When it was originally published in 1928, Luther Standing Bear’s autobiographical account of his tribe and tribesmen was hailed by Van Wyck Brooks as “one of the most engaging and veracious we have ever had.” It remains a landmark in Native American literature, among the first books about Native Americans written by a Native American. Born in the 1860s, the son of a Lakota chief, Standing Bear was in the first class at Carlisle Indian School, witnessed the Ghost Dance uprising from the Pine Ridge Reservation, toured Europe with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, and devoted his later years to the Native American rights movement of the 1920s and 1930s.

Book Synopsis Memories of the Dakota Sioux War, 1862 by : Oscar Garrett Wall
Download or read book Memories of the Dakota Sioux War, 1862 written by Oscar Garrett Wall and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2021-05-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian War fought during the American Civil War The Dakota Sioux War (also known as the Little Crow Uprising and Little Crow's War, named after the Sioux leader) raged briefly from August to December, 1862 along the Minnesota River. The native Americans had suffered the indignities and privations of broken treaties and promises which inevitably led to violence. It is recognised that Indian Agents were guilty of violations of the law including frauds. Farms and settlements were attacked, most notably at the Redwood Agency, Milford, Leavenworth and Sacred Heart. Fort Ridgely and the township of New Ulm were assaulted and military forces suffered a significant defeat at The Battle of Birch Coulee. Attacks on stagecoach stations, forts and settlements spread into Northern Minnesota before the Sioux were eventually defeated. Hundreds of settlers and soldiers had been killed. Reprisals were brutal including the mass execution of thirty-eight Sioux warriors. This book contains two accounts of those turbulent times. The second very short account has been included in this Leonaur edition since it was considered unlikely to be republished individually. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
Book Synopsis C. G. Jung and the Sioux Traditions by : Vine Deloria
Download or read book C. G. Jung and the Sioux Traditions written by Vine Deloria and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While visiting the United States, C. G. Jung visited the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico, where he spent several hours with Ochwiay Biano, Mountain Lake, an elder at the Pueblo. This encounter impacted Jung psychologically, emotionally, and intellectually, and had a sustained influence on his theories and understanding of the psyche. Dakota Sioux intellectual and political leader, Vine Deloria Jr., began a close study of the writings of C. G. Jung over two decades ago, but had long been struck by certain affinities and disjunctures between Jungian and Sioux Indian thought. He also noticed that many Jungians were often drawn to Native American traditions. This book, the result of Deloria's investigation of these affinities, is written as a measured comparison between the psychology of C. G. Jung and the philosophical and cultural traditions of the Sioux people. Deloria constructs a fascinating dialogue between the two systems that touches on cosmology, the family, relations with animals, visions, voices, and individuation.
Download or read book Rez Life written by David Treuer and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prize-winning writer offers “an affecting portrait of his childhood home, Leech Lake Indian Reservation, and his people, the Ojibwe” (The New York Times). A member of the Ojibwe of northern Minnesota, David Treuer grew up on Leech Lake Reservation, but was educated in mainstream America. Exploring crime and poverty, casinos and wealth, and the preservation of native language and culture, Rez Life is a strikingly original blend of history, memoir, and journalism, a must read for anyone interested in the Native American story. With authoritative research and reportage, he illuminates issues of sovereignty, treaty rights, and natural-resource conservation. He traces the policies that have disenfranchised and exploited Native Americans, exposing the tension that marks the historical relationship between the US government and the Native American population. Ultimately, through the eyes of students, teachers, government administrators, lawyers, and tribal court judges, he shows how casinos, tribal government, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs have transformed the landscape of modern Native American life. “Treuer’s account reads like a novel, brimming with characters, living and dead, who bring his tribe’s history to life.” —Booklist “Important in the way Dee Brown’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee was when it came out in 1970, deeply moving readers as it schooled them about Indian history in a way nothing else had.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune “[A] poignant, penetrating blend of memoir and history.” —People
