A Dangerous Awakening chronicles the religious clashes in Nigeria, and shows how religion has been used in the struggle for political power. Dr. Enwerem bases his study on interviews and unpublished memos, papers and letters not otherwise accessible to the public. This book is an invaluable contribution to the study of contemporary politics and religion in Nigeria Of the few Nigerians qualified to write on this important topic, Dr. Enwerem is the best... Reflective, thorough and mature, he has written a brilliant account of the most dynamic organization of Nigerian Christianity during the 20th century. The book teaches, challenges and provokes - qualities that define an outstanding work that will stand the test of time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion, History, and Politics in Nigeria is concerned with the problematic nature of religion and politics in Nigerian history. The book provides a lively and straightforward treatment of the relationship among religion, politics, and history in Nigeria, and how it affects public life today. By adopting various cultural, historical, political, and sociological perspectives, the text's contributors provide an excellent introduction to the volatile mix of religion and politics in Nigerian history, as well as a range of strategic choices open to religious adherents. The complexity of the relationship among religion, history, and politics is organized around four themes: indigenous values and the influence of Islam and Christianity, colonialism and religious transformation, the religious landscape of the post-colonial period, and the rise of evangelism and fundamentalism. The volume provides an insightful guide to contemporary history, contemporary religion, and contemporary politics, enabling the reader to reach informed and balanced judgments about the role in religion in Nigerian history and politics. This opens the door for serious examination and debate, and will be excellent for use by the general reader and in political science, history, and religion courses.

Book excerpt: Religion and Global Politics: Soft Power in Nigeria and Beyond examines the deployment of religious soft power in African states and the potential it has for transforming perceptions of the continent. The contributors refocus the attention on religion away from the ‘misery’ discourse of conflict and violence towards the domain of international relations, diplomacy and foreign policy in Africa. Through this shift, the contributors analyze the ways in which religion has impacted the external relations of African states. Religion and Global Politics introduces the theme of religion to the discourse of African international relations and politics to provide a thorough examination of religion’s influence on politics in the daily lives of African people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work is about the political impact of Islam in modern Nigeria. It argues that Islam is both a religious and political force in modern Nigeria and that there is a tiny Islamic elite who aims to impose a theocracy on the country. The book traces the origin of the creation of an Islamic identity and how, since the 1950s, this identity has been further strengthened and manipulated to control federal power. So successful is the use of Islam for power that the Christians have been instigated to fight back, thus unleashing a never ending religious rivalry. For its insights on the emergence of identity, the relationship between Islam and political power, and the relevance of Islam in Nigeria, there is no other book that can compare with this one. The authors are famous and are widely regarded as among the best analysts on religion in Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigerians are troubled about the capability of political institutions in Nigeria to curb religious threats, thus maintaining security with minimum damage in preventing the occurrence of religious eruptions. The study examines the debate on institutionalizing the Islamic Law referred to as Sharia at the Federal level. The book ascertains the impact of religion (and ethnicity) on the Nigerian political institutions especially the Executive arm of the Government. The study examines the 1977 and 1988 Sharia debates at the Constituent Assemblies. Specific issues were addressed in the book, such as the Organization of Islamic Conference, Federal Government appointments, religious pilgrimages, the use of Arabic on Nigerian currencies, public holidays, work-free Friday, and the religious leaders, which affected the peaceful coexistence among Nigerians since the 1977 Sharia debate at the Constituent Assembly. The findings revealed that Nigerians were discontented with their political leaders over the use of religion in the public places. In addition to that, some Nigerian religious leaders infiltrated intra- and interreligious conflicts in Nigeria. However, the prospect of Nigeria as a nation lies with the leadership and followership. The study concludes that people's mentality determines the type of leaders they want, which is responsible for Nigeria's self-inflicted problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secular humanism has taken the world by storm – including the realm of African politics. Believing that religion is irrelevant, humanism asserts that men and women need no divine help in knowing what is right or wrong, valid or invalid, good or bad, as they are mature moral agents in their own rights. Integrity in Nigerian Politics challenges this assertion, providing an introduction to Christian political ethics and offering a powerful argument for its relevance in the complex moral terrain of today’s political affairs. Rooted specifically in Nigeria’s political history, and the social, religious, and economic challenges it has faced, this study explores the role of integrity in practical politics and the implications of its neglect. Establishing that it is the character of God that is the foundation for successful governance, Dr Aghawenu demonstrates that it is ineffective, impractical, and ultimately dangerous to ignore the ethical insights Christianity has to offer the political realm. This important work challenges the church to overcome the sacred-secular divide that so often permeates its public engagement and to recognize that it has what it needs to transform the nature of democratic politics in Nigeria, in Africa, and throughout the world.
