Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Municipal Engineer A friend of mine, an engineer, told me that on his 21st birthday, his father, to whom he had been articled, took him into partnership. A few months later his father died, and, as is usual with engineers, there were one or two unsettled legal actions pending in which his father had been engaged as an expert witness. My friend had to give this evidence, and in his first case, under cross-examination he repeatedly said, "I was told this," "I am told that," until Counsel reproved him and said, "You must not say what you have been told, but what you know." At last the Judge intervened and said, "Mr. Blank, you must not say what you were told, but what you know as a fact." A little later, Counsel getting somewhat angry, said rather sharply, "How old are you, Mr. Blank?" Whereupon my friend replied, "I don't know." "Don't know your age, sir, what do you mean?" My friend promptly replied, "I am told I am twenty-one," and the laughter in Court smoothed matters over for the rest of his cross-examination. Thus I, in commencing these reminiscences, cannot say from memory of the occasion that I was born on January 15, 1846, but merely that I have been told so. There is, however, some documentary evidence of the fact contained in the certificate of my birth, a copy of which is in my possession, and also a reference to the event in The Times of January 19, 1846, which is as follows: - "On the 15th inst., the Lady of William Boulnois, Esquire, Abbey Road, St. John's Wood, of a son." This was the stilted language of those days, and I must conclude that the announcement referred to me and to no one else.
