Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to develop methods for rapidly and economically increasing the capacity of complete retention and/or intermittently discharging wastewater stabilization lagoons located at Corps of Engineers recreational sites through in situ application of chemical coagulating agents. Alum was chosen as the coagulant in this study because it is relatively inexpensive and readily available. Application and mixing techniques were optimized using a 14-ft boat and small outboard motor. Analyses were performed to determine treatment efficiencies for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids, total phosphates and orthophosphates. Algae enumerations were also performed. The study took place over an entire year with three coagulant applications performed to study the long-term effects of in situ alum addition. In situ alum addition consistently produced effluents with phosphate concentrations below 1.0 mg/alum. Removal rates for BOD and COD were approximately 80 percent with suspended solids being removed at rates as high as 95 percent. Algae removal rates were as high as 95 percent. No adverse effects were seen in either lagoon performance or in spraying the effluents on vegetation as a result of alum addition. Sludge accumulations of 0.1 to 0.2 in. per chemical application were measured. Repeated applications of alum did not result in significant increases in the sludge thickness, and no long-term adverse effect on lagoon performance is expected.

Book excerpt: The Logan City Environmental Department operates a facility that consists of 460 acres of fairly shallow lagoons (~ 5'deep) for biological wastewater treatment that meets targets for primary and secondary treatments (solids, biological oxygen demand (BOD), and pathogen removal). Significant natural algal growth occurs in these lagoons, which improves BOD removal through oxygenation and also facilitates N removal through volatilization as ammonia under high pH conditions created by algal growth. Phosphorus, however, is non-volatile and stays in the water and likely cycles in and out of algal cells as they grow and die in the lagoons. In the near future, the regulatory limits on phosphorus released from the Logan wastewater treatment facility are likely to become significantly lower to counter potential downstream eutrophication. One way to potentially lower phosphorus levels in the wastewater effluent is through management of algal growth in the lagoons. As mentioned above, algae growth naturally occurs in the treatment lagoons and if the algal biomass is harvested when growth yields are highest, the phosphorus contained in the cells could be removed to obtain phosphorus-free water. The algal biomass could then be used for production of biofuels. This research focuses on laboratory and pilot assessments to show the ability of algae indigenous to the Logan lagoons to uptake phosphorus and produce biomass that can be used for biofuel production.

Book excerpt: Excessive nitrogen and phosphorus loading from municipal wastewater treatment plants is an ongoing threat to water quality, which leads to more stringent environmental regulations in different countries. Microalgal mediated twin-layer system offers an interesting alternative for nitrogen and phosphorus removal since it provides a treatment to remove both nutrients efficiently coupled with the production of potentially valuable biomass. In the twin-layer system, microalgae are immobilized by self-adhesion on a wet, microporous, ultrathin substrate (the substrate layer). Subtending the substrate layer, a second layer, consisting of a macroporous fibrous material (the source layer), provides the growth medium. Twin-layer effectively separate microalgae from the bulk of their growth medium, yet allow diffusion of nutrients. Nylon filter cloth and glass grid reinforced lamina were selected as the suitable substrate and source layer for twin-layer system, respectively. Immobilized green algae Scenedesmus rubescens and Chlamydomonas terricola showed highest biomass productivities among 23 algae supplied by synthetic secondary wastewater and were recommended for wastewater treatment in general. Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the real municipal wastewater by S. rubescens was investigated. During 54 days, S. rubescens grew well (1.05 g dry weight m-2 day-1), remained immobilized and removed phosphorus, nitrate and ammonium efficiently from four types of wastewater within short retention time (1-2 days), e.g. the residual phosphate-P was

Book excerpt: This research evaluated dissolved air flotation (DAF) as a separation method for algae and phosphorus from municipal wastewater at the City of Logan, Utah Wastewater Reclamation Facility. DAF uses the supersaturation of air to raise suspended algae and other particles to the surface, where they can be easily removed. DAF, in conjunction with chemical coagulants and flocculants, can approach 95% algae and phosphorus removal. The algae removed using the DAF process will be used in the production of biofuels and bioplastics. A pilot DAF unit was used to determine the optimum alum dose for total phosphorus (TP) and algae removal. In addition, a bench-scale jar test unit was used to study the effects of various alum and polymer doses on removal efficiencies at different times of the day. An optimal alum dose was found to be 30 mg/L based on results from both the pilot and bench-scale units. No advantage to adding polymer was found. Algae removal efficiencies on the pilot DAF ranged from 68-70%, and the effluent algae concentration was reduced to 10 mg/L. Approximately 65% of the total phosphorus was removed, from 1.1 to 0.4 mg/L, which is low enough to meet regulations anticipated to be promulgated by the state of Utah. Using the assumption that the molar weight of algae is 3,550 g/mole, the molar ratio of Al/TSS was found to be 30.1 and the molar ratio of Al/TP was found to be 7.5. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) excreted by algal cells act as a natural flocculant and may allow for chemical usage to be minimized. Autoflocculation and bioflocculation, natural processes caused by EPS production and an increased pH level, were not observed to be a significant factor. The chemical dosing rates provide the City of Logan with basic operational parameters for a full-scale (15 million gallons per day) DAF plant, providing an effluent phosphorus level below 0.5 mg/L. The alum will cost $1,118 per day, with a daily electrical cost of approximately $149. This full-scale DAF plant would harvest 1,563 kg of algal biomass per day, with a cost per kilogram of algae at $0.81.

Book excerpt: Increasingly strict nutrient regulations propel the need to develop more sustainable methods to remove nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from wastewater. Algae show promise in their ability to uptake P. The purpose of this research was to propose an ANOA system (ANoxic, Oxic, Algae), testing a bench scale modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) system coupled with an algaebased continuous stir tank reactor (algae CSTR). The system was tested for its P treatment efficacy, focusing on the performance of the algae CSTR. The algae system could uptake up to 55% of P at the influent concentration of 6 mg/L. However, the presence of large flocs of bacteria in the algae CSTR resulted in a decrease and eventually a ceasing of P uptake. Phosphorus adsorption and uptake resulted in the algal biomass containing P at about 6% of the total biomass dry weight. Based on cellular P distribution with about 90% extracellular (physic-chemical sorbed) and 10% intracellular P (biological uptake) by using an oxalic acid rinse reagent, P removal in algae CSTR was mainly attributed to physical/chemical processes including P adsorption and coprecipitation with cations at relatively high pH environment due to algal growth.
