Justin Perkins, D.D: Pioneer Missionary to Persia The object of this volume is to reflect the character and work of my honored father, the late Rev. Justin Perkins, D. D., pioneer missionary to Persia. This work is attempted in response to the desire of many friends in the United States, as well as in Persia. Friends of missions in England, Germany and elsewhere will be glad to renew their memories of the subject of this biography. Not long ago the Jubilee of the mission to Persia was observed. While there is cause of rejoicing over present results, a tribute to the memory of the earliest member of that mission becomes the more appropriate. It is my hope that the following chapters will serve to increase interest in the cause of missions, and especially as carried forward in Persia, where thirty-seven years of an earnest life were consecrated to the Master's service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Pioneer: Or a Brief Memoir of the Life, Labours, and Death of John Stewart, (Man of Colour, ) Founder, Under God of the Mission Among the Wyandotts at Upper Sandusky, Ohio It will be readily seen by the reader, that this little memoir is not intended as the pan egyric of its pious subject; but merely as a record of interestingincidents, in which he had a prominent agency. Eulogy on his vir tues is not needed; for Heaven has awarded him a more substantial and enduring inheri tance. And though on earth his lot was one of poverty, persecution, and extreme adversity; the patience and resignation of Christianity bore him above the waves. And though un marked by a stone, his ashes obscurely re pose 1n the wilderness, we doubt not, his vir tues and his name stands registered in the Lamb's Book of everlasting life. March, 1852, six Oblate Fathers and one Lay Brother, accompanied by four Nuns of the Incarnate Word, two Ursuline Sisters, four Brothers of Mary, and eighteen Seminarians, bade adieu to "La Belle France" and went aboard the sailing vessel "La Belle Assise," at Havre, en route for Texas. "My native land adieu! adieul I cannot always stay with you, stay with you." The wharf is crowded, thousands are there, in expectation of an unwonted spectacle. The saintly Bishop Odin, in his episcopal robes, blesses the band of missionaries from the pier and then goes back to Paris, in the interest of his diocese. The ship leaves its moorings, the cannon booms, the Ave Maris Stella is sung by thirty-five voices, "Adieu ma belle France." The sacrifice is made joyfully, "Hilarem datorem diligit Deus." Some sing, "Partons pour la Syrie." I saw tears trickling down the cheeks of a tender-hearted seminarian, as he cast a last glance on the coast of France disappearing on the horizon. "Adieu, mother." Fifty-two days between the immensity of the firmament and the immensity of the ocean taught us to appreciate the fixity of mother earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Missionaries of the Church The cordial reception which has been given in England, as well as America, to "Great Missionaries," which was issued several years ago, has led to the preparation of this volume. Since the noble men whose life story is briefly told in these twenty-six sketches were nearly all of them founders of missions, if not makers of empires, the title "Pioneer Missionaries" seems the only one which clearly defines the scope of the book. If the writer had been so inclined, the limits of space would have prevented any embellishment It has not been an easy task to compress the main features of the biography of a great man "of whom the world is not worthy" into a single chapter, when one longs for two or three hundred pages to tell the thrilling story of toil and sacrifice and triumph. Brief as are these sketches, it is hoped they may be found to give the leading facts in the career of each of these missionary heroes, and that not a few of those who read the book, especially among the students in our colleges, may be inspired "to follow in their train." Thornton Kelly Tyson, our Missionary, was one day visiting in our little frontier home, I suggested to him that his life-story should be written, as it would be a great blessing to the world. With a merry glint of the eye he said that his biography would read like an Indian song he once heard at an association. "The Indian sang," he continued, "in weird monotonous tones, and when the words of the song were interpreted they were like this: 'Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go.' "Now there were seven stanzas, and they were all exactly like this, so it will hardly be necessary for me to repeat them! That is the way with my life. In response to the Great Commission, I just 'Go-go-go-go-go.' There are several stanzas of it, but as they are all like the first it will not be interesting or profitable to repeat them." Once and again she importuned me to gather it together into a connected recital. When in 1889 we had settled upon having a summer cottage on Lake Michigan, I yielded to her request and began these "Reminiscences." I could give to them only my summer vacations. Pressing duties of life allowed me no other time. I finished them in 1904. I have only two motives in printing them. First, to accede to the wishes of one dear to me, whose desire I want all the more to comply with since she has been taken from my side. Second, to pen an honest record out from a tenderly grateful heart of how kind and good and helpful to a brother man were those who were wrong in belief and those who were wild and wicked in conduct of the men whom he knew and loved "in the mountains." The Rev. G.D. B. Miller has added to his life of faithful help to me the great kindness of supervising the printing and publishing of this volume. Book excerpt: The author of these memoirs, Chrysostom Verwyst, was an immigrant from North Brabant, Holland, who arrived in Boston in 1848 at the age of seven. His family had migrated with a group of fellow Catholics who had heard about the lands available in Wisconsin from a missionary priest returned home for a visit; however, the family was stranded in Boston without the funds to complete the trip. Almost half of Verwyst's narrative is taken up with the tale of how his family made its way to Hollandtown, Wisconsin, and carved a farm out of the woods and meadows of Brown County. These memoirs contain accounts of festive celebrations, costumes, agricultural practices, and local community life. Verwyst became a Catholic priest, attending seminary near Milwaukee during the Civil War. He served several Wisconsin communities during the second half of the nineteenth century: New London, Keshena, Hudson and environs, Seneca, Bayfield and La Pointe, Duluth and Superior. After joining the Franciscan order in 1883, Verwyst continued to attend communities in the Bayfield and Ashland areas. He also played a key role in establishing the Catholic Church as an active institutional presence in Washburn and Hurley. Following a three-year sojourn in St. Louis and Los Angeles, Verwyst returned to Ashland to attend missions in the Chippewa and St. Croix country. Finally, retiring to Bayfield, Verwyst spent his last years studying and composing works in the Chippewa language. The second part of his narrative examines not only his own life but the accomplishments of Catholic missionaries working among the diverse populations of northern Wisconsin.
