I was so occupied in business then that I could not find time to comply with their wishes. Now that I have had sufficient time I have carried out their request. With the help of some of my old comrades, I have undertaken to dig through the accumulated memories of fifty years and record incidents, - many of them commonplace enough to us then, but to which time has added a charm which warms our hearts to each other and to this dear land of ours. As a regiment the Ninth Ohio Cavalry, which belonged to the Army of the West, operated most of the time under general orders on its own responsibility. Often stationed quite in advance of the infantry, we were thus brought into close touch with the Southern people, and as a result dislikes on both sides were very much modified. The incidents here preserved are side-lights on its dark background but they helped in a small way to modify the bitterness of it all. Batteries of sandbags, armed with cannon, lined that part of the town ex posed to invasion from the bay, and there was much coming and going. Companies of young sol diers came down from the interior, and to my childish mind it seemed as though our part of the country was to be the seat of war. This was in the spring of 1861. My old est sister, Floride, was to be married early in the autumn, and mother wanted to go North to see her father and get my sister's trous seau. It was a hurried and hazardous trip, and she returned with much difficulty, being almost the last let through the lines. We were indeed glad to have her return safely, bringing the precious outfit. I feel sure noone else could have accomplished it, but she was a woman of indomitable will and courage. My sister's marriage took place soon after, and as I was one of the bridesmaids, war and all its consequences were naught to me for a while. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
