Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Yukon The following chapters relate to my experiences in the Yukon from the spring of 1898 until the autumn of 1909, comprising a period of over eleven consecutive years. The first three years were employed principally in mining in the Yukon district, but owing to a severe accident, which resulted in permanent lameness, I was obliged to abandon mining altogether. For the next two years I was confined to Dawson, but when my foot became rather stronger I moved to the Pelly River, a tributary of the Yukon, and re mained in the vicinity for about six years, where I gained my experience in fur and trapping. So many books have appeared on the Yukon and northern regions that the subject has possibly become rather hackneyed. At the same time, I became acquainted with incidents and methods of life in those regions which I have not seen printed in other volumes, and which to a few people may possibly be of some interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an engagingly personal account of the hardships, challenges, and rewards of a life lived wholly in the presence of God and at the service of the Alaskan people. In September 1935, Segundo Llorente, a wide-eyed twenty-eight-year-old Jesuit priest from Spain set foot in Alaska for the the first time. His memoirs are filled with all that he saw, endured, and enjoyed for forty years in Uncle Sam's "icebox," whether by dogsled in the 1930s or by plane and snowmobile in the 1970s. He prayed, worked, scolded, helped, and laughed with a practical wisdom that recalls the Ignatian spirituality in everyday life that also marks Father Walter Cisek's Russian journal, He Leadeth Me.

Book excerpt: Born in the small, northern community of Whitehorse, before the building of the Alaska Highway, Joyce Yardley's childhood was full of friends, family and, most of the time, fun. In Yukon Tears and Laughter, she shares memories of that time as well as other episodes in her life. From her years as a wife and mother, working with her family ranching, mining and even trapping for fur to finally pulling up roots after a lifetime of living in the Yukon, Joyce's reminiscences will appeal to readers of biographies and adventure, alike. Written in a spirited and genuine manner, the book details several journeys taken by Joyce and her husband Gordon during their retirement years. It also brings to light the hard times that follow as her husband's health fails and Joyce becomes his primary caregiver. Readers will be touched as she shares her feelings and writings about the times of her life.

Book excerpt: The popular image of the Klondike is of a rush of white, male adventurers who overcame great physical and geographical obstacles in their quest for gold. Young, white, single American men carried forward the ideals and structures of the western frontier. It was a man's world made respectable only after the turn of the century with the arrival of white, middle class women who miraculously swept out the corners of dirt and vice and 'civilized' the society. These impressions endure despite recent attempts to correct them. Gamblers and Dreamers tackles some of the myths about the history of the North in the era of the gold rush. Though many inhabitants came and went, Charlene Porsild focuses on the concept of community commitment to show that many put down roots. This in-depth study of Dawson City at the turn of the century reveals that the city had a cosmopolitan character, a stratified society, and a definite permanence. It examines the lives of First Nations peoples, miners and other labourers, professionals, merchants, dance hall performers and sex trade workers, providing fascinating detail about those who left homes and jobs to strike it rich in the last great gold rush of the nineteenth century. In the process, Gamblers and Dreamers puts a human face on this compelling period of history.

Patty reflects on a fifty-year career covering heroic, larger-than-life characters and the roles they played in the history of Alaska and the Yukon. Patty recounts the struggles of Alaska's Native people to win their rightful land claims, goes whaling with Eskimo friends, and flies with daring bush pilots--his boyhood heroes. This son of pioneer Alaskans also tells of a boy's life in rough-and-tumble gold camps along the Yukon River. He salutes women of the north country - unstoppable, he calls them, who mushed dog teams, survived the brutality of World War II in the Aleutian Islands, and made comfortable homes on a challenging frontier. He documents the Good Friday earthquake that jolted Alaska in 1964. He meets the one and only Klondike Kate, Charles A. Lindbergh, and other notables.
