Discharge of these metals to surface waters inhabited by sensitive aquatic species including threatened and endangered salmonids has necessitated the need for improved treatment techniques. Although copper is of the greater toxicological concern, zinc is often present at concentrations several times higher than copper and may compete with copper during adsorptive treatment processes. In the current study, the ability biogenic fish-bone based alternative adsorbent, Apatite IITM, for copper and zinc removal from synthetic stormwater runoff was evaluated. Batch experiments were employed to examine equilibrium removal and rapid small scale column tests (RSSCT) were used to simulate dynamic operation in continuous systems. In both batch and continuous systems, the release of phosphate and calcium were observed, and Apatite IITM achieved high removal efficiencies. The removal of copper and zinc was likely due to a combination of processes including adsorption, ion exchange and precipitation. Precipitation played a dominant role in copper removal and the release of phosphate and pH buffering appear to drive this process. While precipitation was also quite important for zinc removal, adsorptive removal also played a role. The findings from the current study provide a general understanding of the performance of copper and zinc removal from stormwater runoff using Apatite IITM.

Book excerpt: This project was about removing heavy metal, Pb and Zn using activated carbon and to investigate the effect of activated carbon dosage and pH of heavy metal solution during the experiment. In the experiment, the effect of different particle size of activated carbon also being studied. The experiment was using different doses of activated carbon to investigate the removal of heavy metal. It was carried by adding different doses of activated carbon to stock solution. Besides, it was also tested at different value of pH, which was done by adding an amount of activated carbon that gives the best performance into different pH of stock solution to get the maximum heavy metal removal. The powdered and granular activated carbon (GAC) used to see the different effect. To get the maximum effect, the solution was well mixed using the orbital shaker for 1 hour at 30oC. Samples were taken after it mixed and analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). From the result, pH 10 gives the highest removal percentage of the heavy metal which is 92.8% for zinc ion and 93.36% for plumbum ion. From the result also, the removal percentage of heavy metal ion was highest when 5g of activated carbon was added to both simulated waste water. The removal percentage was 47.2% for zinc ion and 62.68% for plumbum ion. The result also shows that the powdered activated carbon (PAC) can increase the percentage of heavy metal ion removal compare to GAC. The removal percentage was 95.2% when the PAC was used while 53.74% for GAC. As conclusion, we know that activated carbon dosage and pH totally influence the removal of heavy metal ion.-Author.

Book excerpt: Low concentrations of dissolved copper have proven to be harmful to a number of aquatic organisms, with recent research highlighting detrimental effects to endangered salmonid species. Stormwater runoff can represent a significant source of copper to surface waters, necessitating cost-effective alternatives to current stormwater best management practices (BMPs). This study examines the potential efficacy of copper removal from stormwater runoff using compost, a current choice in many stormwater BMPs, and Apatite II, a biogenically derived hydroxy calcium phosphate mineral. Batch, column, and field experiments were performed to assess the equilibrium and continuous copper removal capacity of Apatite II and compost, as well as to characterize the effect of natural organic matter (NOM) on removal processes. In both equilibrium and continuous flow scenarios, compost and Apatite II each exhibited high copper removal efficiency in synthetic stormwater solutions. The introduction of NOM inhibited copper removal for both media types due to Cu-NOM complexation, but removal efficiency remained relatively high. In field experiments where composite influent and effluent samples were taken for each runoff event, copper removal was less consistent and efficiencies were much lower than in laboratory experiments. However, effluent dissolved copper is thought to be comprised entirely of Cu-NOM complexes, indicating that the filter was effective at removing the more bioavailable forms of dissolved copper. Phosphate and nitrate leaching was an issue for compost, and phosphate leaching and release of previously removed copper is a concern for Apatite II. Due to these issues and superior performance by compost in laboratory testing, compost is viewed as the more promising adsorbent. However, additional monitoring of the potential for nutrient leaching should be performed before wide-scale application.

This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is commonly used in drinking water treatment plants to control taste and odor, and it is available to remove synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) that must be controlled to meet drinking water standards. The objective of this study was to show how the adsorptive properties of PAC could more effectively be used in both conventional and unconventional treatment processes to control organic compounds. A major finding of this study involved the competitive effect of natural organic matter (NOM) on the the adsorption of organic compounds on activated carbon. Isotherm data show that the adsorption capacity of a compound is highly dependent on the initial compound concentration due to the competition of NOM for adsorption sites on the surface of the carbon. The equilibrium carbon capacity at a certain aqueous concentration decreases with decreasing initial organic compound concentration in the isotherm test when the initial NOM concentration is constant. An easy-to-use method was developed in this study to determine the isotherm of an organic compound when present in natural water at any initial concentration. The method approximates the complex mixture of NOM as a single compound referred to as the equivalent background compound (EBC). The initial concentration and single solute isotherm constants of the EBC are solved for based on the NOM's competitive effect on the adsorption of the organic compound on activated carbon, and these data can be used to accurately predict the adsorption capacity for conditions of relevance in operating plants. The performance of PAC in a floc-blanket reactor (FBR) for the adsorption of TCP, NOM and trichloroethylene (TCE) from natural water was investigated. Laboratory and field data were collected. PAC residence times as high as 30 hrs can be achieved in the floc blanket under laboratory conditions. Comparison of the PAC adsorption capacity in the reactor to the equilibrium adsorption capacity of TCP, TCE, and NOM in central Illinois groundwater and surface water showed that full utilization of the adsorption capacity of the carbon can be achieved with such high residence times. However, the PAC performance has to be compared to an isotherm conducted with an initial SOC concentration comparable to the SOC concentration in the influent to the reactor. This is due to the finding of decreasing isotherm capacity with decreasing initial concentration.

Book excerpt: The kinetic and preliminary equilibrium experiments were conducted in batches and the data were fitted to the pseudo first order kinetic equation and Langmuir isotherm. The kinetic results showed suppression of MC-LR adsorption trend in presence of NOM for all PAC types, with wood and coconut shell based PACs showing the least and highest impact. Doubling of NOM concentration did not show a reduction of similar magnitude compared to introducing NOM in the water matrix, which could be due to saturation of mesopore adsorption sites. Between the two NOM types, the presence of Grand Lake St. Marys dissolve organic matter showed statistically significant reduction in MC-LR adsorption trend compared to the Suwanee river fulvic acid only for the bituminous coal based PAC. Differences in adsorption could be due to differences in the chemical composition of the two NOM types and their affinity to the specific PAC type.
