Unavailable since 1914, this publication offers rare, first hand insights into the settlement of the Old Oregon Country by G.W. Kennedy who was an Oregon Pioneer of 1853 Included in Kennedy's recollections are the daring tales of the early pioneers in the unsettled wilds of Oregon Territory as they crossed the continent for an Eden, settled the land, mined for gold, fought with Indians and built up their own civilization. These long lost stories will be of interest to modern gold miners, historians and others who are interested in the history of the Far West. Chapters include Around the Campfire With The Emigrants, Oregon Nomenclature, With The Settlers In The Log Cabin Homes, With The Hunters and The Miners, The Prospector and With The Preachers On The Trails. Note: This edition is a perfect facsimile of the original edition and is not set in a modern typeface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Oregon: Jottings of Personal Recollections of a Pioneer of 1850 During the month of October, 1850, there were fitted out in San Francisco three brigs, suitable for carrying passengers, which were advertised for sailing during that month to the mouth of the Umpqua river. No American vessel had ever entered that port before. The mines had been discovered in northern California, and a company had been organized in San Francisco to locate townsites on the Umpqua river. The townsite at the mouth of the river was called Umpqua City. Up the river at the head of navigation was Scottsburg; farther up, near the site of the post of the Hudson Bay Company, was Elkton, and still farther up, on the trail from Oregon to California, was Winchester. This route was intended to reach the northern California mines. Flaming hand-bills were posted showing the advantages of the route and advertising the cities as before named. Plats of these new cities were made out, and lots were offered for sale at public auction at real estate offices in San Francisco. Book excerpt: Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton Press Blazing a Wagon Trail to Oregon is the story of a determined group of American pioneers who set out to move their families on wheeled vehicles from the settled frontier in Missouri to the far Pacific shore. Their incentive was simple enough. Times were tough in 1843, and they had heard of a lush new land existing in a place called Oregon, a land ready to be settled by hard-working farmers. Although a new life seemed to await them just over the horizon, none of them suspected how formidable that horizon really was. Diaries, letters home, and later reminiscences tell their stories and document their emotional responses to their experiences. Beginning with the earliest assembly of wagons outside the frontier town of Independence, Missouri, the reader follows "this grand adventure" to its conclusion six months later in Oregon. By introducing the various participants through a weekly chronicle, the author enables readers to view these shared experiences from sometimes revealingly different angles of vision. In effect, readers themselves become vicarious members of the train.
