Book Synopsis Adsorption of Heavy Metals by Using Activated Carbon by : Mohamed El Zayat
Download or read book Adsorption of Heavy Metals by Using Activated Carbon written by Mohamed El Zayat and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Book, The utilization of agricultural waste to produce valuable products has been investigated to minimize serious public health risks from exposure to dangerous fumes that come from burning the agricultural wastes in open fields. In this study, activated carbon produced from cotton stalks was examined for the removal of target heavy metal contaminants from water and wastewater. Adsorption studies conducted in completely mixed batch reactors and continuous flow columns showed a good affinity of the produced activated carbon to remove heavy metals, namely lead, cadmium and copper from aqueous solutions compared to other commercial adsorbents. The highest adsorption capacity was for lead, followed by copper and then cadmium. Multicomponent metal adsorption experiments indicated a competition for the available surface sites. Adsorption capacities in the mixture were reduced from their single-solute values for all metals.

Book Synopsis Research Basins and Hydrological Planning by : R.Z. Xi
Download or read book Research Basins and Hydrological Planning written by R.Z. Xi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 20th century, water management focused on the local scale of interest. In the 21st century we will be facing changes in the quantity of our water cycle. The forces behind these new challenges are industrialisation, population growth and an insufficiently swift response to climatic change. The magnitude and distribution of global changes are not exactly predictable, because we live in an ever-changing environment and are faced with extreme and interacting processes, which all are not yet sufficiently understood. Therefore, to shoulder this task, hydrology should embrace more integrative and interdisciplinary approaches and achieve more flexibility in assessments and decisions. To better confront this challenge, catchment-related solutions are more important than local solutions, to satisfy the water demand of agriculture, ecosystems, industry and the private sector. It is wise to keep in mind that the environment has a "sustainable memory" and our knowledge about attenuation capacities and resilience of the environment is still low.
Book Synopsis Removal of Toxic Chromium from Wastewater by : Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan
Download or read book Removal of Toxic Chromium from Wastewater written by Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of heavy metals such as Cr(VI) in the aquatic environment and their harmful effects on living organisms has emerged as one of the most serious environmental concerns world-wide. This book reports the technical feasibility of coconut shell waste, a low cost material from local agricultural waste, as well as zeolite, an inexpensive natural material for treatment of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater. The book contains insightful and novel ideas on how solid waste, an unused resource available in large quantities from local coconut industries, is able to be chemically modified in such a way that it could be further used as a low cost material adsorbent to remove toxic Cr(VI) from contaminated wastewater, thus improving environmental protection in the aquatic environment.
Book Synopsis Heavy Metals Removal from Liquid Waste Using Granular Activated Carbon by : Muzher Mahdi Ibrahem AlDoury
Download or read book Heavy Metals Removal from Liquid Waste Using Granular Activated Carbon written by Muzher Mahdi Ibrahem AlDoury and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy metals represent an important source of environmental pollution. Oil and petrochemical industries produce considerable amounts of heavy metals that finds its way to water sources such as rivers, lakes, sea, and ground water in addition to soil . Biological treatment units are unable to remove these metals since they are non-biodegradable. Considerable attention had been given for the treatment of heavy metals in recent years. North oil refineries company in Baiji suffer from the presence of many heavy metals in the discharged wastewater from biological treatment unit. The concentration of many of these heavy metals concentrations exceed the allowable concentrations according to the Iraqi limits. The present work is a trial to treat Copper, Manganeze, and Zinc from a synthetic wastewater using activated carbon. The study proved that these metals can be removed completely. However the breakthrough and exhaustion times for Zinc are lower than that of Copper and Manganese. The study proved also that adsorption capacity is not a pure property of activated carbon, but it depends on the operating conditions and the type of adsorbent and adsorbate and their characteristics.

Book Synopsis Industrially Important Fungi for Sustainable Development by : Ahmed M. Abdel-Azeem
Download or read book Industrially Important Fungi for Sustainable Development written by Ahmed M. Abdel-Azeem and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi are an understudied, biotechnologically valuable group of organisms. Due to their immense range of habitats, and the consequent need to compete against a diverse array of other fungi, bacteria, and animals, fungi have developed numerous survival mechanisms. However, besides their major basic positive role in the cycling of minerals, organic matter and mobilizing insoluble nutrients, fungi have other beneficial impacts: they are considered good sources of food and active agents for a number of industrial processes involving fermentation mechanisms as in the bread, wine and beer industry. A number of fungi also produce biologically important metabolites such as enzymes, vitamins, antibiotics and several products of important pharmaceutical use; still others are involved in the production of single cell proteins. The economic value of these marked positive activities has been estimated as approximating to trillions of US dollars. The unique attributes of fungi thus herald great promise for their application in biotechnology and industry. Since ancient Egyptians mentioned in their medical prescriptions how they can use green molds in curing wounds as the obvious historical uses of penicillin, fungi can be grown with relative ease, making production at scale viable. The search for fungal biodiversity, and the construction of a living fungi collection, both have incredible economic potential in locating organisms with novel industrial uses that will lead to novel products. Fungi have provided the world with penicillin, lovastatin, and other globally significant medicines, and they remain an untapped resource with enormous industrial potential. Volume 1 of Industrially Important Fungi for Sustainable Development provides an overview to understanding fungal diversity from diverse habitats and their industrial application for future sustainability. It encompasses current advanced knowledge of fungal communities and their potential biotechnological applications in industry and allied sectors. The book will be useful to scientists, researchers, and students of microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture, molecular biology, and environmental biology.
Book Synopsis Performance Evaluation of Granular Activated Carbon System at Pantex by :
Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Granular Activated Carbon System at Pantex written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A granular activated carbon (GAC) system is now in operation at Pantex to treat groundwater from the perched aquifer that is contaminated with high explosives. The main chemicals of concern are RDX and HMX. The system consists of two GAC columns in series. Each column is charged with 10,000 pounds of Northwestern LB-830 GAC. At the design flow rate of 325 gpm, the hydraulic loading is 6.47 gpm/ft2, and the empty bed contact time is 8.2 minutes per column. Currently, the system is operating at less than 10% of its design flow rate, although flow rate increases are expected in the relatively near future. This study had several objectives: Estimate the service life of the GAC now in use at Pantex; Screen several GACs to provide a recommendation on the best GAC for use at Pantex when the current GAC is exhausted and is replaced; Determine the extent to which natural organic matter in the Pantex groundwater fouls GAC adsorption sites, thereby decreasing the adsorption capacity for high explosives; and Determine if computer simulation models could match the experimental results, thereby providing another tool to follow system performance.
