Book Synopsis CFRP Tendons for the Repair of Post-tensioned, Unbonded Concrete Buildings by : Lucio Roger Amato
Download or read book CFRP Tendons for the Repair of Post-tensioned, Unbonded Concrete Buildings written by Lucio Roger Amato and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deterioration of prestressed concrete structures due to corrosion is a costly problem. This problem is accelerated in cold weather climates where de-icing salts are used. These salts accelerate the corrosion of the steel tendons greatly reducing the service life of the structures and leading to constant costly repairs. Recent research has shown composite materials such as Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) to be suitable alternatives to steel, providing similar strength without being susceptible to electrochemical corrosion. Carbon FRP in particular has great promise for prestressed applications, showing resistance to corrosion in environments that might be encountered in concrete and experiencing less relaxation than steel. This thesis outlines the testing and implementation of a post-tensioned system that uses CFRP tendons to replace corroded, unbonded post-tensioned steel tendons. This system was then implemented in a parking garage in downtown Toronto. To the author's knowledge, this is the first example of an unbonded, post-tensioned tendon replacement using FRP tendons. The system used split wedge anchors designed specifically for CFRP tendons at the University of Waterloo. The dead end was anchored by directly bonding the tendon to the concrete slab. Overall, the system was shown to work and provide a durable solution for unbonded post-tensioning systems. The CFRP tendon was successfully inserted in the opening left by the removal of the corroded tendon and stressed. It was found that the current anchorage configuration experienced large load losses of up to 60 % during the transfer. Changing the orientation of the anchor was found to reduce the load lost to a range of 1 % to 9 %.

Book Synopsis Durability of Post-tensioning Tendons by : fib Fédération internationale du béton
Download or read book Durability of Post-tensioning Tendons written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2006 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The durability of post-tensioning tendons depends undoubtedly on the durability of the materials used, but there are design concept specifics which are also of major importance: the post-tensioning layout and layers of protection such as concrete cover and selected materials in view of the aggressivity of the environment for instance. It is well known that sustainability principles guide the Engineer from the very beginning, at the project conception, during construction and the service life of a structure. Decisions made during conceptual and design stage have the largest influence on the durability and sustainability of post-tensioning tendons. fibBulletin 33 addresses the specifics for prestressed concrete structures: the durability of post-tensioning tendons. It should be noted that it does not repeat topics that have been addressed in other fib bulletins and which is common for both reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures. Pre-tensioning, which is used extensively in the precast industry, is not considered here, although conclusions and recommendations herein may, in many cases, also be applicable. This recommendation was prepared by Working Party 5.4.2, Durability specifics for prestressed concrete structures, in cooperation with fib Commission 9,Reinforcing and prestressing materials and systems. A preliminary version of this recommendation served as the basic document for the second workshop on "Durability of post-tensioning tendons", held on 11-12 October 2004 in Zurich. This workshop was a follow-up to the first workshop held in Ghent in 2001. Bulletin 33 includes revisions corresponding to the agreed results of the Zurich workshop.
Book Synopsis Prestressed Concrete Bridges by : Christian Menn
Download or read book Prestressed Concrete Bridges written by Christian Menn and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to make the material presented in my book, Stahlbetonbrucken, accessible to a larger number of engineers throughout the world. A work in English, the logical choice for this task, had been contemplated as Stahlbetonbrucken was still in its earliest stages of preparation. The early success of Stahlbetonbrucken provided significant impetus for the writing of Prestressed Concrete Bridges, which began soon after the publication of its predecessor. The present work is more than a mere translation of Stahlbetonbrucken. Errors in Stahlbetonbrucken that were detected after publication have been corrected. New material on the relation between cracking in concrete and corrosion of reinforce ment, prestressing with unbonded tendons, skew-girder bridges, and cable-stayed bridges has been added. Most importantly, however, the presentation of the material has been extensively reworked to improve clarity and consistency. Prestressed Concrete Bridges can thus be regarded as a thoroughly new and improved edition of its predecessor.

Book Synopsis Post-Tensioned Concrete: Principles and Practice, Third Edition by : K. Dirk Bondy
Download or read book Post-Tensioned Concrete: Principles and Practice, Third Edition written by K. Dirk Bondy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book combines history with academic notes for use at the university level, presenting design examples from actual jobs with applications and detailing for the practicing engineer. Chapter 1 tells the history of post-tensioned concrete as only Ken Bondy can tell it. Chapters 2-8 are the notes Dirk Bondy uses to teach Design of Prestressed Concrete Structures at UCLA and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. Chapters 9-13 are design examples that address many of the decisions faced by practicing engineers on typical projects. Chapters 13-14 cover the art of detailing and observing the construction of post-tensioned concrete. This knowledge was obtained over many years of working on our own projects and listening and learning from the the pioneers of post-tensioned concrete. Chapter 15 covers the slab on grade industry, which represents more sales of post-tensioning tendons than all other post-tensioning applications combined. Chapter 16 discusses the challenging application of post-tensioning-external post-tensioning.

Book Synopsis External Tendons for Bridges by : FIB – International Federation for Structural Concrete
Download or read book External Tendons for Bridges written by FIB – International Federation for Structural Concrete and published by FIB - International Federation for Structural Concrete. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of post-tensioning has been recognized for over a century. Interestingly, early developments started with external tendons, but failed to be recognized as a major construction technique for two main reasons: - Low tensile performance of early steels in combination with a poor knowledge of concrete creep and shrinkage properties, - Lack of a durable corrosion protection. With the technological progress, external tendons became increasingly popular in the 1980’s, as a post-tensioning method enabling inspection and, if necessary, replacement of tendons without demolition of structural members. Towards the end of the last century, more than 50 bridges have been built with external tendons, first in France and soon gaining traction in other countries. FIP published a state-of the-art report in May 1996 to provide a review of the application of external tendons, describing specific material problems and methods for dealing with them. 25 years have passed and, while the engineering principles covered by the FIP report remain unchanged, the context has evolved: - External tendons and construction methods have kept evolving with better materials, ever longer spans, and tighter schedules. - Normalization frame in Europe changed, Severe durability issues have occurred in some countries from which the industry can extract good knowledge of the causes and how to avoid similar problems in the future. This new fib bulletin has been prepared with the aim to reflect the current state of the art and encompass the knowledge amassed in the last quarter of century with chapters covering from the design and approval of systems and materials to installation, quality control and monitoring. The last chapter is a compilation of structures worldwide covering all sorts of materials, typologies and construction methods, which might be a source of inspiration for owners and designers alike.
