Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Busy Life: Including Reminiscences of American Politics and Politicians, From the Opening of the Missouri Contest to the Downfall of Slavery HE book herewith presented to the public is a collection of the series of articles originally published by mr. Gamer in the New York Ledger, hearing, as now, the ao curately descriptive title, recollections or A busy life. Revised, and in part rewritten, by the author, and enriched by the addition of much original matter, it is believed that these autobiographical reminiscences will be, not only enter taining and attractive to the casual reader, but of perma nent value to all students'ot' the times we live in. They form a record of the inner life and inspiration of one who has actively shared in the many strange intellectual and political phases through which America has gone during the past thirty years of intense vitality. Mb. Greeley himself gives the best indication of their nature: I shall never write anything else into which I shall put so much of myself, my experiences, notions, convictions, and modes of thought, as these Recollections. I give, with small reserve, my mental history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Incidents of a Long Life This work is given to the public at the earnest request of many of our most prominent ministers of the gospel, and a great multitude of lay members, amongst whom I have labored, either as pastor, or evangelist. Its preparation was commenced many years ago. A large portion of it was written some time before Rev. Dr. Jeter began the publication of his "Recollections of a Long Life," in the Religious Herald, of Richmond, Va. So that, although there may be some resemblance between his "Recollections," and my "Reminiscences," it must not be supposed that my book is a mere imitation of his. Its publication has been delayed to the present time, so that it might contain as nearly all of my life and labors as possible. I am now within a few weeks of seventy-nine years of age. I have been preaching the gospel fifty-nine years. And it is not likely that I will be able to perform much more public ministerial work. The incidents related in the book are mostly those that have fallen under my own observation. I trust they will be interesting and profitable to all who may read them. God has honored me greatly in my ministry; and many thousands have been led to Jesus for salvation, through my humble instrumentality. To his adorable name be all the glory! Amen. Townsend, as Written by Himself The author lays no claim to notoriety, or erudition, sufficient to attract the enlightened public of this age. But, having passed seventy-five years in this sinful but otherwise beautiful world and knowing that he must soon leave it, and some reminiscences in his life'be lost to posterity, and being persuaded to the arduous task by some - especially his old friend and blind editor, I. M. Dixon, of Des Moines, trusting that some humble follower of the Lord Jesus Christ might profit by his long experience in this world, as also his half-century experience in the Church to this end he has solemnly written this little volume. He has aimed to avoid personalities as much as circumstances would permit - so much so that some good stories are spoiled for the want of names. He has aimed to give facts, and let them stand for their worth in the estimation of an enlightened public. If, in any instance, he has erred, an intelligent and charitable public will attribute it to the want of recollection at this advanced age, rather than a disposition to vary from the truth. He claims to have the highest good of his fellow man in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Boutwell At the request of my daughter and my son and by the advice of my friends, the Honorable J. C. Bancroft Davis and the Honorable William A. Richardson, I am venturing upon the task of giving a sketch of my experiences in life during three fourths of a century. The wisdom of such an undertaking is not outside the realm of debate. A large part of my manhood has been spent in the politics of my native state, and in the politics of the country. For many years I have had the fortune to be associated with those in whose hands the chief powers were lodged. I have been a witness of, and in some cases an actor in, events that have changed the character of the institutions and affected the fortunes of the country. Those events and their consequences must in time disturb, if they do not change, the institutions of other countries. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: uzie King Taylor made a remarkable journey from slavery to freedom through service with the first black Civil War regiment to fight for freedom in America's history. Written toward the end of her life, her memories are not those of a battle veteran, though she helped care for plenty of shattered bodies, heard the guns, and saw rebel soldiers at close range. At risk to her life and freedom, she served throughout the war as a teenaged nurse. Assigned as a laundress, she actually did very little laundering but instead played an important role in the care and spirits of black soldiers and their white commanders. Her depth of feeling about the past and her passionate hopes for the future bring her writing to life. This is an important contribution to American history that is made available in this volume for the first time for e-readers. Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) was an African American army nurse with the first black Union troops during the Civil War. She wrote the only memoir of an African-American woman who had experience with combat troops. She was also the first African American to teach in a school for former slaves in Georgia. There is great beauty in some of the small details of Suzie King's recollections. She briefly ponders in amazement her ability to acclimate to the horrors of war. "It seems strange how our aversion to seeing suffering is overcome in war, how we are able to see the most sickening sights, such as men with their limbs blown off and mangled by the deadly shells, without a shudder; and instead of turning away, how we hurry to assist in alleviating their pain, bind up their wounds, and press the cool water to their parched lips, with feelings only of sympathy and pity." She also writes of her delight in becoming proficient at field-stripping, cleaning, and shooting a musket. Her final chapter is an eloquent plea for civil rights and a recognition that emancipation's promise was still a distant goal. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2021 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction Shortlisted for the 2021 Costa Biography Award The Sunday Times Best Book of the Year in Biography and Memoir A Financial Times Best Book of 2021 (Critics' Picks) The New Yorker, Best Books We Read in 2021 Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year 2021 A Guardian Best Book of the Year A reflection on "freedom" in a dramatic, beautifully written memoir of the end of Communism in the Balkans. For precocious 11-year-old Lea Ypi, Albania’s Soviet-style socialism held the promise of a preordained future, a guarantee of security among enthusiastic comrades. That is, until she found herself clinging to a stone statue of Joseph Stalin, newly beheaded by student protests. Communism had failed to deliver the promised utopia. One’s “biography”—class status and other associations long in the past—put strict boundaries around one’s individual future. When Lea’s parents spoke of relatives going to “university” or “graduating,” they were speaking of grave secrets Lea struggled to unveil. And when the early ’90s saw Albania and other Balkan countries exuberantly begin a transition to the “free market,” Western ideals of freedom delivered chaos: a dystopia of pyramid schemes, organized crime, and sex trafficking. With her elegant, intellectual, French-speaking grandmother; her radical-chic father; and her staunchly anti-socialist, Thatcherite mother to guide her through these disorienting times, Lea had a political education of the most colorful sort—here recounted with outstanding literary talent. Now one of the world’s most dynamic young political thinkers and a prominent leftist voice in the United Kingdom, Lea offers a fresh and invigorating perspective on the relation between the personal and the political, between values and identity, posing urgent questions about the cost of freedom.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Memories of My Life As the history of any period, in order to be of interest and value, must embrace not only its public events, but a great variety of social, industrial and political features illustrative of its life, it is of ad vantage to him who would write it to gather all the material of the latter kind within his reach when preparing his work. Even the reminiscences of one whose individual life contains nothing of value may be useful for such a purpose. I have written some of mine on that assumption, and not because they contain any unusual or impor tant facts, or literary merit. While there has been a large increase of biograph ical and auto-biographical writing of late years the previous lack of it in North Carolina has been keenly felt by all who have undertaken to preserve the story of her civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ecclesiastical Reminiscences of the United States The following sheets are intended to follow up the design of several recent, works on the same subject; the success of which, while it affords evidence of a growing interest amongst British Christians in whatever relates to the cause of catholicity in America, appears fully to warrant another contribution to the same subject. The author has made no effort to shape and adapt his narrative to any established model in the same department of authorship; nor is he prepared with any apology for the prominence which is given to himself - unavoidably in a journal embracing travels and scenes in public and domestic life, in the latter of which, it will be observed, he only appears as a "Spectator." That he has spoken favourably of the Americans as a people, arises from his long and intimate acquaintance with them; during which he has associated with almost every class in that community. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Public Men in Alabama for Thirty Years IT is deemed necessary to state, that the Author was requested by a number of friends who knew his long connection with the Government, to prepare Reminiscences of Public Men in Alabama, as a contribution to the history of the times, which could not fail to be of general interest. Prompted by this sug gestion, he ventured upon the task, believing that it was a duty he owed his fellow-citizens to lay before them the results of his observation and experience during a period which embraced the most distinguished actors on the public stage, and the most stirring events which have occurred since the State passed from its Terri torial condition. His memory has thus been exercised to gather up and preserve, in the form of narrative and description, many things which otherwise would have perished, as no man living, except himself, had the same opportunities to acquire, by personal contact with men, the minute knowledge embodied in this work. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, Republicans and Democrats who advocated conflicting visions of American citizenship could agree on one thing: the rhetorical power of Abraham Lincoln’s life. This volume examines the debates over his legacy and their impact on America’s future. In the thirty-five years following Lincoln’s assassination, acquaintances of Lincoln published their memories of him in newspapers, biographies, and edited collections in order to gain fame, promote partisan aims, champion his hardscrabble past and exalted rise, and define his legacy. Shawn Parry-Giles and David Kaufer explore how style, class, and character affected these reminiscences. They also analyze the ways people used these writings to reinforce their beliefs about citizenship and presidential leadership in the United States, with specific attention to the fissure between republicanism and democracy that still exists today. Their study employs rhetorical and corpus research methods to assess more than five hundred reminiscences. A novel look at how memories of Lincoln became an important form of political rhetoric, this book sheds light on how divergent schools of U.S. political thought came to recruit Lincoln as their standard-bearer.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography and Reminiscences of Theophilus Noel This volume is so different from any other you ever read, as all else I have done has been, and is different from the ordinary. To follow in the path and well beaten road, as others love to do, never had any charms for me. The ways of others have never been my ways; and that mine was popular is attested by the great number of thieves and imitators, counterfeiters and apes, who have sought to make - because I do - by following on my trail, as the hyena follows the trail of the lion, or the coyote that of the trapper and guide. It is to and from the criticism of the smart set, the educated apes and baboons, that I owe the greater part of my success in life, in all the many and varied paths and ways of my own blazing in new and unexplored lands and enterprises that have resulted in public benefaction. Egotism came to me with old age and from looking back ward and seeing the thousands of favored and educated ones I had deemed as being my superiors, left far in the rear in the race of life.
