Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Boy in Blue 1862-1865 IT is worthy of note that the war for the preservation of the Union was conducted by the Government at Washington in accordance with the principles embodied in A Code of Instructions prepared specially for the occasion. This code was approved by the great-hearted Lincoln, and the armies and navies of the United States were guided by its principles in the prosecution of the war. That war was in its character a square stand-up fight in the open by men against men. Women and children were not hurt. Non-combatants were not wantonly molested. War prisoners were not mutilated. Lawlessness for its own sake was frowned on by Union officers. The seeds of hate were not wickedly sown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I missed the battle of Jonesville, being sick with typhoid fever. While I can't claim a discharge or parole, I would do the same again under similar circumstances, and would deem it no sin to violate an oath by taking up arms again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War When the war broke out I thought the country need ed my services but mother did not wish me to go to war because of my immature age. I was seventeen years old when father bade good-bye to mother and started for the southern conflict and I couldn't bear the thoughts of a well and able boy like me letting father go alone so I went with him. We enlisted as Privates in Company E., 58th Regi ment Massachusetts Volunteers, under Captain William E. Masim, and went into camp at Readville, near Boston. As I was not eighteen years of age, and as I had worked in the mill so long that I was pretty white I found it hard to pass all examinations. The doctor said no at first and had me put on the next train for Boston, but I was determined to go so I slipped out the back end of car and went to the Provo-marshal's office. I told him all about it, and how much I wanted to go with my father. I had to tell him what Company and Regiment father was in, and then he sent an orderly after the Captain. When he got there the doctor was sent for, and between them they passed me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Private In the summer of 1865 I first met Frank M. Mixson, the writer of these reminiscences. He was then a boy of eighteen summers, with four years of continuous service in the army of the Confederate States to his credit. In that depressing time, when the old civilization of the South had been prostrated by the cyclone of war, when every hope seemed forever gone from the sky of the darkened future, he was full of the steady, unflinching courage of the Confederate Veteran, looking with unwavering faith to the resurrection that loyalty to principle, trust in the right and confidence in the destiny of the Anglo-Saxon would assure in the peace of the patient coming years. Heroes of the Lost Cause were not then so scarce as now, and from time to time many of the older comrades of the boy soldier told me of his deeds of cool daring on the battle line, of mischievous life in the winter bound camps or on the weary march. And so the years passed, but they did not dim the memories of those who had touched elbows with him from Charleston to Appomattox. At my insist ant request, he, now graying with years, wrote for publication in my paper these reminiscences, as told by the winter fireside to the grandchildren gathered under his roof tree in the holiday time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forget-Me-Nots of the Civil War: A Romance, Containing Reminiscences and Original Letters of Two Confederate Soldiers Aunt Pallas, whom you will meet throughout the pages of this book, was a typical African in color, though her head was larger than the average negro, with the kinky hair growing low on her forehead, her eyes were very small, but lighted up by intelli gence. Her nose was large and flat, and most decidedly gave the appearance of a full-blooded native of Africa. Her mouth was large, with full lips even adding to her homeliness. Her shoulders were square, the body and hips with straight lines like a man's. Her limbs were muscular and her stature, though short, was as erect as a young Indian's. She claimed that she made herself so by carrying pails of water on her head when she was a child. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventy-Seven Years in Dixie: The Boys in Gray of '61-'65 When a few members of South Walton Three Arts Alliance decided to research and write a book about South Walton County, Florida, in 1996, we came across a book titled severity-seven Years in Dixie: The Boys of Gray of '61 '65. It was written by a local man, W. H. Reddick, and printed in 1910 by A. P. Bjorklund. The little gem, with its forty-eight pages bound by a bright red cover, measured 534 x about the size Of this book. Only a few American Civil War memoirs were written by Northwest Florida soldiers, so we were excited about its historical value and vowed to get it back in print. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: uzie King Taylor made a remarkable journey from slavery to freedom through service with the first black Civil War regiment to fight for freedom in America's history. Written toward the end of her life, her memories are not those of a battle veteran, though she helped care for plenty of shattered bodies, heard the guns, and saw rebel soldiers at close range. At risk to her life and freedom, she served throughout the war as a teenaged nurse. Assigned as a laundress, she actually did very little laundering but instead played an important role in the care and spirits of black soldiers and their white commanders. Her depth of feeling about the past and her passionate hopes for the future bring her writing to life. This is an important contribution to American history that is made available in this volume for the first time for e-readers. Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) was an African American army nurse with the first black Union troops during the Civil War. She wrote the only memoir of an African-American woman who had experience with combat troops. She was also the first African American to teach in a school for former slaves in Georgia. There is great beauty in some of the small details of Suzie King's recollections. She briefly ponders in amazement her ability to acclimate to the horrors of war. "It seems strange how our aversion to seeing suffering is overcome in war, how we are able to see the most sickening sights, such as men with their limbs blown off and mangled by the deadly shells, without a shudder; and instead of turning away, how we hurry to assist in alleviating their pain, bind up their wounds, and press the cool water to their parched lips, with feelings only of sympathy and pity." She also writes of her delight in becoming proficient at field-stripping, cleaning, and shooting a musket. Her final chapter is an eloquent plea for civil rights and a recognition that emancipation's promise was still a distant goal. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Pond; Personal Memoirs of Philip Henry Sheridan; Battles and Leaders of the Civil War and The Story of the Soldier and Thrilling Days of Army Life, by Gen eral George E. Forsyth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drum Taps in Dixie: Memories of a Drummer Boy, 1861-1865 A chance meeting with a comrade who was instrumental in saving from capture a piece of artillery at the second battle of Bull Run suggested one of the several sketches grouped together in this volume. Memory awakened furnished material for those that followed, each article recalling faces, forms, scenes and incidents from out of the misty past. "Awake but one, and lo! What myriads rise!" The writer has enjoyed his reminiscing. It has been a labor of love, so to speak, enabling him in a measure to live the old days over again. The articles have been written at odd times after business hours, and should not be scrutenized too closely from a literary standpoint. The writing of the memories of a drummer boy has been a source of pleasure and rest to the writer, who sincerely hopes that the reading of them may not weary those who, in their hours of rest, may scan these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southerners: A Story of the Civil War There is in my mind a picture of the days of Sixty-one - Sixty-five. I close my eyes, and out of the mists of the past there rises before me an old white house on a hill. It is springtime. A child is playing in the grass under the trees. A woman watches at the gate. And a soldier comes home from the wars. A soldier, sick, worn, weary; a haggard, broken wreck of the brave young man who left all at his country's first appeal and looked not back so long as he had strength to stand. His fighting days are over. And the woman meets him at the gate - They come down the long walk under the trees toward the little lad, the woman proudly supporting the man's faltering steps. The child, who has grown to step and speech while the man has been absent, shrinks away from the tired figure in the dusty faded Army blue, who stretches out trembling hands to him with words of affectionate appeal. The little boy does not recognize the stranger until he is caught up against that brave heart and hears the words, "My son, my son!" I close my eyes and see once more my Father, as I saw him on that day nearly forty years ago. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
