Book excerpt: In 1947, the American Bar Association (ABA) asked the American Law Institute (ALI) to undertake the first national program of post-admission legal education. The need to refresh returning WWII lawyer-veterans on the law, underscored the necessity to offer continuing education to all lawyers. ALI accepted the challenge, and the two organizations formed the American Law Institute-American Bar Association (ALI-ABA). The mission of this new, national continuing legal education (CLE) venture was to educate the bar in general, to work with state and local bar groups to meet lawyers' CLE needs, and to assist in establishing organizations that would develop their own CLE programs. In his role as both the Governor of New Jersey and as Chairman of the Coalition of Northeastern Governors, Governor Kane explains how pollution is not the price of progress. This speech mentions many state environmental clean-up efforts such as, the Solid Waste Privatization Act, his proposal for a New Jersey mandatory recycling act, the Environmental Responsibility Cleanup Act and the Hazardous Waste Sifting Commission. J. Clarence Davies of the Conservation Foundation is also mentioned in regard to exposure to toxic substances in the workplace and the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Another subject brought to the attention of the audience was a survey entitled "Crossing the Hudson: a survey of New York manufacturers who have moved to New Jersey." To invet in tomorrow meant to invest in technology and Governor Kean addresses strategies for making both states more attractive to high technology firms. He lists these regional factors as those that give New York and New Jersey an advantage in attracting technology firms: 1) a well-educated workforce, 2) a stimulating cultural environment, 3) well-maintained infrastructure, 4) safe environment and an affluent market of potential customers.
