Book excerpt: The capacity to respond and recover from disasters by any local, state, or national government may be linked to several factors, including economic and human resources. Sometimes, the ability of a government to respond to a disaster is insufficient due to limited availability of resources, and as such, external assistance from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and private organizations must be considered. This research investigated how religious organizations in Jos, Nigeria participate in disaster response and recovery operations. Preliminary analysis indicated that religion is a key factor worthy of consideration in the development of disaster management plans and policies, because religious organizations play an active role in disaster management in their communities. The methodology of this research is a qualitative approach that utilized open-ended interviews to extract information. Purposive sampling technique was used to draw the population of the interviewees, which included 19 Christian and Muslim religious leaders in Jos. The data was analyzed using an inductive analysis and the results indicated that religious organizations in Jos, Nigeria are actively involved in disaster response and recovery operations by providing relief efforts and spiritual support to disaster victims, as well as help the community to stabilize. The research revealed the strategies and processes employed by religious organizations in disaster response and recovery operations.
