Book Synopsis Rendre possible un autre monde by : Jean-François Draperi
Download or read book Rendre possible un autre monde written by Jean-François Draperi and published by Presses de l'Economie sociale. This book was released on 2005 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Party's Over by : Richard Heinberg
Download or read book The Party's Over written by Richard Heinberg and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is about to run out of cheap oil and change dramatically. Within the next few years, global production will peak. Thereafter, even if industrial societies begin to switch to alternative energy sources, they will have less net energy each year to do all the work essential to the survival of complex societies. We are entering a new era, as different from the industrial era as the latter was from medieval times. In The Party's Over , Richard Heinberg places this momentous transition in historical context, showing how industrialism arose from the harnessing of fossil fuels, how competition to control access to oil shaped the geopolitics of the 20th century, and how contention for dwindling energy resources in the 21st century will lead to resource wars in the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America. He describes the likely impacts of oil depletion, and all of the energy alternatives. Predicting chaos unless the U.S. -- the world's foremost oil consumer -- is willing to join with other countries to implement a global program of resource conservation and sharing, he also recommends a "managed collapse" that might make way for a slower-paced, low-energy, sustainable society in the future. More readable than other accounts of this issue, with fuller discussion of the context, social implications, and recommendations for personal, community, national, and global action, Heinberg's updated book is a riveting wake-up call for humankind as the oil era winds down, and a critical tool for understanding and influencing current U.S. foreign policy. Book Synopsis The Italian Economy by : Vera Zamagni
Download or read book The Italian Economy written by Vera Zamagni and published by World Economies. This book was released on 2018 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacies of two great civilizations--the Roman Empire and Renaissance city-states--are still apparent in today's Italian economy in its internationalization, strong regional cultures, tourism, and arts industries. Less appreciated is the country's status as continental Europe's second-largest industrial power, notwithstanding the disproportionate significance of SMEs in Italy. Vera Zamagni's survey of the Italian economy and its modern history outlines its unique shape and structure and how human factors explain its strengths in social networks, "niche capitalism," and well-being indicators, as well as its weaknesses reflected in regional imbalances, political instability, and recently in banking. Focusing on economic developments since 1945, Zamagni explains how the contemporary economy is the result of the contours of this longer history, of the country's geography--low on natural resources but blessed with good weather and shipping opportunities--and more recent factors such as the country's membership in the EU and the changing profile of Italian demography and the country's surprisingly measured response to the challenges of migration. Drawing upon both conventional and heterodox approaches, the book concludes with an assessment of the prospects for the Italian economy. The book provides a concise overview of value for students in politics, political economy, history, and economics and for professionals looking to understand the nature of recent Italian economic performance.

Book excerpt: This volume discusses the many recent significant developments, and identifies important problems, in the field of social indicators. In the last ten years the methodology of multivariate analysis and synthetic indicators construction significantly developed. This volume focuses on these recent developments in synthesizing indicators, and more generally, in quantifying complex phenomena.
Book Synopsis Identity and Cultural Diversity by : Maykel Verkuyten
Download or read book Identity and Cultural Diversity written by Maykel Verkuyten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity and Cultural Diversity examines immigration and its effect on diversity from a social psychological perspective. Immigration increases cultural diversity and raises difficult questions of belonging, adaptation, and the unity of societies: questions of identity may be felt by people struggling with the basic problem of who they are and where they fit in, and although cultural diversity can enrich communities and societies it also sometimes leads to a new tribalism, which threatens democracy and social cohesion. The author Maykel Verkuyten considers how people give meaning to the fact that they belong to ethnic, racial, religious and national groups, and the implications this can have for social cohesion. The opening chapters consider the nature of social identity and group identification, and include discussions of identity development in adolescence, acculturation, and multiple and dual identities. Verkuyten then considers one of the most pernicious social problems: how conflict emerges from perceiving others as different. He examines when and why group distinctions grow into conflicts and considers the role of cultural diversity beliefs, such as multiculturalism and assimilation. The book concludes by exploring productive ways of managing cultural diversity. Written in an engaging style, Identity and Cultural Diversity will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of social and cultural psychology and other social sciences, and it also makes key themes in social psychology accessible to a wider audience outside academia.

Book Synopsis Why Architects Still Draw by : Paolo Belardi
Download or read book Why Architects Still Draw written by Paolo Belardi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An architect's defense of drawing as a way of thinking, even in an age of electronic media. Why would an architect reach for a pencil when drawing software and AutoCAD are a click away? Use a ruler when 3D-scanners and GPS devices are close at hand? In Why Architects Still Draw, Paolo Belardi offers an elegant and ardent defense of drawing by hand as a way of thinking. Belardi is no Luddite; he doesn't urge architects to give up digital devices for watercolors and a measuring tape. Rather, he makes a case for drawing as the interface between the idea and the work itself. A drawing, Belardi argues, holds within it the entire final design. It is the paradox of the acorn: a project emerges from a drawing—even from a sketch, rough and inchoate—just as an oak tree emerges from an acorn. Citing examples not just from architecture but also from literature, chemistry, music, archaeology, and art, Belardi shows how drawing is not a passive recording but a moment of invention pregnant with creative possibilities. Moving from the sketch to the survey, Belardi explores the meaning of measurement in a digital era. A survey of a site should go beyond width, height, and depth; it must include two more dimensions: history and culture. Belardi shows the sterility of techniques that value metric exactitude over cultural appropriateness, arguing for an “informed drawing” that takes into consideration more than meters or feet, stone or steel. Even in the age of electronic media, Belardi writes, drawing can maintain its role as a cornerstone of architecture.
Book Synopsis Evidence-Based Public Health by : Ross C. Brownson
Download or read book Evidence-Based Public Health written by Ross C. Brownson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are at least three ways in which a public health program or policy may not reach stated goals for success: 1) Choosing an intervention approach whose effectiveness is not established in the scientific literature; 2) Selecting a potentially effective program or policy yet achieving only weak, incomplete implementation or "reach," thereby failing to attain objectives; 3) Conducting an inadequate or incorrect evaluation that results in a lack of generalizable knowledge on the effectiveness of a program or policy; and 4) Paying inadequate attention to adapting an intervention to the population and context of interest To enhance evidence-based practice, this book addresses all four possibilities and attempts to provide practical guidance on how to choose, carry out, and evaluate evidence-based programs and policies in public health settings. It also begins to address a fifth, overarching need for a highly trained public health workforce. This book deals not only with finding and using scientific evidence, but also with implementation and evaluation of interventions that generate new evidence on effectiveness. Because all these topics are broad and require multi-disciplinary skills and perspectives, each chapter covers the basic issues and provides multiple examples to illustrate important concepts. In addition, each chapter provides links to the diverse literature and selected websites for readers wanting more detailed information. An indispensable volume for professionals, students, and researchers in the public health sciences and preventative medicine, this new and updated edition of Evidence-Based Public Health aims to bridge research and evidence with policies and the practice of public health.
