Download or read book Actin written by James E. Estes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period August 5-9, 1992, and immediately preceding the 1992 Gordon Research Conference on Motile and Contractile Systems, the "Third International Conference on the Structure and Function of Ubiquitous Cellular Protein Actin" was held at the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, under the title "ACTIN '92". This conference focused on the fundamental properties and cellular functions of actin and actin based microfilament systems. The first conference in this series was held in 1982, in Sydney, Australia, and hosted by Dr. Cristobal G. dos Remedios and Dr. Julian A. Barden, both from the University of Sydney (New South Wales, Austrailia). The second conference convened in Monza, Italy in June 1987, and was organized by Dr. Roberto Colombo, University of Milan (Italy). This third gathering of researchers devoted to the study of actin and actin-associated proteins was organized by Dr. James E. Estes, Albany Stratton V A Medical Center and Dr. Paul 1. Higgins, Albany Medical College, who were assisted by an Organizing Committee consisting of Dr. Edward D. Korn (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, NIH), Dr. Thomas P. Stossel (Massachusetts General Hospital), Dr. Fumio Matsumura (Rutgers University), and Dr. Stephen Farmer (Boston University). This meeting was dedicated to the many pioneering contributions of Professor Fumio Oosawa to the field of actin research.
Download or read book Limb Salvage written by F. Langlais and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international group ofresearchers has met every 2 years since 1981 to examine the progress made in limb salvage techniques and the perspectives of this field of surgery. In 1989 the Fifth International Symposium On Limb Salvage (ISOLS) was held in Saint Malo and was attended by more than 300 participants from 34 different countries. The 105 papers presented, grouped under eleven main headings, have been included in this book. Limb salvage has indeed progressed in the years since the first symposium. Initially it essentially concerned tumours and the main aim was to salvage the diseased limb through non-mutilating surgery without jeopardizing the patient's prospects of survival. Now, with a confirmed high rate of 5-year disease-free survival, new goals can be set: improvement of the functional results and of the survival of our reconstructions. How can this be achieved: - By favouring muscle reattachment on the prosthesis, for instance through the use of a bone allograft-sleeved composite prosthesis? - By improving the survival of the arthroplasty through the develop ment of a more biological fixation of its stems? - By limiting the side effects of the necessary adjuvant treatments on the function of the allograft as well as on the fixation of the prosthesis? In addition, limb salvage procedures now concern not only primary tumours (and metastases, which must be treated using the same osteosynthetic and prosthetic techniques), but also reconstructive orthopaedic surgery as a whole.
Book Synopsis Animal Cell Technology: Developments towards the 21st Century by : E.C. Beuvery
Download or read book Animal Cell Technology: Developments towards the 21st Century written by E.C. Beuvery and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1083 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal cell technology is a discipline of growing importance, which aims not merely at understanding structure, function and behaviour of differentiated animal cells, but especially at the development of their abilities useful for clinical application. Topics of interest in this regard include: viral vaccines, pharmaceutical proteins and novel applications such as gene therapy and organ culture. Undoubtedly, these Proceedings of the joint Meeting of the European Society for Animal Cell Technology and the Japanese Association for Animal Cell Technology (Veldhoven, The Netherlands, September 1994) review the most recent status of the field, and will be most valuable to anyone actively involved in the culture of animal cells and its applications. The contributions to this volume were strictly selected on the basis of quality and novelty of contents. Kluwer is honoured to be able to add this work to its strongly developing publication programme in cell and tissue culture, which now has its connections to all major Societies in this field worldwide. Audience: Cell biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, immunologists, virologists and all other disciplines related to animal cell technology, working in an academic environment, as well as in (biotechnology or pharmaceutical) industry.

Book Synopsis Cell and Muscle Motility by : Jerry Shay
Download or read book Cell and Muscle Motility written by Jerry Shay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term cytoskeleton in muscle and nonmuscle cells refers to fibrous proteins that are directly or indirectly associated with cell shape, contractility, and/or motility. These cytoskeletal elements include microtubules and associated proteins, microfilaments and their binding proteins, and lastly, intermediate filaments. Even though the structure and function of myosin and tro pomyosin have been extensively investigated in muscle ceIls, considerably less is known about their functions in nonmuscle ceIls; they are often referred to generically as actin-binding proteins, as are a-actinin, filamin, vinculin, and others. Indeed, most nonmuscle researchers are unaware that the term intermedi ate filament was derived from the observation that the diameter of intermedi ate filaments is intermediate between those of actin (5 nm) and myosin (15 nm) and not intermediate between those of actin (5 nm) and microtubules (25 nm). It has therefore been the purpose of this series to attempt to bridge the communication gap that appears to exist between muscle and nonmuscle researchers. For those students and active scientists who are faced with the task of absorbing new data and concepts at an ever-accelerating rate, review essays are an excellent way to keep up. The essays in this volume, as weIl as in the previous ones, focus on topics of current interest. They are intended to be critical rather than exhaustive.
