Download or read book Law and Time written by Sian Beynon-Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on law's relationship with time has flourished over the past decade. This edited collection aims to put law and time scholarship into wider context, advancing conversations on time and temporalities between socio-legal scholars, anthropologists, sociologists, geographers and historians. Through a diverse range of contributions, the collection explores how legal modalities of time emerge and have effects within wider clusters of social and political action. Themes include: law’s diverse roles in maintaining linear historicist models of time; law’s participation in the materialisation of times; and the unsteady effects of temporal pluralism and polytemporalities in law. De-naturalising the ‘time’ in law and time scholarship, this collection positions time as something that can be enacted and materialised as well as experienced, with distinct implications for questions of social justice. Book Synopsis Epidemiology of Electromagnetic Fields by : Martin Roosli
Download or read book Epidemiology of Electromagnetic Fields written by Martin Roosli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appeals to a Wide Audience Fueled by more than 30 years of intensive research and debate on the impact of electromagnetic fields (EMF) on everyday life—starting with residential exposure to magnetic fields and the development of childhood cancer in the 70s and continuing with risk of exposure via wireless communications in present day—Epidemiology of Electromagnetic Fields addresses ongoing public and scientific controversy surrounding the possible effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) to human health, and provides an in-depth introduction into the methodology of environmental epidemiology that is appropriate for all levels, from student to practicing engineer. Exposure to EMF Focusing primarily on EMF examples, the author presents the general principles and methodological concepts in environmental epidemiology. Topics of importance in the first part of the book include epidemiological study designs, exposure assessment methods and implications for the study results, as well as selection bias, confounding, and other biases including reverse causality and ecological fallacy. The second part of the book covers environmental epidemiological methods in detail and outlines key examples such as childhood leukemia and exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields, as well as examples that look at brain tumors and mobile phone use. The book also offers a detailed discussion on the range of EMF sources and exposures. In addition, it highlights the sophisticated assessment methods required to address exposure situations, and provides a historical perspective. The third part of the book examines how EMF exposure from the use of wireless communication techniques and other challenges affect risk assessment today and also details future developments. Explores environmental epidemiological methods in detail, while critically discussing epidemiological findings Provides a state-of-the-art overview of the scientific evidence of the health effects of EMF Considers how novelty, the steep increase of radiofrequency (RF) EMF exposure from wireless communications, and other challenges affect risk assessment today Epidemiology of Electromagnetic Fields provides a thorough overview of the subject, and evaluates the scientific evidence surrounding the possible health effects of EMFs.
Book Synopsis Sleep Medicine and the Evolution of Contemporary Sleep Pharmacotherapy by : Denis Larrivee
Download or read book Sleep Medicine and the Evolution of Contemporary Sleep Pharmacotherapy written by Denis Larrivee and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sleep is a fundamental physiological feature experienced by all known mammalian, and most non-mammalian, species. Underscoring its importance is the wide array of neural and cellular processes that have evolved to govern when and how it occurs, its duration, sequence of phases, and the influence it exerts on numerous other brain functions. This book takes up the growing prevalence of sleep disorders affecting these processes and the panorama of pharmaceutical tools that have evolved for their medical care. Its wide-ranging discussion promises not only recent updates on their clinical management but a contemporary window into sleep’s cross-cutting relevance for the many neurological dysfunctions now known to associate with sleep disturbances.
Book Synopsis Is Local Beautiful? by : Sara Hellmüller
Download or read book Is Local Beautiful? written by Sara Hellmüller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the swisspeace annual conference 2012, the publication examines the delicate balance between external interventions and locally-led initiatives. It addresses the question of what “local” means in the peacebuilding and development context; which actors on the ground actually represent the local level and how external actors choose their partners from amongst them. Moreover, it examines how local ownership - emerging as key criteria for any external intervention - is constituted: does this concept only imply local participation or is local control from the outset a must? Finally, it assesses the potential of locally-led initiatives and local conflict resolution mechanisms and their interaction with external interventions. Several authors provide insights on these questions and nuance our thinking about both local ownership and external interventions. As such, the publication aims to encourage critical reflections on this topical debate in peacebuilding and development.
Book Synopsis Evidential Legal Reasoning by : Jordi Ferrer Beltrán
Download or read book Evidential Legal Reasoning written by Jordi Ferrer Beltrán and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a transnational perspective of evidentiary problems, drawing on insights from different systems and legal traditions. It avoids the isolated manner of analyzing evidence and proof within each Common Law and Civil Law tradition. Instead, it features contributions from leading authors in the evidentiary field from a variety of jurisdictions and offers an overview of essential topics that are of both theoretical and practical interest. The collection examines evidence not only as a transnational field, but in a cross-disciplinary context. Each chapter engages with the interdisciplinary themes cutting through the issues discussed, benefiting from the expertise and experience of their diverse authors.
Book Synopsis Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equations by : Michael Griebel
Download or read book Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equations written by Michael Griebel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meshfree methods for the solution of partial differential equations gained much attention in recent years, not only in the engineering but also in the mathematics community. One of the reasons for this development is the fact that meshfree discretizations and particle models are often better suited to cope with geometric changes of the domain of interest, e.g. free surfaces and large deformations, than classical discretization techniques such as finite differences, finite elements or finite volumes. Another obvious advantage of meshfree discretizations is their independence of a mesh so that the costs of mesh generation are eliminated. Also, the treatment of time-dependent PDEs from a Lagrangian point of view and the coupling of particle models and continuous models gained enormous interest in recent years from a theoretical as well as from a practial point of view. This volume consists of articles which address the different meshfree methods (SPH, PUM, GFEM, EFGM, RKPM etc.) and their application in applied mathematics, physics and engineering.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge Handbook of Copyright Limitations and Exceptions by : Shyamkrishna Balganesh
Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Copyright Limitations and Exceptions written by Shyamkrishna Balganesh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While copyright law is ordinarily thought to consist primarily of exclusive rights, the regime's various exemptions and immunities from liability for copyright infringement form an integral part of its functioning, and serve to balance copyright's grant of a private benefit to authors/creators with the broader public interest. With contributors from all over the world, this handbook offers a systematic, thorough study of copyright limitations and exceptions adopted in major jurisdictions, including the United States, the European Union, and China. In addition to providing justifications for these limitations, the chapters compare differences and similarities that exist in major jurisdictions and offer suggestions about how to improve the enforcement of copyright limitations domestically and globally. This work should appeal to scholars, policymakers, attorneys, teachers, judges, and students with an interest in the theories, policies, and doctrines of copyright law.
