Book Synopsis Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E. Lee by : J. William Jones
Download or read book Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E. Lee written by J. William Jones and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Robert E. Lee passed on without setting pen to paper on his memoirs, both North and South alike were deprived of a classic personal history of the War Between the States worthy to sit on the shelf next to Ulysses S.Grant's Personal Memoirs. The Reverend J. William Jones, Lee's chaplain, compiled this collection of reminiscences in its place as a memorial volume commemorating his death. Filled with correspondence with President Andrew Johnson, General Grant, and C.S.A. Generals Scott, Beauregard, and Longstreet, and personal anecdotes from Lee's wartime contemporaries such as Jubal Early, Jeb Magruder, Jefferson Davis, and Winfield Scott. What comes to light is a personal portrait of Lee as family man, gentleman, scholar, and soldier, as well as an eyewitness account of the war that threatened to tear the United States asunder, as witnessed by the South's greatest military leader. The Reverend J. William Jones, D.D., was the chaplain of the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of General Robert E. Lee and after the Civil War served as chaplain for Washington College in Virginia under Lee's presidency. It was my proud privilege to have known General Lee intimately. I saw him on that day in April, 1861, on which he came to offer his stainless sword to the land that gave him birth. I followed his standard from Harper's Ferry, in 1861, to Appomattox Court-house, in 1865, coming into somewhat frequent contact with him, rejoicing with him at his long series of brilliant victories, and weeping with him when "compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources. . . . " This first attempt at authorship is sent forth with a sincere desire that it may prove acceptable to the countless admirer of the great Confederate chieftain, that it may serve to give to all a higher appreciation of his noble character, and that it may prove a blessing to the young men of the country (more especially to those who "wore the gray"), by inducing them to study, in order that they may imitate, his shining virtues.

Book excerpt: Vince Dooley and Steve Penley come together in their third collaboration (after Dooley's Playbook and Vince Dooley's Garden), this time telling the story of the University of Georgia, the place they both love most. Vince Dooley is uniquely positioned to tell the history of the University of Georgia. As head football coach and athletics director, Dooley served the university under five presidents, and he turns often to personal observations and anecdotes to inform readers. A masterful storyteller and a lifelong learner with a master's degree in history, Dooley weaves a compelling narrative of more than two centuries of history at the university. Renowned American artist Steve Penley may be best known for his paintings of historical icons, but his love for the University of Georgia pours out of every visual interpretation. With strong brush strokes and bold colors, Penley presents the university and its history as only he can.
Book Synopsis History of Mathematical Programming by : J. K. Lenstra
Download or read book History of Mathematical Programming written by J. K. Lenstra and published by Cwi. This book was released on 1991 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical span of mathematical programming, from its conception to its present flourishing state is remarkably short. The 1940's and 1950's were an exciting period when there was a great deal of research activity, but the growth of the field during the 1960's and 1970's worldwide already appears to be of historical interest too, because much of the progress during that time has had an important influence on present-day research. In this volume some pioneers of the field, as well as some prominent younger colleagues, have put their personal recollections in writing. The contributions bear witness to a time of impressive scientific progress, in which the rich new field of mathematical programming was detected and brought up.

Equally valuable is the rare insight the author provides into Haile Sellassie's life in exile during the Italian occupation, which he witnessed from close quarters, as well as the political intrigue and fighting within the imperial government.
Book Synopsis Reminiscences of Los Alamos 1943–1945 by : Lawrence Badash
Download or read book Reminiscences of Los Alamos 1943–1945 written by Lawrence Badash and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the World War II efforts to develop nuclear weapons have inspired a very large literature, it struck us as noteworthy that virtually nothing existed in the form of firsthand accounts. Now It Can Be Told, by General Leslie Groves, the Manhattan Project's military commander, is probably the most prominent exception, but the scientists themselves seem to have shown little interest in publishing their reminiscences. Believing that it would be not only worthwhile for posterity, but ex tremely interesting for the present generation to hear about the aspirations, fears, and activities of those who participated in this watershed of science and government collaboration, we arranged the public lecture series repre sented by this book.! We chose to focus upon Los Alamos since the project's efforts culminated there. The isolated laboratory in New Mexico was created to design and construct the first atomic bombs. More scientific brainpower was accumulated there than at any time since Isaac Newton dined alone, and the interactions with this community are of sociological interest, as the results of their work are of political import.

Download or read book House of Houses written by Pat Mora and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining poetic language and the traditions of magic realism to paint a vivid portrait of her family, Pat Mora’s House of Houses is an unconventional memoir that reads as if every member, death notwithstanding, is in one room talking, laughing, and crying. In a salute to the Day of the Dead, the story begins with a visit to the cemetery in which all of her deceased relatives come alive to share stories of the family, literally bringing the food to their own funerals. From there the book covers a year in the life of her clan, revealing the personalities and events that Mora herself so desperately yearns to know and understand.
