Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of Phillis Wheatley Our purpose in republishing this little book of poems, a century and a quarter after the death of the author, is to acquaint the present generation more thoroughly with her remarkable genius. She was born in Africa, and at the age of eight years was brought to America and sold into slavery to a Mrs. John Wheatley in Boston. Within a year of her arrival she could read and write English, of which she was previously in entire ignorance. She also acquired a knowledge of the classics, and developed a pleasing poetic style. Before she was twenty her writings had attracted the attention of many literary people of England, and in 1773 a volume of her poems was published in London. Since then there have been many editions published; one in 1784 in Boston, another in Albany, 1793; another in 1802, another in 1805, another 1816. Memoirs and Poems of Phillis Wheatley in 1834, 1835 and 1838. Her poems constituted the second volume of Abbie Joseph La Valle's book, "The Negro Equalled by few Europeans," in 1801. Besides these, many separate poems have been published, perhaps the earliest being in memory of George Whiteneld, printed in 1770. Many of her poems were not published. She wrote a poem to George Washington, which the general highly complimented, but which he was too modest to publish. Phillis Wheatley was married to a Mr. Peters, in Boston, but died soon after in 1784, at about the age of thirty-one years. Her. poems were written and published before her marriage, and she was known as Phillis Wheatley rather than Phillis W. Peters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems, on Moral and Religious Subjects Were it not that a preface is considered by many persons as an indispensable accompaniment to a book, the authoress of this volume would prefer laying it before the world without one. But to omit complying with the general custom in this respect might seem to indicate indifference to public opinion, or the ridiculous ascription of extraordinary merit to What will be found simple in its style, and owing its chief importance to its moral and religious inculcations. Conscious of having been in uenced by the best motives, when determining on publication; and equally Well aware how defective her book must appear to those whose reading has been restricted to works of acknowledged excellence, and whose taste has been formed by the finest models; the authoress conceives that apology is, in the first instance, unnecessary - and would be, perhaps, in the second, unavailing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems, on Various Subjects, Religious, Moral, Sentimental and Humorous The Editors of Public Journals have been pleased to express their spontaneous sentiments in favor of some of the poems in the following work. From a multiplicity of complimentary remarks, and public notices, the subsequent ones are extracted. "In the following, as well from the initials W. R. as from the elegant flow of genius, we recognize the pen of the distinguished American poet, William Ray. Esq." Palladium of Liberty. "The Sacred Melodies of Byron and Moore, have been much admired, and many of them very justly: but we do not recollect one of them, and we have read them all, which we think superior to the following, which is avowedly from the pen of William Ray." Plough-Boy. "The following beautiful lines are from the pen of William Ray, Esq. of Onondaga. whose poetical effusions have often delighted the public, and whose genius and taste ought to have secured to him the smiles, instead of the sternest frowns, of Fortune." New -York Statesman. "The following poem is from the pen of William Ray, that favorite of genius and son of misfortune." Albany Register. "Mr. Ray, as a poet, possesses genius of no ordinary cast. Many of his effusions, humorous, moral and sentimental, we have read with great pleasure, and we have no doubt he will make an interesting volume. New-York Spectator. His imaginations are only evil continually-laying structures of wretchedness and wo; and hewing out vessels that can hold no water. Such is his digres sion from the requirements of God, that he is a stran ger to virtue, and lies buried in the open field of his pollution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems Divine and Moral: Many of Them Now First Published As youth is the season best fitted for ia struction, and every Christian must admit that religious knowledge is the most import ant of all; and as verse is more easily learnt, and longer retained than prose; I have made the rising generation my principal objects. And, being convinced by long experience, that such instruction cannot begin too soon, and that short hymns and psalms are suited to the minds and memories of children, even in infancy, I have placed such in the first pages of my book, and would earnestly recommend to those of my readers who have the charge of children in their tender years, to teach them to repeat a few stanzas of these, even before they can speak plain. I know it may be done with pleasure to them, as well as to their instructors, and it will implant in their minds pious ideas and use ful maxims, which will be retained, and prove highly beneficial throughout their fu ture lives. Through the rosy portals of morning Now the tides of sunshine flow, O'er the blossoming earth and the glistening sea The praise Thou inspirest rolls back to Thee; Its tones through the infinite arches go; Yet, crippled and dumb, behold me wait. Dear Lord, at the Beautiful Gate. I wait for Thy hand of healing - For vigor and hope in Thee. Open wide the door - let me feel the sun - Let me touch Thy robe - I shall rise and run Through Thy happy universe, safe and free, Where in and out Thy beloved go, Nor want nor wandering know. Thyself art the Door, Most Holy! By Thee let me enter in. I press toward Thee with my failing strength; Unfold Thy love in its breadth and length! True life from Thine let my spirit win! To the saint's fair city, the Father's throne, Thou, Lord, art the way alone. To be made with Thee one spirit, Is the boon that I lingering ask, To have no bar 'twixt my soul and Thine; My thoughts to echo Thy will divine; Myself Thy servant for any task. Life! life! I may enter through Thee, the Door - Saved, sheltered forevermore! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Great Religious Poetry The most obvious facts about this collection of poetry are that it is not all great and that it makes strange combinations and sequences. It ranges from the Psalms of David and the Hymn of Cleanthes to the latest free verse. The great hymns that are translated from the Latin and the most radical of the twentieth century verse are alike only in that they show human feeling about the concept that is the foundation of all religion. Many poems that are far from being great belong here because they are significant. There are some persons who say that our age has no religion; others say it is more sincerely religious than any of the great ages of faith that are gone. 1the most intelligent thought of the present bases the authority of religion, not upon revelation, but upon the nature of man. Man's hunger for God is as funda mental and legitimate as his hunger for food and love. Our age may be lost as to what it should believe, but we were never so sure that we must and do believe. The good swimmer knows best how to trust the water; the best life is most reliant upon what some call the Integrity of the Universe and one of the greatest poets called the Everlasting Arms. The great poets have always spoken with authority. In them has the Word been made flesh. Now a war-weary world in search of faith turns to them. The Bible is an anthology of Hebrew literature-the Great Anthology. If no future poets ever rise to so great a height of constructive imagination as those of the classic Hebrew period it will always remain the Bible of the race. A cursory view of other religious poetry shows little that is not based upon the biblical poetry, but the spiritual assets of mankind have never been gathered together that we may see what they are. This book is a step in that direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
