Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious History Twenty-seven years ago I published, under the title of Studies of Religious History, ' a series of essays relating to the various creeds of antiquity, of the Middle Ages and of the East. The following are essays which may be considered as a sequel to those Which were favourably received in 1857. In the present work, I but incidentally dwell upon Greek and Latin antiquity; to compensate for Which I submit a lengthy work upon Buddhism, and some minute discussions relative to medi&val questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian History in Its Three Great Periods Hese volumes, of which the first was originally published under the title Fragments of Chris tian History, were prepared in the regular course of duty in the department of Ecclesiastical History in Harvard University. Taken together, the two em brace the entire development of Catholic Christianity, coming down to the eve of the Reformation. Their plan requires for its completion a third volume, te viewing certain modern phases of religious life and thought, which is now in preparation. The series thus contains a general view, or outline, of the course of study indicated in the Introduction, which I have attempted to fill out in the University lecture-courses. Taken in connection with Hebrew Men and Times, which serves as preface, and Our Liberal Movement in Theology, which serves as sequel, it gives a simi lar outline of the great religious tradition that has come down to our own time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Religion, Vol. 3 Is there, then, a dark chamber here, too, which we are afraid to examine - into which we dare not suffer the light of day to enter? So Colenso asked of the orthodox critics who, when he exposed the human and fallible authorship of the Old Testament, expressed alarm lest he should carry his method into the region of Christianity. In the present instalment of the History I have penetrated the dark chamber, and at least left the door ajar by which that influential person, the General Reader, may enter. He who has neither leisure, desire, nor opportunity to search the books catalogued at the close of the volume may secure a bird's-eye view of the main results of modern criticism of early Christianity and its literature. As in the previous volume on Judaism, so now, I have attempted to show the religious process in conjunction with the course of political events and with the march of secular literature. For religion forms part of sociology, and the story of the Church connects itself intimately with the life of the world at large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Religious History Semitic religions according to the formula in which I have had some part, ought to exhibit the religions of antiquity under an aspect somewhat different from that which the Symbolic school and the purely Hellenic school show by their works. The unity of the indo-european race, in opposition to the Semitic race, acknowledged in their reli gion, as in their language, will serve hereafter as a basis for the history of the religions Of antiquity. This does not touch the doctrine of the article in question, but it merely explains the silence I'have preserved with regard to recent discoveries which constitute an epoch in science. If I have not tried to fill up this omission, it is because the discoveries of which I speak have not yet been suffi ciently matured for presentation to the public as definite results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prolegomena of the History of Religions I do not doubt that all real students of the History of Religion have by this time read M. Beville's book in the original. But the interest in the Science of Religion is spreading rapidly and widely, and there are large classes of English readers who seldom see a book which is published abroad, and who are more easily reached by an English translation. I hope, therefore, that M. Beville's book in its English trans lation will be read even more widely in England than it has been and I trust that it may help to remedy the injury which has of late been done to the Science of Religion in this country, both by its indiscriminate enemies and by its indiscriminate admirers. Observe that we pos tulate mere curiosity and interest in human nature, as a phenomenon, we postulate no sym pathy or interest in religious belief as such. For the Martian as described is a being for whom religion is an impossibility and the Christian ideal a subject for laughter. He would natur ally pass by our churches, ignore our religious books and newspapers, and regard the denuncia tion of the advancing tide of infidelity by Bishops and Archdeacons, as a proof that the terrestrials are only still at the lowest rung of the ladder, scaled already by the inhabitants of Mars. Yet none the less such a being could not be long upon earth, before he would be driven to the conclusion that if he desired to understand the civilization of Europe and America, to enter into the meaning of its poli tics, its literature, its art, and even to appreciate its political geography, there was one subject of which he must strive to make himself a master - the history of Christianity, of the manifold forms which it has assumed, of the strange spell cast by it upon the most practical of the races upon earth, and the still stranger reactions which it has exercised upon politics and culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Christianity An attempt to write the history of Christianity in the space of an average novel is so obviously open to objections that, instead of trying to parry them, I shall merely state what seems to me the possible compensation of brevity in such a matter. It is or may be conducive to total comprehension, to coherence of judgment, and in a measure even to the understanding of details. A distinguished expert in historical and philological research has avowed that specialists sometimes get their most illuminating ideas from a haphazard glance into a popular and condensed presentment of their own subject. Without hoping so to help the experts, I humbly conceive that the present conspectus of Christian history may do an occasional service even to an opponent by bringing out a clear issue. Writers of a different way of thinking have done as much for me. The primary difficulty is of course the problem of origins. In my treatment of this problem, going as I do beyond the concessions of the most advanced professional scholars, I cannot expect much acquiescence for the present. The unexpected delay in its publication is owing chiefly to the pressure of other and more imperative engagements. One reason for it, however, is the fact that, although the subject is one which I had long studied and on which I had given instruction to many successive classes, more time was required for the compo sition of the book than I had anticipated. This is partly for the reason that it appeared to me, for the present purpose, expedient to abandon for the most part the method which I had always fol lowed in my Lectures of arranging the matter under the heads of General and Special Doctrinal History. On this topic something more is said in the introductory chapter. This change Of plan has involved an entire recasting of the materials to be incorpo rated into this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian History in Its Three Great Periods: Third Period Modern Phases I am not aware that any attempt has yet been made, for the religious student, to reconcile these opposing aspects in a single View. At all events, this Which might well appear the most important field in Christian history has not ordinarily been even surveyed in our courses of theological instruo tion. It would be too much to claim for the follow ing chapters that they aim to supply the want thus indicated. They are, however, an essay designed to show, in some detail, how that want should be met. Of the topics presented, five include the purely ecclesiastical or dogmatic phases of the Reformation Period, - that is, from 1500 to 1650; five trace the several lines followed since, in the direction of free thought and modern scholarship; While an in termediate chapter describes the bridge connecting the earlier and later, across a gulf that might seem impassable, - the passage from dogma to pure rea son. This mode of treatment may serve at least to hint what should (in my View) be the method pursued, to bring the more valuable lessons of our history Within hail of contemporary'thought. I believe that the times are ripe for such an essay, and that in this, as in all other domains, secular reason must exercise its rights.
