Book excerpt: Although the relationship between religiosity-spirituality and risky alcohol use is one of the most frequently studied topics in mental health, relatively little is known about how these variables relate to each other over time, especially during specific developmental periods such as the transition from high school to college. This study analyzed three waves of self-report data collected from a sample (N=623) of college students over a two-year period. Analyses examined (1) the stability of religiosity-spirituality and risky drinking over the transition to college, (2) the magnitude and direction of relationships between religiosity-spirituality and risky drinking, (3) the degree to which third variables account for relationships between religiosity-spirituality and risky drinking, and (4) the degree to which observed relationships between religiosity-spirituality and risky drinking extend to multiple, alternative measures of these constructs. Religiosity-spirituality and risky drinking demonstrated a high degree of stability over the transition to college. Consistent with previous literature, religiosity-spirituality predicted risky drinking, but risky drinking did not predict religiosity-spirituality. Relationships between religiosity-spirituality and risky drinking were observed across multiple alternative measures of the constructs and remained significant even after controlling for race and conduct disorder symptoms. In conclusion, religiosity-spirituality is a stable and important correlate and predictor of risky drinking, as well as a potential target for prevention and intervention during the transition to college.

There are a number of factors that may place students at a high risk for developing alcohol dependency. Similarly, protective factors have been identified as a means to keep drinking levels in the low-risk range. In a sample of 581 students from Abilene Christian University, researchers sought to better understand the association between depression, spirituality, religiosity, and alcohol use in college students at a faith based university. Results indicated that students who were most at risk for high levels of drinking were those who identified as the male gender, those who lived on campus, and those who were involved in a social club on campus. Additionally, results indicated that spirituality serves as a moderator between the depression and alcohol use. Meaning, when spirituality is minimal, then the effect that depression has on drinking is also minimal. However, when spirituality levels are high, then depression has a larger effect on drinking patterns. These results indicated that drinking in college students is a valid concern and that mental health and spirituality may affect students’ drinking patterns. Knowing this association, it is important that college campuses utilize both alcohol use prevention planning as well as intervention programs.

People in this age group have the highest rates of engagement in many risky health behaviors, such as binge drinking, substance use, and engaging in unprotected sexual activity. The American College Health Association (ACHA) has been actively involved in the study of college health behavior and the initiation of information and services to college health care providers for the past decade. However, little research has been done in this area on sub-populations of the overall college population. This study aims to assess the sub-population of students who attend a faith-based institution. This population is of particular interest due to the significant impact that, both internal and external, religiosity/spirituality have on health behaviors. Data were requested from institutions that have utilized the National College Health Assessment (NCHA-II) and also have identified themselves as Protestant or Other Christian. The data was aggregated and randomly sampled for comparison to a random matched sample from the national reference group. Comparative analyses found significant group differences in the levels of engagement in alcohol use, binge drinking, and number of sexual partners.

Some scholars argue, with literature to support it, that problem drinking in college is just a media-driven myth (Lederman et al. 2004). Yet it is clear that college students do drink, some to excess. Various reasons are cited from alcohol availability to the ?freedom? associated with this stage of life. However, very few researchers have attempted to determine whether religiosity affects alcohol use among college students. The purpose of this study was to further examine the combined issues of religiosity and alcohol use among college students. Is excessive use of alcohol during this time of life simply an adult transition issue, as Jackson et al. (2005) contend, or is there more to it? Research seems to point to the fact that religiosity plays a role. The primary hypothesis tested was that students who valued religious activities as part of their college experience would use alcohol less, including binge drinking, than those who did not. The second hypothesis tested was that students who valued parties and Greek life would use alcohol and binge more than students who did not. The data set used was constructed by the Harvard School of Public Health and included data from 120 four-year colleges and universities from throughout the United States. The analysis supported the hypothesis that religiosity was a factor in reduced alcohol use by college students. College students who valued religious activities drank less than those who did not. The study also supported the hypothesis that students who valued parties and Greek life drank more. The heaviest drinkers were those who valued parties. These results are highly significant given the size of the sample. No other study that looked at religiosity and alcohol use among college students used a sample this large. These results help us to better understand the negative association between religiosity and alcohol use among college students as well as the positive association between parties and alcohol use. They especially help us to formulate strategies that might be considered to alleviate problem drinking during this stage of life.
