Considering the number engaged, the space on which the battle was fought, its appalling opening, and the number slain and captured, it was the bloodiest battle of the war, and from first to last, Captain Beatty, of Horry, was a gallant participant, and the men of Horry were among the bravest of the brave on that memorable day. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
