Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Letters The afflicted sister, whose writings occupy the pages of this book, is well known by name to many of those who will read it. I will here tell them how we came to publish it. In a letter to Sister Bessie, written about a year ago, she asked her to take charge of her letters and other writings, and publish them after her departure, which she then felt would be soon. In a subsequent letter she said Dear Bessie - Since I opened my mind to you about my letters I feel so relieved. Ido not want you to grant my request against your own wishes; but I do hope you will consider it, and that the dear Lord may direct you, and control your decision. I feel as though it is according to His will that I have been directed to you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thework grew insensibly on my hands, beyond the limits of an ordinary discourse, and in a form materially abridged I presented it to the Post at a public meeting held under its auspices on the evening of Decoration Day, 1891. Briggs She was always making ready to die, and kept her burial clothing in a certain drawer in her bureau, which I was afraid to look into. She lived until I was fifteen years old, and sank quietly to sleep one beautiful May after noon. I was sick at the time and alone in my room. I remember the buzzing of the flies; the humming of the bees; the flood of warm sunshine streaming over my bed; the fragrance of a bunch of arbutus brought me by a de voted young boy friend my father walking up and down 'past the door, his head bowed and his hands behind him. This was the first death in our home, and it was wonderfully quiet and peaceful. There was. No running in of neighbors, as was the fashion in those days, but all was hushed and waiting for the end. I remember, too, being very perverse and refusing to have a black ribbon put on my bonnet, because I could not endure the wear ing of mourning, and I have never worn it since. We lived in a large, rambling old house, more than a hundred years old, and full of strange dark places known as holes, which I believed were haunted; and I had a great fear of them, though sometimes my curiosity got the better of my fear, and I rummaged about among the broken furniture, spinning wheels. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Letters of Sir Robert Ball IN the year 1906 my father decided to publish his Reminis cences. With this object in view he dictated a considerable amount of material. Before, however, he had made any serious inroad upon his store of pleasant memories, other duties compelled him to postpone the compilation for several years; failing health eventually prevented the completion of the work, or even the revision of the notes which he had dictated. It was at his request that I have undertaken the duties of editor. Although it is true that I have been able to record some matters which in his modesty he might have suppressed, it is to be regretted that the whole work was not prepared by himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caleb and Mary Wilder Foote: Reminiscences and Letters There are still so many who remember my brother Henry with faithful afiection, that it has led me to give, in my mother's letters, a rather full ac count of his childhood and youth, showing the gifts and graces of mind and character which made him so beloved. It will surprise those who knew him only in his later years to find that he had to contend with an irritable temper in his early life, although it had been conquered practically by the time he was twelve years old. I have shown it freely, because it is so encouraging to see what victories can be won by persevering efiort under the guidance, and with the sympathy, of a wise and loving mother. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alfred Russel Wallace: Letters and Reminiscences It may be stated here that Wallace had suggested to the present writer that he should undertake a new work, to be called Darwin and Wallace, which was to have been a comparative study of their literary and scientific writings, with an estimate of the present position of the theory of Natural Selection as an adequate explanation of the process of organic evolution. Wal lace had promised to give as much assistance as possible in select ing the material without which the task on such a scale would Obviously have been impossible. Alas! Soon after the agree ment with the publishers was signed and in the very month that the plan of the work was to have been shown to Wallace, his hand was suddenly stilled in death; and the book remains un written. But as the names of Darwin and Wallace are in separable even by the scythe of time, a slight attempt is here: made, in the first sections of Part I. And Part II., to take note? Of their ancestry and the diversities and similarities in their re spective characters and environments - social and educational; to mark the chief characteristics of their literary works and the more salient conditions and events which led them, independ ently, to the idea of Natural Selection. If the approbation Of Old friends in whose judgment and good taste one has confidence is endorsed by acceptance on the part Of the first publisher to whom the material is submitted, and a fair Offer is made, it is ex cusable perhaps to yield to a secretly cherished wish and bring Old papers out again from their dusty retirement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Letters of Joseph and Arnold Toynbee: Edited by Gertrude Toynbee Their intellectual side has been dealt with by others, as well as being recorded in their writings. As daughter and sister I have tried to show some thing of what they were in our home, but their own letters will best reveal this, and my few words can only be of value in so far as they throw light on these. Last year I published a very short sketch of my father's life which is referred to in some of the letters in this volume. My father was one of fifteen. His own mother died when he was only just over four years old. He spoke with reverence and affection of her, and I got the impression from him that she was a beau tiful character. His father was a manly, noble and affectionate nature, greatly respected for his upright ness. He was a gentleman farmer at Heckington, in Lincolnshire. He lived to be over eighty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Gentlewoman of the Last Century: Letters of Catherine Hutton The following letters and extracts from letters have been selected from a mass of correspondence which Miss Hutton left behind her, and which, from the lapse of time, have now become historic. Her writings contain graphic accounts of places, modes of travelling, manners and customs, dress, and character. Two of the letters on the Priestley riots in 1791 I had printed a few years ago for private circulation, and afterwards allowed Mr. Dent to print them in his "Old and New Birmingham." With this exception they are all new to the public. Some readers may possibly accuse Miss Hutton of being egotistic, so I give the following quotation from a letter to one of her friends, to disarm criticism on this point: - "Much egotism in conversation is not to be tolerated, but egotism is the soul of a letter of friendship. What can be so interesting to me as my friend's account of herself?" All the persons whose names arc mentioned in the following pages are now dead, the last to pass away having been her "young friend," the late Miss Ryland, of Barford. Permission has been asked for and kindly given by Miss Hogarth for the insertion of Charles Dickens' letters, and the Rt. Hon. the Earl Lytton has allowed me to publish his father's letters. I have not to relate Mr. Carlyle's history, or describe his character. He is his own biographer, and paints his own portrait. But another difficulty arises from the extent of the resources thrown open to me. His own letters are as full of matter as the richest of his published works. His friends were not common men, and in writing to him they wrote their best. Of the many thousand letters in my possession, there is hardly one which, either on its special merits or through its connec tion with something which concerned him, does not deserve to be printed. Selection is indispensable; a middle way must be struck between too much and too little. I have been guided largely, however, by Carlyle's personal directions to me, and such a way will, I trust, be discovered.
