Book Synopsis Biophysical control of microfibril orientation in plant cell walls by : J.D. Boyd
Download or read book Biophysical control of microfibril orientation in plant cell walls written by J.D. Boyd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the extreme diversity of aquatic and terrestrial plant genera, each has characteristic cell wall forms. A number of hypotheses have been advanced to explain differences in microfibril arrangements across anyone such wall. Of those, only the 'multinet' theory, which involves the postulation of reorientation of microfibrils caused by cell extension, now has a substantial number of ad herents. However, many scientists are sceptical of its validity; obviously it is incompatible with various observed microfibril arrangements. The tenet of this study is that any such hypothesis can be valid only if it is applicable to all plant forms and wall types. Initially, reanalyses are made of data claimed to confirm justification for multi net postulations. The results show that previous deductions from those data, in support of multinet, are subject to serious challenge. Similarly, a re-examination of the observations, which inspired the multinet theory, shows they have a more logical explanation. Herein, it is concluded that cell wall development involves biophysical factors, which neces sarily prevent multinet's postulated large reorientations of microfibrils, after their formation. Unfortunately the previously most recent published theory, which is based on the absence of reorientation during extension, fails to answer the fundamental question of how alternating orientations between lamellae are controlled, or explain variations in thickness of wall layers. Extensive published data are used to identify forces involved in cell wall development.
Book Synopsis Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities by : National Research Council
Download or read book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-08-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their inception in 1862, the U.S. land grant colleges have evolved to become the training ground for the nation's and the world's agriculturists. In this book, the committee examines the future of the colleges of agriculture in light of changing national priorities for the agricultural, food, and natural resource system. The effects of federal funding constraints also are examined, as are opportunities for growth presented by developments in science. The committee's preceding volume, Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities: A Profile, is a compilation of the data that helped formulate the specific questions to be addressed. Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Univerisities: Public Service and Public Policy is the deliberative report, rating conclusions and recommendations for institutional innovation and public policy. It addresses these and other questions: What education mission should colleges of agriculture adoptâ€"and what strategies should they useâ€"in light of significant changes in the agricultural complex? Research in agriculture is expected to respond to consumer demands, environmental concerns, world population growth, and increasing pressure on agricultural lands. Is the century-old structure of land grant university-based research up to the task? What is the role of extension in light of today's smaller farming communities and larger farming conglomerates? This volume is the culmination of a landmark evaluation of land grant colleges of agriculture, an American institution. This document will be of value to policymakers, administrators, and others involved in agricultural science and education.

Book Synopsis Guangdong and Chinese Diaspora by : Yow Cheun Hoe
Download or read book Guangdong and Chinese Diaspora written by Yow Cheun Hoe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s rapid economic growth has drawn attention to the Chinese diasporic communities and the multiple networks that link Chinese individuals and organizations throughout the world. Ethnic Chinese have done very well economically, and the role of the Chinese Diaspora in China’s economic success has created a myth that their relations with China is natural and primordial, and that regardless of their base outside China and generation of migration, the Chinese Diaspora are inclined to participate enthusiastically in China’s social and economic agendas. This book seeks to dispel such a myth. By focusing on Guangdong, the largest ancestral and native homeland, it argues that not all Chinese diasporic communities are the same in terms of mentality and orientation, and that their connections to the ancestral homeland vary from one community to another. Taking the two Cantonese-speaking localities of Panyu and Xinyi, Yow Cheun Hoe examines the hierarchy of power and politics of these two localities in terms of their diasporic kinsfolk in Singapore and Malaysia, in comparison with their counterparts in North America and Hong Kong. The book reveals that, particularly in China’s reform era since 1978, the arguably primordial sentiment and kinship are less than crucial in determining the content and magnitude of linkages between China and the overseas Chinese. Rather, it suggests that since 1978 business calculation and economic rationale are some of the key motivating factors in determining the destination and degree of diasporic engagement. Examining various forms of Chinese diasporic engagement with China, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese Diaspora, Chinese culture and society, Southeast Asian culture and society and ethnicity.

Book Synopsis Farm Management In Peasant Agriculture by : Michael Collinson
Download or read book Farm Management In Peasant Agriculture written by Michael Collinson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1972, Farm Management in Peasant Agriculture remains the only detailed discussion of on-site research techniques for economists working on the development of small-holder agriculture in Africa. Part 1 describes the conditions of the agricultural sector within which the African peasant farmer must operate, and then outlines an approach to farm management tailored to those conditions. Part 2 sets out the research planning and investigation tasks implied by the approach. Survey techniques, as well as the value of a pre-survey for understanding general attributes of a farm system, are reviewed, and alternative data-collection methods are elaborated. Part 3 shows how research data can be used in planning content for extension programs. Dr. Collinson concludes with the details of a planning method that interpolates changes in farm practice into a model of the existing farm system and that projects a sequence of changes, representing a sequence of extension content, on the basis of farmer acceptability.
