However, even if implemented as designed, current policy will get the United States only part of the way to its net-zero goal. Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States provides a comprehensive set of actionable recommendations to help policymakers achieve a just and equitable energy transition over the next decade and beyond, including policy, technology, and societal dimensions. This report addresses federal and subnational policy needs to overcome implementation barriers and gaps with a focus on energy justice, workforce development, public health, and public engagement. The report also presents a suite of recommendations for the electricity, transportation, built environment, industrial, fossil fuels, land use, and finance sectors.

Development of integrated modeling approaches for complex energy systems will be essential for deployment. Success requires developments in optimization and control theory, complemented by machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), all of which in turn need targeted investments in breadth and scale of computing. This document defines an opportunity space where: embracing computing can link established research and development (R&D) to a decarbonization agenda; pursuing emerging approaches can accelerate the pace of technology advancement across the portfolio; and leading by example could reduce the carbon footprint of computing worldwide.

Book excerpt: This presentation gives a high-level overview of the recently published demand-side grid (dsgrid) model documentation. The general modeling philosophy and technical approach of dsgrid is described, as is an initial data set covering 2012 contiguous United States (CONUS) electricity demand. The initial data set describes about 80% of electrical load at an hourly level by county, subsector and end use. Coarser models and data sets are used to describe the remainder. Model residuals are calculated at different levels of aggregation by leveraging historical electricity sector data and a model of 2012 distributed generation. Overall, the dsgrid model has been developed to support analysis of future load scenarios, including interactive effects between energy efficiency, electrification, demand response, renewable energy, battery energy (or other forms of) storage, and future grid conditions broadly construed. Planned future work includes the development of future load scenarios and physically realistic estimates of the flexible load resource.
