays contains a variety of perspectives about the use of expressive arts for facilitating physical and emotional healing. Each author within brings a fresh approach and unique experiences to their writing. Within these pages, you will find many ideas for the use of the arts and can learn how to engage the inner layers of the self that allow natural healing processes of the body and soul to flourish. When we fully engage an art modality, we find ourselves in a place in our consciousness that could be called 'healingspace,' where we feel ourselves whole and re-member ourselves as well. From psychic trauma to physical illness, dis-ease of many kinds may be addressed through the various techniques discussed here. The tools offered by some authors are population specific and age appropriate, while several authors have given us the philosophical underpinnings for it all. While the authors within represent the grassroots voices of this new and rapidly expanding field, several of them have developed their own methods for using the arts, and have thriving practices. Our approach is wholistic. Music, visual arts, movement, dance, and poetry are discussed as separate modalities and in combination with one another in a process or flow. The reader will engage in our experiences with these modalities as they have been lived. The complementary CD that accompanies this book will allows the listener to have a full sound experience of toning. If a rationale is needed for establishing arts programs in medical centers or other health facilities, it can be found here. The book offers tools for self development and for group facilitation. Those wanting to expand their healing practice through the use of the arts will find the book to be a faithful guide. Anyone wishing for a fuller understanding of how the arts may work to facilitate healing will find much food for thought within these pages.

Book Synopsis Calling the Soul Back by : Christina Garcia Lopez
Download or read book Calling the Soul Back written by Christina Garcia Lopez and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality has consistently been present in the political and cultural counternarratives of Chicanx literature. Calling the Soul Back focuses on the embodied aspects of a spirituality integrating body, mind, and soul. Centering the relationship between embodiment and literary narrative, Christina Garcia Lopez shows narrative as healing work through which writers and readers ritually call back the soul—one’s unique immaterial essence—into union with the body, counteracting the wounding fragmentation that emerged out of colonization and imperialism. These readings feature both underanalyzed and more popular works by pivotal writers such as Gloria Anzaldúa, Sandra Cisneros, and Rudolfo Anaya, in addition to works by less commonly acknowledged authors. Calling the Soul Back explores the spiritual and ancestral knowledge offered in narratives of bodies in trauma, bodies engaged in ritual, grieving bodies, bodies immersed in and becoming part of nature, and dreaming bodies. Reading across narrative nonfiction, performative monologue, short fiction, fables, illustrated children’s books, and a novel, Garcia Lopez asks how these narratives draw on the embodied intersections of ways of knowing and being to shift readers’ consciousness regarding relationships to space, time, and natural environments. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Calling the Soul Back draws on literary and Chicanx studies scholars as well as those in religious studies, feminist studies, sociology, environmental studies, philosophy, and Indigenous studies, to reveal narrative’s healing potential to bring the soul into balance with the body and mind.
