Book Synopsis Christianity, Politics and the Afterlives of War in Uganda by : Henni Alava
Download or read book Christianity, Politics and the Afterlives of War in Uganda written by Henni Alava and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book sheds light on the complex relationships of Christianity, politics, peace and war in Africa and beyond. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Uganda's largest religious communities, it provides a critical assessment of the Catholic and Anglican Churches' societal role following the war between the Lord's Resistance Army and the Government of Uganda (1986-2006). The book shows that Christian narratives of peace are entwined in the social, political and material realities within which the churches that profess them are embedded. This embeddedness both enables churches' peace work and sets it insurmountable limits. While churches aim to nurture peace, they themselves are cut up by societal divisions, and entrenched in structures of historical violence in ways that make their cries for peace liable to provoke conflict. At the heart of the book is the Acholi concept of anyobanyoba, 'confusion', which depicts an experienced sense of both ambivalence and uncertainty; a state of mixed-up affairs within community; and an essential aspect of politics in a country characterised by the threat of state violence. Building on this local concept, the book also advocates 'confusion' as an epistemological and ethical device."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda: A Modern History (1981) provides a comprehensive political, social and economic history of Uganda from the beginnings of colonial rule in 1888. It focuses particularly on the development of the Ugandan economy and demonstrates how the economy became structurally dependent on world capitalism during the colonial period and how this has affected its subsequent development. The book also deals with the political and social tendencies which shaped Ugandan society in both the colonial and postcolonial period. The first four chapters examine the initial colonial occupation and the colonial state’s role in the rural nexus of chiefs, peasants and migrant workers. They also look at the colonial state and the context of the wider national, regional and international economy and analyse the African nationalist response and the formation of political parties to take control of the postcolonial state. The second part of the book considers the political alliances and economic strategies of the Obote regime and the events of Amin’s military regime. The epilogue looks at events since the fall of the Amin regime and suggests ways in which Uganda may be able to tackle its underlying economic problems.

Book Synopsis The Church in the World by : David Zac Niringiye
Download or read book The Church in the World written by David Zac Niringiye and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, studies of the church in Africa have tended to focus on church history or church-state relations, but in this publication David Zac Niringiye presents a study of the Church of Uganda focused on its ecclesiology. Niringiye examines several formative periods for the Church of Uganda during concurrent chronological political eras characterized by varying degrees of socio-political turbulence, highlighting how the social context impacted the church’s self-expression. The author’s methodology and insight sets this work apart as an excellent reflection on the Ugandan church and brings scholarly attention to previously ignored topics that hold great value to society, the church, and the academic community globally.
